A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
poured out my Spirit upon . . . Israel--the sure forerunner of their conversion (Joe 2:28; Zac 12:10). The pouring out of His Spirit is a pledge that He will hide His face no more (Co2 1:22; Eph 1:14; Phi 1:6).

The arrangements as to the land and the temple are, in many particulars, different from those subsisting before the captivity. There are things in it so improbable physically as to preclude a purely literal interpretation. The general truth seems to hold good that, as Israel served the nations for his rejection of Messiah, so shall they serve him in the person of Messiah, when he shall acknowledge Messiah (Isa 60:12; Zac 14:17-19; compare Psa 72:11). The ideal temple exhibits, under Old Testament forms (used as being those then familiar to the men whom Ezekiel, a priest himself, and one who delighted in sacrificial images, addresses), not the precise literal outline, but the essential character of the worship of Messiah as it shall be when He shall exercise sway in Jerusalem among His own people, the Jews, and thence to the ends of the earth. The very fact that the whole is a vision (Eze 40:2), not an oral face-to-face communication such as that granted to Moses (Num 12:6-8), implies that the directions are not to be understood so precisely literally as those given to the Jewish lawgiver. The description involves things which, taken literally, almost involve natural impossibilities. The square of the temple, in Eze 42:20, is six times as large as the circuit of the wall enclosing the old temple, and larger than all the earthly Jerusalem. Ezekiel gives three and a half miles and one hundred forty yards to his temple square. The boundaries of the ancient city were about two and a half miles. Again, the city in Ezekiel has an area between three or four thousand square miles, including the holy ground set apart for the prince, priests, and Levites. This is nearly as large as the whole of Judea west of the Jordan. As Zion lay in the center of the ideal city, the one-half of the sacred portion extended to nearly thirty miles south of Jerusalem, that is, covered nearly the whole southern territory, which reached only to the Dead Sea (Eze 47:19), and yet five tribes were to have their inheritance on that side of Jerusalem, beyond the sacred portion (Eze 48:23-28). Where was land to be found for them there? A breadth of but four or five miles apiece would be left. As the boundaries of the land are given the same as under Moses, these incongruities cannot be explained away by supposing physical changes about to be effected in the land such as will meet the difficulties of the purely literal interpretation. The distribution of the land is in equal portions among the twelve tribes, without respect to their relative numbers, and the parallel sections running from east to west. There is a difficulty also in the supposed separate existence of the twelve tribes, such separate tribeships no longer existing, and it being hard to imagine how they could be restored as distinct tribes, mingled as they now are. So the stream that issued from the east threshold of the temple and flowed into the Dead Sea, in the rapidity of its increase and the quality of its waters, is unlike anything ever known in Judea or elsewhere in the world. Lastly, the catholicity of the Christian dispensation, and the spirituality of its worship, seem incompatible with a return to the local narrowness and "beggarly elements" of the Jewish ritual and carnal ordinances, disannulled "because of the unprofitableness thereof" [FAIRBAIRN], (Gal 4:3, Gal 4:9; Gal 5:1; Heb 9:10; Heb 10:18). "A temple with sacrifices now would be a denial of the all-sufficiency of the sacrifice of Christ. He who sacrificed before confessed the Messiah. He who should sacrifice now would solemnly deny Him" [DOUGLAS]. These difficulties, however, may be all seeming, not real. Faith accepts God's Word as it is, waits for the event, sure that it will clear up all such difficulties. Perhaps, as some think, the beau ideal of a sacred commonwealth is given according to the then existing pattern of temple services, which would be the imagery most familiar to the prophet and his hearers at the time. The minute particularizing of details is in accordance with Ezekiel's style, even in describing purely ideal scenes. The old temple embodied in visible forms and rites spiritual truths affecting the people even when absent from it. So this ideal temple is made in the absence of the outward temple to serve by description the same purpose of symbolical instruction as the old literal temple did by forms and acts. As in the beginning God promised to be a "sanctuary" (Eze 11:16) to the captives at the Chebar, so now at the close is promised a complete restoration and realization of the theocratic worship and polity under Messiah in its noblest ideal (compare Jer 31:38-40). In Rev 21:22 "no temple" is seen, as in the perfection of the new dispensation the accidents of place and form are no longer needed to realize to Christians what Ezekiel imparts to Jewish minds by the imagery familiar to them. In Ezekiel's temple holiness stretches over the entire temple, so that in this there is no longer a distinction between the different parts, as in the old temple: parts left undeterminate in the latter obtain now a divine sanction, so that all arbitrariness is excluded. So that it is be a perfect manifestation of the love of God to His covenant-people (Eze. 40:1-43:12); and from it, as from a new center of religious life, there gushes forth the fulness of blessings to them, and so to all people (Eze. 47:1-23) [FAIRBAIRN and HAVERNICK]. The temple built at the return from Babylon can only very partially have realized the model here given. The law is seemingly opposed to the gospel (Mat 5:21-22, Mat 5:27-28, Mat 5:33-34). It is not really so (compare Mat 5:17-18; Rom 3:31; Gal 3:21-22). It is true Christ's sacrifice superseded the law sacrifices (Heb 10:12-18). Israel's province may hereafter be to show the essential identity, even in the minute details of the temple sacrifices, between the law and gospel (Rom 10:8). The ideal of the theocratic temple will then first be realized.

8 But [235] what [5101] saith it [3004]? The word [4487] is [2076] nigh [1451] thee [4675], even in [1722] thy [4675] mouth [4750], and [2532] in [1722] thy [4675] heart [2588]: that is [5123], the word [4487] of faith [4102], which [3739] we preach [2784];
12 But [1161] this man [846], after he had offered [4374] one [3391] sacrifice [2378] for [5228] sins [266] for [1519] ever [1336], sat down [2523] on [1722] the right hand [1188] of God [2316];
13 From henceforth [3063] expecting [1551] till [2193] his [846] enemies [2190] be made [5087] his [846] footstool [5286] [4228].
14 For [1063] by one [3391] offering [4376] he hath perfected [5048] for [1519] ever [1336] them that are sanctified [37].
15 Whereof [1161] the Holy [40] Ghost [4151] also [2532] is a witness [3140] to us [2254]: for [1063] after [3326] that he had said before [4280],
16 This [3778] is the covenant [1242] that [3739] I will make [1303] with [4314] them [846] after [3326] those [1565] days [2250], saith [3004] the Lord [2962], I will put [1325] my [3450] laws [3551] into [1909] their [846] hearts [2588], and [2532] in [1909] their [846] minds [1271] will I write [1924] them [846];
17 And [2532] their [846] sins [266] and [2532] iniquities [458] [846] will I remember [3415] no [3364] more [2089].
18 Now [1161] where [3699] remission [859] of these [5130] is, there is no more [3765] offering [4376] for [4012] sin [266].
21 Is the law [3551] then [3767] against [2596] the promises [1860] of God [2316]? God forbid [3361] [1096]: for [1063] if [1487] there had been [1325] a law [3551] given [1325] which [3588] could [1410] have given life [2227], verily [3689] righteousness [1343] should [302] have been [2258] by [1537] the law [3551].
22 But [235] the scripture [1124] hath concluded [4788] all [3956] under [5259] sin [266], that [2443] the promise [1860] by [1537] faith [4102] of Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] might be given [1325] to them that believe [4100].
31 Do we [2673] then [3767] make void [2673] the law [3551] through [1223] faith [4102]? God forbid [3361] [1096]: yea [235], we establish [2476] the law [3551].
17 Think [3543] not [3361] that [3754] I am come [2064] to destroy [2647] the law [3551], or [2228] the prophets [4396]: I am [2064] not [3756] come [2064] to destroy [2647], but [235] to fulfil [4137].
18 For [1063] verily [281] I say [3004] unto you [5213], Till [2193] [302] heaven [3772] and [2532] earth [1093] pass [3928], one [1520] jot [2503] or [2228] one [3391] tittle [2762] shall in no wise [3364] pass [3928] from [575] the law [3551], till [2193] [302] all [3956] be fulfilled [1096].
33 Again [3825], ye have heard [191] that [3754] it hath been said [4483] by them of old time [744], Thou shalt [1964] not [3756] forswear thyself [1964], but [1161] shalt perform [591] unto the Lord [2962] thine [4675] oaths [3727]:
34 But [1161] I [1473] say [3004] unto you [5213], Swear [3660] not [3361] at all [3654]; neither [3383] by [1722] heaven [3772]; for [3754] it is [2076] God's [2316] throne [2362]:
27 Ye have heard [191] that [3754] it was said [4483] by them of old time [744], Thou shalt [3431] not [3756] commit adultery [3431]:
28 But [1161] I [1473] say [3004] unto you [5213], That [3754] whosoever [3956] looketh [991] on a woman [1135] to [4314] lust after [1937] her [846] hath committed adultery [3431] with her [846] already [2235] in [1722] his [846] heart [2588].
21 Ye have heard [191] that [3754] it was said [4483] by them of old time [744], Thou shalt [5407] not [3756] kill [5407]; and [1161] whosoever [3739] [302] shall kill [5407] shall be [2071] in danger [1777] of the judgment [2920]:
22 But [1161] I [1473] say [3004] unto you [5213], That [3754] whosoever [3956] is angry [3710] with his [846] brother [80] without a cause [1500] shall be [2071] in danger [1777] of the judgment [2920]: and [1161] whosoever [3739] [302] shall say [2036] to his [846] brother [80], Raca [4469], shall be [2071] in danger [1777] of the council [4892]: but [1161] whosoever [3739] [302] shall say [2036], Thou fool [3474], shall be [2071] in danger [1777] of [1519] hell [1067] fire [4442].
22 And [2532] I saw [1492] no [3756] temple [3485] therein [1722] [846]: for [1063] the Lord [2962] God [2316] Almighty [3841] and [2532] the Lamb [721] are [2076] the temple [3485] of it [846].
38 Behold, the days [03117] come [0935], saith [05002] the LORD [03068], that the city [05892] shall be built [01129] to the LORD [03068] from the tower [04026] of Hananeel [02606] unto the gate [08179] of the corner [06438].
39 And the measuring [04060] line [06957] [06961] shall yet go forth [03318] over against it upon the hill [01389] Gareb [01619], and shall compass about [05437] to Goath [01601].
40 And the whole valley [06010] of the dead bodies [06297], and of the ashes [01880], and all the fields [07709] [08309] unto the brook [05158] of Kidron [06939], unto the corner [06438] of the horse [05483] gate [08179] toward the east [04217], shall be holy [06944] unto the LORD [03068]; it shall not be plucked up [05428], nor thrown down [02040] any more for ever [05769].
16 Therefore say [0559], Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Although I have cast them far off [07368] among the heathen [01471], and although I have scattered [06327] them among the countries [0776], yet will I be to them as a little [04592] sanctuary [04720] in the countries [0776] where they shall come [0935].
18 Now [1161] where [3699] remission [859] of these [5130] is, there is no more [3765] offering [4376] for [4012] sin [266].
10 Which stood only [3440] in [1909] meats [1033] and [2532] drinks [4188], and [2532] divers [1313] washings [909], and [2532] carnal [4561] ordinances [1345], imposed [1945] on them until [3360] the time [2540] of reformation [1357].
1 Stand fast [4739] therefore [3767] in the liberty [1657] wherewith [3739] Christ [5547] hath made [1659] us [2248] free [1659], and [2532] be [1758] not [3361] entangled [1758] again [3825] with the yoke [2218] of bondage [1397].
9 But [1161] now [3568], after that ye have known [1097] God [2316], or [1161] rather [3123] are known [1097] of [5259] God [2316], how [4459] turn ye [1994] again [3825] to [1909] the weak [772] and [2532] beggarly [4434] elements [4747], whereunto [3739] ye desire [2309] again [3825] [509] to be in bondage [1398]?
3 Even [2532] so [3779] we [2249], when [3753] we were [2258] children [3516], were [2258] in bondage [1402] under [5259] the elements [4747] of the world [2889]:
23 As for the rest [03499] of the tribes [07626], from the east [06921] side [06285] unto the west [03220] side [06285], Benjamin [01144] shall have a [0259] portion.
24 And by the border [01366] of Benjamin [01144], from the east [06921] side [06285] unto the west [03220] side [06285], Simeon [08095] shall have a [0259] portion.
25 And by the border [01366] of Simeon [08095], from the east [06921] side [06285] unto the west [03220] side [06285], Issachar [03485] a [0259] portion.
26 And by the border [01366] of Issachar [03485], from the east [06921] side [06285] unto the west [03220] side [06285], Zebulun [02074] a [0259] portion.
27 And by the border [01366] of Zebulun [02074], from the east [06921] side [06285] unto the west [03220] side [06285], Gad [01410] a [0259] portion.
28 And by the border [01366] of Gad [01410], at the south [05045] side [06285] southward [08486], the border [01366] shall be even from Tamar [08559] unto the waters [04325] of strife [04808] [04809] in Kadesh [06946], and to the river [05158] toward the great [01419] sea [03220].
19 And the south [05045] side [06285] southward [08486], from Tamar [08559] even to the waters [04325] of strife [04808] [04809] in Kadesh [06946], the river [05158] to the great [01419] sea [03220]. And this is the south [08486] side [06285] southward [05045].
20 He measured [04058] it by the four [0702] sides [07307]: it had a wall [02346] round about [05439], five [02568] hundred [03967] reeds long [0753], and five [02568] hundred [03967] broad [07341], to make a separation [0914] between the sanctuary [06944] and the profane place [02455].
6 And he said [0559], Hear [08085] now my words [01697]: If there be a prophet [05030] among you, I the LORD [03068] will make myself known [03045] unto him in a vision [04759], and will speak [01696] unto him in a dream [02472].
7 My servant [05650] Moses [04872] is not so, who is faithful [0539] in all mine house [01004].
8 With him will I speak [01696] mouth [06310] to mouth [06310], even apparently [04758], and not in dark speeches [02420]; and the similitude [08544] of the LORD [03068] shall he behold [05027]: wherefore then were ye not afraid [03372] to speak [01696] against my servant [05650] Moses [04872]?
2 In the visions [04759] of God [0430] brought [0935] he me into the land [0776] of Israel [03478], and set [05117] me upon a very [03966] high [01364] mountain [02022], by which was as the frame [04011] of a city [05892] on the south [05045].
11 Yea, all kings [04428] shall fall down [07812] before him: all nations [01471] shall serve [05647] him.
17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up [05927] of all the families [04940] of the earth [0776] unto Jerusalem [03389] to worship [07812] the King [04428], the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], even upon them shall be no rain [01653].
18 And if the family [04940] of Egypt [04714] go not up [05927], and come [0935] not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague [04046], wherewith the LORD [03068] will smite [05062] the heathen [01471] that come not up [05927] to keep [02287] the feast [02282] of tabernacles [05521].
19 This shall be the punishment [02403] of Egypt [04714], and the punishment [02403] of all nations [01471] that come not up [05927] to keep [02287] the feast [02282] of tabernacles [05521].
12 For the nation [01471] and kingdom [04467] that will not serve [05647] thee shall perish [06]; yea, those nations [01471] shall be utterly [02717] wasted [02717].
6 Being confident [3982] of this [5124] very thing [846], that [3754] he which hath begun [1728] a good [18] work [2041] in [1722] you [5213] will perform [2005] it until [891] the day [2250] of Jesus [2424] Christ [5547]:
14 Which [3739] is [2076] the earnest [728] of our [2257] inheritance [2817] until [1519] the redemption [629] of the purchased possession [4047], unto [1519] the praise [1868] of his [846] glory [1391].
22 Who [3588] hath [4972] also [2532] sealed [4972] us [2248], and [2532] given [1325] the earnest [728] of the Spirit [4151] in [1722] our [2257] hearts [2588].
10 And I will pour [08210] upon the house [01004] of David [01732], and upon the inhabitants [03427] of Jerusalem [03389], the spirit [07307] of grace [02580] and of supplications [08469]: and they shall look [05027] upon me whom they have pierced [01856], and they shall mourn [04553] for him, as one mourneth [05594] for his only [03173] son, and shall be in bitterness [04843] for him, as one that is in bitterness [04843] for his firstborn [01060].
28 And it shall come to pass afterward [0310], that I will pour out [08210] my spirit [07307] upon all flesh [01320]; and your sons [01121] and your daughters [01323] shall prophesy [05012], your old men [02205] shall dream [02492] dreams [02472], your young men [0970] shall see [07200] visions [02384]:
25 Then will I sprinkle [02236] clean [02889] water [04325] upon you, and ye shall be clean [02891]: from all your filthiness [02932], and from all your idols [01544], will I cleanse [02891] you.
26 A new [02319] heart [03820] also will I give [05414] you, and a new [02319] spirit [07307] will I put [05414] within [07130] you: and I will take away [05493] the stony [068] heart [03820] out of your flesh [01320], and I will give [05414] you an heart [03820] of flesh [01320].
27 And I will put [05414] my spirit [07307] within [07130] you, and cause [06213] you to walk [03212] in my statutes [02706], and ye shall keep [08104] my judgments [04941], and do [06213] them.
28 And ye shall dwell [03427] in the land [0776] that I gave [05414] to your fathers [01]; and ye shall be my people [05971], and I will be your God [0430].
29 I will also save [03467] you from all your uncleannesses [02932]: and I will call [07121] for the corn [01715], and will increase [07235] it, and lay [05414] no famine [07458] upon you.
