slew . . . sons . . . before his eyes--previous to his eyes being "put out" (Jer 39:7); literally, "dug out." The Assyrian sculptures depict the delight with which the kings struck out, often with their own hands, the eyes of captive princes. This passage reconciles Jer 32:4, "his eyes shall behold his eyes"; with Eze 12:13, "he shall not see Babylon, though he shall die there."
slew all . . . nobles-- (Jer 27:20). |
20 Which Nebuchadnezzar [05019] king [04428] of Babylon [0894] took [03947] not, when he carried away captive [01540] Jeconiah [03204] the son [01121] of Jehoiakim [03079] king [04428] of Judah [03063] from Jerusalem [03389] to Babylon [0894], and all the nobles [02715] of Judah [03063] and Jerusalem [03389];
13 My net [07568] also will I spread [06566] upon him, and he shall be taken [08610] in my snare [04686]: and I will bring [0935] him to Babylon [0894] to the land [0776] of the Chaldeans [03778]; yet shall he not see [07200] it, though he shall die [04191] there.
4 And Zedekiah [06667] king [04428] of Judah [03063] shall not escape [04422] out of the hand [03027] of the Chaldeans [03778], but shall surely [05414] be delivered [05414] into the hand [03027] of the king [04428] of Babylon [0894], and shall speak [01696] with him mouth [06310] to mouth [06310], and his eyes [05869] shall behold [07200] his eyes [05869];
7 Moreover he put out [05786] Zedekiah's [06667] eyes [05869], and bound [0631] him with chains [05178], to carry [0935] him to Babylon [0894].
