A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
I--the Hebrew should be pointed as the second person feminine, a form common in Jeremiah: "Thou hast broken," &c. So the Septuagint, and the sense requires it.

thy yoke . . . bands--the yoke and bands which I laid on thee, My laws (Jer 5:5).

transgress--so the Keri, and many manuscripts read. But the Septuagint and most authorities read, "I will not serve," that is, obey. The sense of English Version is, "I broke thy yoke (in Egypt)," &c., "and (at that time) thou saidst, I will not transgress; whereas thou hast (since then) wandered (from Me)" (Exo 19:8).

hill . . . green tree--the scene of idolatries (Deu 12:2; Isa 57:5, Isa 57:7).

wanderest--rather, "thou hast bowed down thyself" (for the act of adultery: figurative of shameless idolatry, Exo 34:15-16; compare Job 31:10).

10 Then let my wife [0802] grind [02912] unto another [0312], and let others [0312] bow down [03766] upon her.
15 Lest thou make [03772] a covenant [01285] with the inhabitants [03427] of the land [0776], and they go a whoring [02181] after [0310] their gods [0430], and do sacrifice [02076] unto their gods [0430], and one call [07121] thee, and thou eat [0398] of his sacrifice [02077];
16 And thou take [03947] of their daughters [01323] unto thy sons [01121], and their daughters [01323] go a whoring [02181] after [0310] their gods [0430], and make [02181] thy sons [01121] go a whoring [02181] after [0310] their gods [0430].
7 Upon a lofty [01364] and high [05375] mountain [02022] hast thou set [07760] thy bed [04904]: even thither wentest thou up [05927] to offer [02076] sacrifice [02077].
5 Enflaming [02552] yourselves with idols [0410] under every green [07488] tree [06086], slaying [07819] the children [03206] in the valleys [05158] under the clifts [05585] of the rocks [05553]?
2 Ye shall utterly [06] destroy [06] all the places [04725], wherein the nations [01471] which [0834] ye shall possess [03423] served [05647] their gods [0430], upon the high [07311] mountains [02022], and upon the hills [01389], and under every green [07488] tree [06086]:
8 And all the people [05971] answered [06030] together [03162], and said [0559], All that the LORD [03068] hath spoken [01696] we will do [06213]. And Moses [04872] returned [07725] the words [01697] of the people [05971] unto the LORD [03068].
5 I will get [03212] me unto the great men [01419], and will speak [01696] unto them; for they have known [03045] the way [01870] of the LORD [03068], and the judgment [04941] of their God [0430]: but these have altogether [03162] broken [07665] the yoke [05923], and burst [05423] the bonds [04147].
10 Thou art wearied [03021] in the greatness [07230] of thy way [01870]; yet saidst [0559] thou not, There is no hope [02976]: thou hast found [04672] the life [02416] of thine hand [03027]; therefore thou wast not grieved [02470].
12 And they said [0559], There is no hope [02976]: but we will walk [03212] after [0310] our own devices [04284], and we will every one [0376] do [06213] the imagination [08307] of his evil [07451] heart [03820].
26 And they took [03947] the bullock [06499] which was given [05414] them, and they dressed [06213] it, and called [07121] on the name [08034] of Baal [01168] from morning [01242] even until noon [06672], saying [0559], O Baal [01168], hear [06030] us. But there was no [0369] voice [06963], nor any that answered [06030]. And they leaped [06452] upon the altar [04196] which was made [06213].
25 Withhold [04513] thy foot [07272] from being unshod [03182], and thy throat [01627] from thirst [06773]: but thou saidst [0559], There is no hope [02976]: no; for I have loved [0157] strangers [02114], and after [0310] them will I go [03212].
15 And I will give [05414] her her vineyards [03754] from thence, and the valley [06010] of Achor [05911] for a door [06607] of hope [08615]: and she shall sing [06030] there, as in the days [03117] of her youth [05271], and as in the day [03117] when she came up [05927] out of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
7 And she shall follow [07291] after her lovers [0157], but she shall not overtake [05381] them; and she shall seek [01245] them, but shall not find [04672] them: then shall she say [0559], I will go [03212] and return [07725] to my first [07223] husband [0376]; for then was it better [02896] with me than now [06258].
2 Lift up [05375] thine eyes [05869] unto the high places [08205], and see [07200] where [0375] thou hast not been lien [07693] [07901] with. In the ways [01870] hast thou sat [03427] for them, as the Arabian [06163] in the wilderness [04057]; and thou hast polluted [02610] the land [0776] with thy whoredoms [02184] and with thy wickedness [07451].
24 A wild ass [06501] used [03928] to the wilderness [04057], that snuffeth up [07602] the wind [07307] at her pleasure [0185] [05315]; in her occasion [08385] who can turn her away [07725]? all they that seek [01245] her will not weary [03286] themselves; in her month [02320] they shall find [04672] her.
25 Withhold [04513] thy foot [07272] from being unshod [03182], and thy throat [01627] from thirst [06773]: but thou saidst [0559], There is no hope [02976]: no; for I have loved [0157] strangers [02114], and after [0310] them will I go [03212].
5 Who hath sent out [07971] the wild ass [06501] free [02670]? or who hath loosed [06605] the bands [04147] of the wild ass [06171]?
5 Behold, as wild asses [06501] in the desert [04057], go they forth [03318] to their work [06467]; rising betimes [07836] for a prey [02964]: the wilderness [06160] yieldeth food [03899] for them and for their children [05288].
12 And he will be a wild [06501] man [0120]; his hand [03027] will be against every man, and every man's hand [03027] against him; and he shall dwell [07931] in the presence [06440] of all his brethren [0251].
14 And thou shalt not go aside [05493] from any of the words [01697] which I command [06680] thee this day [03117], to the right hand [03225], or to the left [08040], to go [03212] after [0310] other [0312] gods [0430] to serve [05647] them.
31 And they have built [01129] the high places [01116] of Tophet [08612], which is in the valley [01516] of the son [01121] of Hinnom [02011], to burn [08313] their sons [01121] and their daughters [01323] in the fire [0784]; which I commanded [06680] them not, neither came [05927] it into my heart [03820].
18 And Jehu [03058] gathered [06908] all the people [05971] together [06908], and said [0559] unto them, Ahab [0256] served [05647] Baal [01168] a little [04592]; but Jehu [03058] shall serve [05647] him much [07235].
16 And I will utter [01696] my judgments [04941] against them touching [05921] all their wickedness [07451], who have forsaken [05800] me, and have burned incense [06999] unto other [0312] gods [0430], and worshipped [07812] the works [04639] of their own hands [03027].
20 For of old time [05769] I have broken [07665] thy yoke [05923], and burst [05423] thy bands [04147]; and thou saidst [0559], I will not transgress [05674] [05647]; when upon every high [01364] hill [01389] and under every green [07488] tree [06086] thou wanderest [06808], playing the harlot [02181].
23 How canst thou say [0559], I am not polluted [02930], I have not gone [01980] after [0310] Baalim [01168]? see [07200] thy way [01870] in the valley [01516], know [03045] what thou hast done [06213]: thou art a swift [07031] dromedary [01072] traversing [08308] her ways [01870];
9 Hide [05641] thy face [06440] from my sins [02399], and blot out [04229] all mine iniquities [05771].
4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned [02398], and done [06213] this evil [07451] in thy sight [05869]: that thou mightest be justified [06663] when thou speakest [01696], and be clear [02135] when thou judgest [08199].
18 Come now [03212], and let us reason together [03198], saith [0559] the LORD [03068]: though your sins [02399] be as scarlet [08144], they shall be as white [03835] as snow [07950]; though they be red [0119] like crimson [08438], they shall be as wool [06785].
22 For though thou wash [03526] thee with nitre [05427], and take thee much [07235] soap [01287], yet thine iniquity [05771] is marked [03799] before [06440] me, saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069].
32 For their vine [01612] is of the vine [01612] of Sodom [05467], and of the fields [07709] of Gomorrah [06017]: their grapes [06025] are grapes [06025] of gall [07219], their clusters [0811] are bitter [04846]:
10 For pass over [05674] the isles [0339] of Chittim [03794], and see [07200]; and send [07971] unto Kedar [06938], and consider [0995] diligently [03966], and see [07200] if there be such a thing.
30 And he took [03947] their king's [04428] crown [05850] from off his head [07218], the weight [04948] whereof was a talent [03603] of gold [02091] with the precious [03368] stones [068]: and it was set on David's [01732] head [07218]. And he brought forth [03318] the spoil [07998] of the city [05892] in great [03966] abundance [07235].
4 Take [03947] the girdle [0232] that thou hast got [07069], which is upon thy loins [04975], and arise [06965], go [03212] to Euphrates [06578], and hide [02934] it there in a hole [05357] of the rock [05553].
8 Which turned [02015] the rock [06697] into a standing [098] water [04325], the flint [02496] into a fountain [04599] of waters [04325].
25 Then the priest [03548] shall look [07200] upon it: and, behold, if the hair [08181] in the bright spot [0934] be turned [02015] white [03836], and it be in sight [04758] deeper [06013] than the skin [05785]; it is a leprosy [06883] broken [06524] out of the burning [04348]: wherefore the priest [03548] shall pronounce him unclean [02930]: it is the plague [05061] of leprosy [06883].
19 For I know [03045] him, that [0834] he will command [06680] his children [01121] and his household [01004] after him [0310], and they shall keep [08104] the way [01870] of the LORD [03068], to do [06213] justice [06666] and judgment [04941]; that the LORD [03068] may bring [0935] upon Abraham [085] that which he hath spoken [01696] of him.
5 He took [03947] also of the seed [02233] of the land [0776], and planted [05414] it in a fruitful [02233] field [07704]; he placed [03947] it by great [07227] waters [04325], and set [07760] it as a willow tree [06851].
1 Israel [03478] is an empty [01238] vine [01612], he bringeth forth [07737] fruit [06529] unto himself: according to the multitude [07230] of his fruit [06529] he hath increased [07235] the altars [04196]; according to the goodness [02896] of his land [0776] they have made goodly [02895] images [04676].
9 Thou preparedst [06437] room before [06440] it, and didst cause it to take deep [08328] root [08327], and it filled [04390] the land [0776].
2 And he fenced [05823] it, and gathered out the stones [05619] thereof, and planted [05193] it with the choicest vine [08321], and built [01129] a tower [04026] in the midst [08432] of it, and also made [02672] a winepress [03342] therein: and he looked [06960] that it should bring forth [06213] grapes [06025], and it brought forth [06213] wild grapes [0891].
21 Yet I had planted [05193] thee a noble vine [08321], wholly a right [0571] seed [02233]: how then art thou turned [02015] into the degenerate plant [05494] of a strange [05237] vine [01612] unto me?
2 Ye shall utterly [06] destroy [06] all the places [04725], wherein the nations [01471] which [0834] ye shall possess [03423] served [05647] their gods [0430], upon the high [07311] mountains [02022], and upon the hills [01389], and under every green [07488] tree [06086]:
13 Then shall ye know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068], when their slain [02491] men shall be among [08432] their idols [01544] round about [05439] their altars [04196], upon every high [07311] hill [01389], in all the tops [07218] of the mountains [02022], and under every green [07488] tree [06086], and under every thick [05687] oak [0424], the place [04725] where they did offer [05414] sweet [05207] savour [07381] to all their idols [01544].
13 They sacrifice [02076] upon the tops [07218] of the mountains [02022], and burn incense [06999] upon the hills [01389], under oaks [0437] and poplars [03839] and elms [0424], because the shadow [06738] thereof is good [02896]: therefore your daughters [01323] shall commit whoredom [02181], and your spouses [03618] shall commit adultery [05003].
21 What wilt thou say [0559] when he shall punish [06485] thee? for thou hast taught [03925] them to be captains [0441], and as chief [07218] over thee: shall not sorrows [02256] take [0270] thee, as a woman [0802] in travail [03205]?
19 My bowels [04578], my bowels [04578]! I am pained [02342] [03176] at my very [07023] heart [03820]; my heart [03820] maketh a noise [01993] in me; I cannot hold my peace [02790], because thou hast heard [08085], O my soul [05315], the sound [06963] of the trumpet [07782], the alarm [08643] of war [04421].
4 Wilt thou not from this time cry [07121] unto me, My father [01], thou art the guide [0441] of my youth [05271]?
33 Why trimmest [03190] thou thy way [01870] to seek [01245] love [0160]? therefore hast thou also taught [03925] the wicked ones [07451] thy ways [01870].
3 Let us break [05423] their bands [04147] asunder [05423], and cast away [07993] their cords [05688] from us.
4 I drew [04900] them with cords [02256] of a man [0120], with bands [05688] of love [0160]: and I was to them as they that take off [07311] the yoke [05923] on their jaws [03895], and I laid [05186] meat [0398] unto them.
16 For Israel [03478] slideth back [05637] as a backsliding [05637] heifer [06510]: now the LORD [03068] will feed [07462] them as a lamb [03532] in a large place [04800].
18 I have surely [08085] heard [08085] Ephraim [0669] bemoaning [05110] himself thus; Thou hast chastised [03256] me, and I was chastised [03256], as a bullock [05695] unaccustomed [03808] [03925] to the yoke: turn [07725] thou me, and I shall be turned [07725]; for thou art the LORD [03068] my God [0430].
25 Withhold [04513] thy foot [07272] from being unshod [03182], and thy throat [01627] from thirst [06773]: but thou saidst [0559], There is no hope [02976]: no; for I have loved [0157] strangers [02114], and after [0310] them will I go [03212].
23 How canst thou say [0559], I am not polluted [02930], I have not gone [01980] after [0310] Baalim [01168]? see [07200] thy way [01870] in the valley [01516], know [03045] what thou hast done [06213]: thou art a swift [07031] dromedary [01072] traversing [08308] her ways [01870];
22 For though thou wash [03526] thee with nitre [05427], and take thee much [07235] soap [01287], yet thine iniquity [05771] is marked [03799] before [06440] me, saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069].
21 Yet I had planted [05193] thee a noble vine [08321], wholly a right [0571] seed [02233]: how then art thou turned [02015] into the degenerate plant [05494] of a strange [05237] vine [01612] unto me?
20 For of old time [05769] I have broken [07665] thy yoke [05923], and burst [05423] thy bands [04147]; and thou saidst [0559], I will not transgress [05674] [05647]; when upon every high [01364] hill [01389] and under every green [07488] tree [06086] thou wanderest [06808], playing the harlot [02181].
1 They say [0559], If a man [0376] put away [07971] his wife [0802], and she go [01980] from him, and become another [0312] man's [0376], shall he return unto her again [07725]? shall not that land [0776] be greatly [02610] polluted [02610]? but thou hast played the harlot [02181] with many [07227] lovers [07453]; yet return again [07725] to me, saith [05002] the LORD [03068].
