Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
glory--Jehovah, the glory of Israel (Psa 106:20; Rom 1:23). The Shekinah, or cloud resting on the sanctuary, was the symbol of "the glory of the Lord" (Kg1 8:11; compare Rom 9:4). The golden calf was intended as an image of the true God (compare Exo 32:4-5), yet it is called an "idol" (Act 7:41). It (like Roman Catholic images) was a violation of the second commandment, as the heathen multiplying of gods is a violation of the first.
not profit-- (Jer 2:8). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
A nation - A Gentile nation, in strong antithesis to people, the appellation of Israel.
Their glory - Though the worship of the one true God is a nation's greatest glory, yet it is irksome because it puts a constraint on human passions.
That which doth not profit - Israel had exchanged the prosperity which was God's reward of obedience for the calamities which resulted from idol-worship. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Their glory - The true God, who was their glory; and who always did them good, giving them cause to glory in him. |
8 The priests [03548] said [0559] not, Where is the LORD [03068]? and they that handle [08610] the law [08451] knew [03045] me not: the pastors [07462] also transgressed [06586] against me, and the prophets [05030] prophesied [05012] by Baal [01168], and walked [01980] after [0310] things that do not profit [03276].
41 And [2532] they made a calf [3447] in [1722] those [1565] days [2250], and [2532] offered [321] sacrifice [2378] unto the idol [1497], and [2532] rejoiced [2165] in [1722] the works [2041] of their own [846] hands [5495].
4 And he received [03947] them at their hand [03027], and fashioned [06696] it with a graving tool [02747], after he had made [06213] it a molten [04541] calf [05695]: and they said [0559], These be thy gods [0430], O Israel [03478], which brought [05927] thee up out of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
5 And when Aaron [0175] saw [07200] it, he built [01129] an altar [04196] before [06440] it; and Aaron [0175] made proclamation [07121], and said [0559], To morrow [04279] is a feast [02282] to the LORD [03068].
4 Who [3748] are [1526] Israelites [2475]; to whom [3739] pertaineth the adoption [5206], and [2532] the glory [1391], and [2532] the covenants [1242], and [2532] the giving of the law [3548], and [2532] the service [2999] of God, and [2532] the promises [1860];
11 So that the priests [03548] could [03201] not stand [05975] to minister [08334] because [06440] of the cloud [06051]: for the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] had filled [04390] the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
23 And [2532] changed [236] the glory [1391] of the uncorruptible [862] God [2316] into [1722] an image [1504] made like [3667] to corruptible [5349] man [444], and [2532] to birds [4071], and [2532] fourfooted beasts [5074], and [2532] creeping things [2062].
20 Thus they changed [04171] their glory [03519] into the similitude [08403] of an ox [07794] that eateth [0398] grass [06212].
