touched my mouth--a symbolical act in supernatural vision, implying that God would give him utterance, notwithstanding his inability to speak (Jer 1:6). So Isaiah's lips were touched with a living coal (Isa 6:7; compare Eze 2:8-10; Dan 10:16). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Touched - "Made it touch." This was the symbol of the bestowal of divine grace and help, by which that want of eloquence, which the prophet had pleaded as a disqualification, was removed. |

The Consecration. - Jer 1:9. "And Jahveh stretched forth His hand, and touched my mouth, and Jahveh said to me, Behold, I put my words into thy mouth. Jer 1:10. Behold, I set thee this day over the nations, and over the kingdoms, to root up and to ruin, to destroy and to demolish, to build and to plant." In order to assure him by overt act of His support, the Lord gives him a palpable pledge. He stretches out His hand and causes it to touch his mouth (cf. Isa 6:7); while, as explanation of this symbolical act, He adds: I have put my words in thy mouth. The hand is the instrument of making and doing; the touching of Jeremiah's mouth by the hand of God is consequently an emblematical token that God frames in his mouth what he is to speak. It is a tangible pledge of ἔμπνευσις, inspiratio, embodiment of that influence exercised on the human spirit, by means of which the holy men of God speak, being moved by the Holy Ghost, Pe2 1:21 (Nδgelsb.). The act is a real occurrence, taking place not indeed in the earthly, corporeal sphere, but experienced in spirit, and of the nature of ecstasy. By means of it God has consecrated him to be His prophet, and endowed him for the discharge of his duties; He may now entrust him with His commission to the peoples and kingdoms, and set him over them as His prophet who proclaims to them His word. The contents of this proclaiming are indicated in the following infinitive clauses. With the words of the Lord he is to destroy and to build up peoples and kingdoms. The word of God is a power that carries out His will, and accomplishes that whereto He sends it, Isa 55:10. Against this power nothing earthly can stand; it is a hammer that breaks rocks in pieces, Jer 23:29. What is here said of the word of Jahveh to be preached by Jeremiah is said of Jahveh Himself in Jer 31:28. Its power is to show itself in two ways, in destroying and in building up. The destroying is not set down as a mere preliminary, but is expressed by means of four different words, whereas the building is given only in two words, and these standing after the four; in order, doubtless, to indicate that the labours of Jeremiah should consist, in the first place and for the most part, in proclaiming judgment upon the nations. The assonant verbs נתשׁ and נתץ are joined to heighten the sense; for the same reason להרוס is added to להאביד, and in the antithesis לנטוע is joined with לבנות.
(Note: The lxx have omitted להרוסa, and hence Hitz. infers the spuriousness of this word. But in the parallel passage, Jer 31:28, the lxx have rendered all the four words by the one καθαιρεῖν; and Hitz. does not then pronounce the other three spurious.) |

Then - God having excited the prophet by command and promise, now in a vision confirms him, either by the hand of an angel, or by himself in some visible shape. |
16 And, behold, one like the similitude [01823] of the sons [01121] of men [0120] touched [05060] my lips [08193]: then I opened [06605] my mouth [06310], and spake [01696], and said [0559] unto him that stood [05975] before me, O my lord [0113], by the vision [04759] my sorrows [06735] are turned [02015] upon me, and I have retained [06113] no strength [03581].
8 But thou, son [01121] of man [0120], hear [08085] what I say [01696] unto thee; Be not [01961] thou rebellious [04805] like that rebellious [04805] house [01004]: open [06475] thy mouth [06310], and eat [0398] that I give [05414] thee.
9 And when I looked [07200], behold, an hand [03027] was sent [07971] unto me; and, lo, a roll [04039] of a book [05612] was therein;
10 And he spread [06566] it before [06440] me; and it was written [03789] within [06440] and without [0268]: and there was written [03789] therein lamentations [07015], and mourning [01899], and woe [01958].
7 And he laid [05060] it upon my mouth [06310], and said [0559], Lo, this hath touched [05060] thy lips [08193]; and thine iniquity [05771] is taken away [05493], and thy sin [02403] purged [03722].
6 Then said [0559] I, Ah [0162], Lord [0136] GOD [03069]! behold, I cannot [03045] speak [01696]: for I am a child [05288].
28 And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over [08245] them, to pluck up [05428], and to break down [05422], and to throw down [02040], and to destroy [06], and to afflict [07489]; so will I watch over [08245] them, to build [01129], and to plant [05193], saith [05002] the LORD [03068].
29 Is not my word [01697] like [03541] as a fire [0784]? saith [05002] the LORD [03068]; and like a hammer [06360] that breaketh [06327] the rock [05553] in pieces [06327]?
10 For as the rain [01653] cometh down [03381], and the snow [07950] from heaven [08064], and returneth [07725] not thither, but watereth [07301] the earth [0776], and maketh it bring forth [03205] and bud [06779], that it may give [05414] seed [02233] to the sower [02232], and bread [03899] to the eater [0398]:
21 For [1063] the prophecy [4394] came [5342] not [3756] in old time [4218] by the will [2307] of man [444]: but [235] holy [40] men [444] of God [2316] spake [2980] as they were moved [5342] by [5259] the Holy [40] Ghost [4151].
7 And he laid [05060] it upon my mouth [06310], and said [0559], Lo, this hath touched [05060] thy lips [08193]; and thine iniquity [05771] is taken away [05493], and thy sin [02403] purged [03722].
10 See [07200], I have this day [03117] set [06485] thee over the nations [01471] and over the kingdoms [04467], to root out [05428], and to pull down [05422], and to destroy [06], and to throw down [02040], to build [01129], and to plant [05193].
9 Then the LORD [03068] put forth [07971] his hand [03027], and touched [05060] my mouth [06310]. And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto me, Behold, I have put [05414] my words [01697] in thy mouth [06310].
