(Psa 1:3).
shall not see--that is, feel. Answering to Jer 17:6; whereas the unbelievers "shall not see (even) when good cometh," the believer "shall not see (so as to be overwhelmed by it even) when heat (fiery trial) cometh." Trials shall come upon him as on all, nay, upon him especially (Heb 12:6); but he shall not sink under them, because the Lord is his secret strength, just as the "roots spread out by a river" (or, "water-course") draw hidden support from it (Co2 4:8-11).
careful--anxious, as one desponding (Luk 12:29; Pe1 5:7).
drought--literally, "withholding," namely, of rain (Jer 14:1); he here probably alludes to the drought which had prevailed, but makes it the type of all kinds of distress. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
A s a tree planted by the waters - Which is sufficiently supplied with moisture, though the heat be intense, and there be no rain; for the roots being spread out by the river, they absorb from it all the moisture requisite for the flourishing vegetation of the tree.
Shall not see when heat cometh - Shall not feel any damage by drought, for the reason already assigned. It shall be strong and vigorous, its leaf always green; and shall produce plenty of fruit in its season. |

7 Casting [1977] all [3956] your [5216] care [3308] upon [1909] him [846]; for [3754] he [846] careth [3199] for [4012] you [5216].
29 And [2532] seek [2212] not [3361] ye [5210] what [5101] ye shall eat [5315], or [2228] what [5101] ye shall drink [4095], [2532] neither [3361] be ye of doubtful mind [3349].
8 We are troubled [2346] on [1722] every side [3956], yet [235] not [3756] distressed [4729]; we are perplexed [639], but [235] not [3756] in despair [1820];
9 Persecuted [1377], but [235] not [3756] forsaken [1459]; cast down [2598], but [235] not [3756] destroyed [622];
10 Always [3842] bearing about [4064] in [1722] the body [4983] the dying [3500] of the Lord [2962] Jesus [2424], that [2443] the life [2222] also [2532] of Jesus [2424] might be made manifest [5319] in [1722] our [2257] body [4983].
11 For we [2249] which [3588] live [2198] are [3860] alway [104] [1063] delivered [3860] unto [1519] death [2288] for [1223] Jesus [2424]' sake [1223], that [2443] the life [2222] also [2532] of Jesus [2424] might be made manifest [5319] in [1722] our [2257] mortal [2349] flesh [4561].

6 For he shall be like the heath [06199] in the desert [06160], and shall not see [07200] when good [02896] cometh [0935]; but shall inhabit [07931] the parched places [02788] in the wilderness [04057], in a salt [04420] land [0776] and not inhabited [03427].
3 And he shall be like a tree [06086] planted [08362] by the rivers [06388] of water [04325], that bringeth forth [05414] his fruit [06529] in his season [06256]; his leaf [05929] also shall not wither [05034]; and whatsoever he doeth [06213] shall prosper [06743].
