first . . . double--HORSLEY translates, "I will recompense . . . once and again"; literally, "the first time repeated": alluding to the two captivities--the Babylonian and the Roman. MAURER, "I will recompense their former iniquities (those long ago committed by their fathers) and their (own) repeated sins" (Jer 16:11-12). English Version gives a good sense, "First (before 'I bring them again into their land'), I will doubly (that is, fully and amply, Jer 17:18; Isa 40:2) recompense."

carcasses--not sweet-smelling sacrifices acceptable to God, but "carcasses" offered to idols, an offensive odor to God: human victims (Jer 19:5; Eze 16:20), and unclean animals (Isa 65:4; Isa 66:17). MAURER explains it, "the carcasses" of the idols: their images void of sense and life, Compare Jer 16:19-20. Lev 26:30 favors this.

30 And I will destroy [08045] your high places [01116], and cut down [03772] your images [02553], and cast [05414] your carcases [06297] upon the carcases [06297] of your idols [01544], and my soul [05315] shall abhor [01602] you.
19 O LORD [03068], my strength [05797], and my fortress [04581], and my refuge [04498] in the day [03117] of affliction [06869], the Gentiles [01471] shall come [0935] unto thee from the ends [0657] of the earth [0776], and shall say [0559], Surely our fathers [01] have inherited [05157] lies [08267], vanity [01892], and things wherein there is no profit [03276].
20 Shall a man [0120] make [06213] gods [0430] unto himself, and they are no gods [0430]?
17 They that sanctify [06942] themselves, and purify [02891] themselves in the gardens [01593] behind [0310] one [0259] tree in the midst [08432], eating [0398] swine's [02386] flesh [01320], and the abomination [08263], and the mouse [05909], shall be consumed [05486] together [03162], saith [05002] the LORD [03068].
4 Which remain [03427] among the graves [06913], and lodge [03885] in the monuments [05341], which eat [0398] swine's [02386] flesh [01320], and broth [04839] [06564] of abominable [06292] things is in their vessels [03627];
20 Moreover thou hast taken [03947] thy sons [01121] and thy daughters [01323], whom thou hast borne [03205] unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed [02076] unto them to be devoured [0398]. Is this of thy whoredoms [08457] a small matter [04592],
5 They have built [01129] also the high places [01116] of Baal [01168], to burn [08313] their sons [01121] with fire [0784] for burnt offerings [05930] unto Baal [01168], which I commanded [06680] not, nor spake [01696] it, neither came [05927] it into my mind [03820]:
2 Speak [01696] ye comfortably [03820] to Jerusalem [03389], and cry [07121] unto her, that her warfare [06635] is accomplished [04390], that her iniquity [05771] is pardoned [07521]: for she hath received [03947] of the LORD'S [03068] hand [03027] double [03718] for all her sins [02403].
18 Let them be confounded [0954] that persecute [07291] me, but let not me be confounded [0954]: let them be dismayed [02865], but let not me be dismayed [02865]: bring [0935] upon them the day [03117] of evil [07451], and destroy [07665] them with double [04932] destruction [07670].
11 Then shalt thou say [0559] unto them, Because your fathers [01] have forsaken [05800] me, saith [05002] the LORD [03068], and have walked [03212] after [0310] other [0312] gods [0430], and have served [05647] them, and have worshipped [07812] them, and have forsaken [05800] me, and have not kept [08104] my law [08451];
12 And ye have done [06213] worse [07489] than your fathers [01]; for, behold [02009], ye walk [01980] every one [0376] after [0310] the imagination [08307] of his evil [07451] heart [03820], that they may not hearken [08085] unto me:
11 He that toucheth [05060] the dead [04191] body [05315] of any man [0120] shall be unclean [02930] seven [07651] days [03117].
