cast into . . . fire-- (Joh 15:6).

both the ends--the north kingdom having been already overturned by Assyria under Tiglath-pileser; the south being pressed on by Egypt (Kg2 23:29-35).

midst of it is burned--rather, "is on flame"; namely, Jerusalem, which had now caught the flame by the attack of Nebuchadnezzar.

Is it meet for any work--"it," that is, the scorched part still remaining.

29 In his days [03117] Pharaohnechoh [06549] king [04428] of Egypt [04714] went up [05927] against the king [04428] of Assyria [0804] to the river [05104] Euphrates [06578]: and king [04428] Josiah [02977] went [03212] against [07125] him; and he slew [04191] him at Megiddo [04023], when he had seen [07200] him.
30 And his servants [05650] carried him in a chariot [07392] dead [04191] from Megiddo [04023], and brought [0935] him to Jerusalem [03389], and buried [06912] him in his own sepulchre [06900]. And the people [05971] of the land [0776] took [03947] Jehoahaz [03059] the son [01121] of Josiah [02977], and anointed [04886] him, and made him king [04427] in his father's [01] stead.
31 Jehoahaz [03059] was twenty [06242] and three [07969] years [08141] old [01121] when he began to reign [04427]; and he reigned [04427] three [07969] months [02320] in Jerusalem [03389]. And his mother's [0517] name [08034] was Hamutal [02537], the daughter [01323] of Jeremiah [03414] of Libnah [03841].
32 And he did [06213] that which was evil [07451] in the sight [05869] of the LORD [03068], according to all that his fathers [01] had done [06213].
33 And Pharaohnechoh [06549] put him in bands [0631] at Riblah [07247] in the land [0776] of Hamath [02574], that he might not reign [04427] in Jerusalem [03389]; and put [05414] the land [0776] to a tribute [06066] of an hundred [03967] talents [03603] of silver [03701], and a talent [03603] of gold [02091].
34 And Pharaohnechoh [06549] made Eliakim [0471] the son [01121] of Josiah [02977] king [04427] in the room of Josiah [02977] his father [01], and turned [05437] his name [08034] to Jehoiakim [03079], and took [03947] Jehoahaz [03059] away [03947]: and he came [0935] to Egypt [04714], and died [04191] there.
35 And Jehoiakim [03079] gave [05414] the silver [03701] and the gold [02091] to Pharaoh [06547]; but he taxed [06186] the land [0776] to give [05414] the money [03701] according to the commandment [06310] of Pharaoh [06547]: he exacted [05065] the silver [03701] and the gold [02091] of the people [05971] of the land [0776], of every one [0376] according to his taxation [06187], to give [05414] it unto Pharaohnechoh [06549].
6 If [3362] a man [5100] abide [3306] not [3362] in [1722] me [1698], he is cast [906] forth [1854] as [5613] a branch [2814], and [2532] is withered [3583]; and [2532] men gather [4863] them [846], and [2532] cast [906] them into [1519] the fire [4442], and [2532] they are burned [2545].
