A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
Noah, Daniel . . . Job--specified in particular as having been saved from overwhelming calamities for their personal righteousness. Noah had the members of his family alone given to him, amidst the general wreck. Daniel saved from the fury of the king of Babylon the three youths (Dan 2:17-18, Dan 2:48-49). Though his prophecies mostly were later than those of Ezekiel, his fame for piety and wisdom was already established, and the events recorded in Dan. 1:1-2:49 had transpired. The Jews would naturally, in their fallen condition, pride themselves on one who reflected such glory on his nation at the heathen capital, and would build vain hopes (here set aside) on his influence in averting ruin from them. Thus the objection to the authenticity of Daniel from this passage vanishes. "Job" forms the climax (and is therefore put out of chronological order), having not even been left a son or a daughter, and having had himself to pass through an ordeal of suffering before his final deliverance, and therefore forming the most simple instance of the righteousness of God, which would save the righteous themselves alone in the nation, and that after an ordeal of suffering, but not spare even a son or daughter for their sake (Eze 14:16, Eze 14:18, Eze 14:20; compare Jer 7:16; Jer 11:14; Jer 14:11).

deliver . . . souls by . . . righteousness-- (Pro 11:4); not the righteousness of works, but that of grace, a truth less clearly understood under the law (Rom 4:3).

3 For [1063] what [5101] saith [3004] the scripture [1124]? [1161] Abraham [11] believed [4100] God [2316], and [2532] it was counted [3049] unto him [846] for [1519] righteousness [1343].
4 Riches [01952] profit [03276] not in the day [03117] of wrath [05678]: but righteousness [06666] delivereth [05337] from death [04194].
11 Then said [0559] the LORD [03068] unto me, Pray [06419] not for this people [05971] for their good [02896].
14 Therefore pray [06419] not thou for this people [05971], neither lift up [05375] a cry [07440] or prayer [08605] for them: for I will not hear [08085] them in the time [06256] that they cry [07121] unto me for their trouble [07451].
16 Therefore pray [06419] not thou for this people [05971], neither lift up [05375] cry [07440] nor prayer [08605] for them [01157], neither make intercession [06293] to me: for I will not hear [08085] thee.
20 Though Noah [05146], Daniel [01840], and Job [0347], were in it [08432], as I live [02416], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], they shall deliver [05337] neither son [01121] nor [0518] daughter [01323]; they shall but deliver [05337] their own souls [05315] by their righteousness [06666].
18 Though these three [07969] men [0582] were in it [08432], as I live [02416], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], they shall deliver [05337] neither sons [01121] nor daughters [01323], but they only shall be delivered [05337] themselves.
16 Though these three [07969] men [0582] were in it [08432], as I live [02416], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], they shall deliver [05337] neither sons [01121] nor daughters [01323]; they only shall be delivered [05337], but the land [0776] shall be desolate [08077].
48 Then [0116] the king [04430] made [07236] Daniel [01841] a great man [07236], and gave [03052] him many [07690] great [07260] gifts [04978], and made him ruler [07981] over [05922] the whole [03606] province [04083] of Babylon [0895], and chief [07229] of the governors [05460] over [05922] all [03606] the wise [02445] men of Babylon [0895].
49 Then Daniel [01841] requested [01156] of [04481] the king [04430], and he set [04483] Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665], over [05922] the affairs [05673] of the province [04083] of Babylon [0895]: but Daniel [01841] sat in the gate [08651] of the king [04430].
17 Then [0116] Daniel [01841] went [0236] to his house [01005], and made the thing [04406] known [03046] to Hananiah [02608], Mishael [04333], and Azariah [05839], his companions [02269]:
18 That they would desire [01156] mercies [07359] of [04481] [06925] the God [0426] of heaven [08065] concerning [05922] this [01836] secret [07328]; that Daniel [01841] and his fellows [02269] should not [03809] perish [07] with [05974] the rest [07606] of the wise [02445] men of Babylon [0895].
1 Then said [0559] the LORD [03068] unto me, Though Moses [04872] and Samuel [08050] stood [05975] before [06440] me, yet my mind [05315] could not be toward this people [05971]: cast them out [07971] of my sight [06440], and let them go forth [03318].
8 Jehoiachin [03078] was eighteen [08083] [06240] years [08141] old [01121] when he began to reign [04427], and he reigned [04427] in Jerusalem [03389] three [07969] months [02320]. And his mother's [0517] name [08034] was Nehushta [05179], the daughter [01323] of Elnathan [0494] of Jerusalem [03389].
6 So Jehoiakim [03079] slept [07901] with his fathers [01]: and Jehoiachin [03078] his son [01121] reigned [04427] in his stead.
1 And it came to pass in the sixth [08345] year [08141], in the sixth [08345] month, in the fifth [02568] day of the month [02320], as I sat [03427] in mine house [01004], and the elders [02205] of Judah [03063] sat [03427] before [06440] me, that the hand [03027] of the Lord [0136] GOD [03069] fell [05307] there upon me.
36 Jehoiakim [03079] was twenty [06242] and five [02568] years [08141] old [01121] when he began to reign [04427]; and he reigned [04427] eleven [0259] [06240] years [08141] in Jerusalem [03389]. And his mother's [0517] name [08034] was Zebudah [02080], the daughter [01323] of Pedaiah [06305] of Rumah [07316].
1 In the third [07969] year [08141] of the reign [04438] of Jehoiakim [03079] king [04428] of Judah [03063] came [0935] Nebuchadnezzar [05019] king [04428] of Babylon [0894] unto Jerusalem [03389], and besieged [06696] it.
