tabret--Hebrew, toph, from the use of which in drowning the cries of children sacrificed to Moloch, Tophet received its name. Arabic, duf. A kettle drum, or tambourine.
pipe--flute or flageolet: from a Hebrew root "to bore through"; or else, "to dance" (compare Job 21:11-15).
regard not . . . Lord--a frequent effect of feasting (Job 1:5; Psa 28:5).
work . . . operation--in punishing the guilty (Isa 5:19; Isa 10:12). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The prophet proceeds to state still further the extent of their crimes. This verse contains an account of their dissipated habits, and their consequent forgetfulness of God. That they commonly had musical instruments in their feasts, is evident from many passages of the Old Testament; see Amo 6:5-6. Their feasts, also, were attended with songs; Isa 24:8-9.
The harp - - כנור kinnôr. This is a well-known stringed instrument, employed commonly in sacred music. It is often mentioned as having been used to express the pious feelings of David; Psa 32:2; Psa 43:4; Psa 49:5. It is early mentioned as having been invented by Jubal; Gen 4:21. It is supposed usually to have had ten strings (Josephus, "Ant." B. x. ch. xii. Section 3). It was played by the hand; Sa1 16:23; Sa1 18:9. The "root" of the word כנור kinnôr, is unknown. The word "kinnor" is used in all the languages cognate to the Hebrew, and is recognized even in the Persian. It is probable that the instrument here referred to was common in all the oriental nations, as it seems to have been known before the Flood, and of course the knowledge of it would be extended far. It is an oriental name and instrument, and from this word the Greeks derived their word κινύρα kinura. The Septuagint renders it κιθάρα kithara and κινύρα kinura.
Once they substitute for it ὄργανον organon, Psa 136:2; and five times ψαλτήριον psaltērion, Gen 4:20; Psa 48:4; Psa 80:2; Psa 149:3; Eze 26:13. The harp - כנור kinnôr - is not only mentioned as having been invented by Jubal, but it is also mentioned by Laban in the description which be gives of various solemnities, in regard to which he assures the fleeing Jacob that it had been his wish to accompany him with all the testimonials of joy - 'with music - תף tôph and כנור kinnôr;' Gen 31:27. In the first age it was consecrated to joy and exultation. Hence, it is referred to as the instrument employed by David to drive away the melancholy of Saul Sa1 16:16-22, and is the instrument usually employed to celebrate the praises of God; Psa 33:1-2; Psa 43:4; Psa 49:5; Psa 71:22-23. But the harp was not only used on sacred occasions. Isaiah also mentions it as carried about by courtezans Isa 23:16, and also refers to it as used on occasions of gathering in the vintage, and of increasing the joy of the festival occasion.
So also it was used in military triumphs. Under the reign of Jehoshaphat, after a victory which had been gained over the Moabites, they returned in triumph to Jerusalem, accompanied with playing on the כנור kinnôr;" Ch2 20:27-28. The harp was generally used on occasions of joy. Only in one place, in Isaiah Isa 16:11, is it referred to as having been employed in times of mourning. There is no ancient figure of the כנור kinnôr that can be relied on as genuine. We can only say that it was an instrument made of sounding wood, and furnished with strings. Josephus says that it was furnished with ten strings, and was played with the plectrum ("Ant." B. viii. ch. x.) Suidas, in his explanation of it, makes express mention of strings or sinews (p. 318); and Pollux speaks of goats' claws as being used for the plectrum. David made it out of the ברושׁ berôsh, or fir, and Solomon out of the almug. Pfeiffer supposes, that the strings were drawn over the belly of a hollow piece of wood, and that it had some resemblance to our violin. But it is more probable that the common representation of the harp as nearly in the form of a triangle, with one side or the front part missing, is the correct one. For a full discussion of the subject, see Pfeiffer on the Music of the ancient Hebrews, "Bib. Repos." vol. vi. pp. 366-373. Montfaucon has furnished a drawing of what was supposed to be the ancient כנור kinnôr, which is represented in the book. But, after all, the usual form is not quite certain.
Bruce found a sculpture of a harp resembling that usually put into the hands of David, or nearly in the form of a triangle, and under circumstances which led him to suppose that it was as old as the times of Sesostris.
And the viol - נבל nebel. From this word is derived the Greek word νάβλα nabla, and the Latin nablium and nabla. But it is not very easy to form a correct idea of this instrument. The derivation would lead us to suppose that it was something in the shape of a "bottle," and it is probable that it had a form in the shape of a leather bottle, such as is used in the East, or at least a vessel in which wine was preserved; Sa1 10:3; Sa1 25:18; Sa2 16:1. It was at first made of the ברושׁ berôsh or fir; afterward it was made of the almug tree, and occasionally it seems to have been made of metal; Sa2 6:5; Ch1 13:8. The external parts of the instrument were of wood, over which strings were drawn in various ways. Josephus says it had twelve strings ("Ant." B. viii. ch. x.) He says also that it was played with the fingers. - "Ibid." Hesychius and Pollux reckon it among stringed instruments. The resonance had its origin in the vessel or the bottom part of the instrument, upon which the strings were drawn. According to Ovid, this instrument was played on with both hands:
Quaravis mutus erat, voci favisse putatur
Piscis, Aroniae fabula nora lyrae.
Disce etiam duplice genialia palma
Verrere.
De Arte Amandi, lib. iii. 327.
According to Jerome, Isodorus, and Cassiodorus, it had the form of an inverted Greek Delta δ d. Pfeiffer supposes that this instrument was probably the same as is found represented on ancient monument. The belly of the instrument is a wooden bowl, having a small hole in the under part, and is covered over with a stretched skin, which is higher in the middle than at the sides. Two posts, which are fastened together at the top by a cross piece, pass obliquely through this skin. Five strings pass over this skin, having a bridge for their support on the cross piece. The instrument has no pins or screws, but every string is fastened by means of some linen wound with it around this cross piece. The description of this instrument is furnished by Niebuhr ("Thess." i. p. 179). It is played on in two ways, either by being struck with the finger, or by a piece of leather, or perhaps a quill hung at its side and drawn across the strings. It cannot with certainty be determined when this instrument was invented, or when it came into use among the Hebrews. It is first mentioned in the time of Saul Sa1 10:5, and from this time onward it is frequently mentioned in the Old Testament. It was used particularly in the public worship of God; Sa2 6:5; Kg1 10:12; Ch2 20:28; Ch2 29:25; Ch1 15:16; Ch1 16:5. It was usually accompanied with other instruments, and was also used in festivals and entertainments; see "Bib. Repos." vol. vi. pp. 357-365. The usual form of representing it is shown in the preceding cut, and is the form in which the lyre appears on ancient monuments, in connection with the statues of Apollo.
The drawing in the book is a representation of a lyre from a Jewish shekel of the time of Simon Maccabeus, and may have been, not improbably, a form in frequent use among the Jews.
Niebuhr has furnished us with an instrument from the East, which is supposed to bare a very near resemblance to that which is referred to by Isaiah. This instrument is represented by the picture in the book.
The tabret - תף tôph. This was one of the instruments which were struck with the hands. It was the kettle-drum of the ancients, and it is more easy to determine its form and use than it is of most of the instruments used by the Hebrews. The Septuagint and other Greek translators render it by τύμπανον tumpanon. This word, as well as the Latin tympanum, is manifestly derived from the Hebrew. The Arabic word "duf" applied to the same instrument is also derived from the same Hebrew word. It was an instrument of wood, hollowed out, and covered over with leather and struck with the hands - a species of drum, This form of the drum is used by the Spaniards, and they have preserved it ever since the time of the Moors. It was early used. Laban wished to accompany Jacob with its sound; Gen 31:27. Miriam, the sister of Moses, and the females with her, accompanied the song of victory with this instrument; Exo 15:20.
Job was acquainted with it Job 17:6; Job 21:12, and David employed it in the festivities of religion; Sa2 6:5. The occasions on which it is mentioned as being used are joyful occasions, and for the most part those who play on it are females, and on this account they are called 'drum-beating women' Psa 68:26 - in our translation, 'damsels playing with timbrels,' In our translation it is rendered "tabret," Isa 5:12; Sa1 10:5; Gen 31:26; Isa 24:8; Isa 30:32; Sa1 18:6; Eze 38:13; Jer 31:4; Job 17:6; "tabering," Nah 2:7; and "timbrel," Psa 81:2; Exo 15:20; Job 21:12; Psa 149:3; Psa 150:4; Jdg 11:34; Psa 68:25. It is no where mentioned as employed in war or warlike transactions. It was sometimes made by merely stretching leather over a wooden hoop, and thus answered to the instrument known among us as the tambourine. It was in the form of a sieve, and is often found on ancient monuments, and particularly in the hands of Cybele. In the East, there is now no instrument more common than this.
Niebuhr (Thes i. p. 181) has given the following description of it: 'It is a broad hoop covered on one side with a stretched skin. In the rim there are usually thin round pullies or wheels of metal which make some noise, when this drum, held on high with one hand, is struck with the fingers of the other hand. No musical instrument perhaps is so much employed in Turkey as this. When the females in their harems dance or sing, the time is always beat on this instrument. It is called doff.' See "Bib. Repos." vol. vi. pp. 398-402. it is commonly supposed that from the word "toph, Tophet" is derived - a name given to the valley of Jehoshaphat near Jerusalem, because this instrument was used there to drown the cries of children when sacrificed to Moloch.
And pipe. - חליל châlı̂yl. This word is derived either from חלל châlal, "to bore through," and thence conveys the idea of a flute bored through, and furnished with holes ("Gesenius"); or from חלל châlal, "to leap" or "to dance;" and thence it conveys the idea of an instrument that was played on at the dance. - "Pfeiffer."
The Greek translators have always rendered it by αὐλός aulos. There are, in all, but four places where it occurs in the Old Testament; Kg1 1:40; Isa 5:12; Isa 30:29; Jer 48:36; and it is uniformly rendered "pipe or pipes," by our translators. The origin of the pipe is unknown. It was possessed by most ancient nations, though it differed much in form. It was made sometimes of wood, at others of reed, at others of the bones of animals, horns, etc. The "box-wood" has been the common material out of which it was made. It was sometimes used for plaintive music (compare Mat 9:23); but it was also employed in connection with other instruments, while journeying up to Jerusalem to attend the great feasts there; see the note at Isa 30:29. Though employed on plaintive occasions, yet it was also employed in times of joy and pleasure. Hence, in the times of Judas Maccabeus, the Jews complained 'that all joy had vanished from Jacob, and, that the flute and cithera were silent;' 1 Macc. 3:45; see "Bib. Repos." vol. vi. pp. 387-392. The graceful figures (shown in the book) will show the manner of playing the flute or pipe among the Greeks. It was also a common art to play the double flute or pipe, in the East, in the manner represented in the book. In the use of these instruments, in itself there could be no impropriety. That which the prophet rebuked was, that they employed them not for praise, or even for innocent amusement, but that they introduced them to their feasts of revelry, and thus made them the occasion of forgetting God. Forgetfulness of God, in connection with music and dancing, is beautifully described by Job:
They send forth their little ones like a flock,
And their children dance;
They take the timbrel and harp,
And rejoice at the sound of the organ;
They spend their days in mirth,
And in a moment go down to the grave.
And they say unto God -
'Depart from us;
For we know not the knowledge of thy ways.
What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
And what profit should we have if we pray unto him?'
Job 21:11-15.
In their feasts - 'The Nabathaeans of Arabia Petrea always introduced music at their entertainments (Strabo, xvi.), and the custom seems to have been very general among the ancients. They are mentioned as having been essential among the Greeks, from the earliest times; and are pronounced by Homer to be requisite at a feast:
Μολπή τ ̓ ὀρχηστύ; τε τά γάρ τ ̓ ἀναθήματα δαιτός.
Molpē t' orchēstu; te ta gar t' anathēmata daitos.
Odyssey i. 152.
Aristoxenus, quoted by Plutarch, "De Musica," says, that 'the music was designed to counteract the effects of inebriety, for as wine discomposes the body and the mind, so music has the power of soothing them, and of restoring their previous calmness and tranquility.' "See Wilkinsoh's Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians," vol. ii. pp. 248, 249.
But they regard not ... - The reproof is especially, that they forget him in their entertainments. They employ music to inflame their passions; and amid their songs and wine, their hearts are drawn away from God. That this is the tendency of such feasts, all must know. God is commonly forgotten in such places; and even the sweetest music is made the occasion for stealing the affections from him, and of inflaming the passions, instead of being employed to soften the feelings of the soul, and raise the heart to God.
The operation of his hands - The work of his hands - particularly his dealings among the people. God is round about them with mercy and judgment, but they do not perceive him. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
Isa 5:12 describes how they go on in their blindness with music and carousing: "And guitar and harp, kettle-drum, and flute, and wine, is their feast; but they regard not the work of Jehovah, and see not the purpose of His hands." "Their feast" is so and so (משׁתּיהם is only a plural in appearance; it is really a singular, as in Dan 1:10, Dan 1:16, and many other passages, with the Yod of the primary form, משׁתּי = משׁתּה, softened: see the remarks on עלה at Isa 1:30, and עשׂיה at Isa 22:11); that is to say, their feast consisted or was composed of exciting music and wine. Knobel construes it, "and there are guitar, etc., and wine is their drink;" but a divided sentence of this kind is very tame; and the other expression, based upon the general principle, "The whole is its parts," is thoroughly Semitic (see Fleischer's Abhandlungen ber einige Arten der Nominalapposition in den Sitzungsberichten der schs. Gesellschaft der Wissenschaft, 1862). Cinnor (guitar) is a general name for such instruments as have their strings drawn (upon a bridge) over a sounding board; and nebel (the harp and lyre) a general name for instruments with their strings hung freely, so as to be played with both hands at the same time. Toph (Arab. duff) is a general name for the tambourin, the drum, and the kettle-drum; Chaill (lit. that which is bored through) a general name for the flute and double flute. In this tumult and riot they had no thought or eye for the work of Jehovah and the purpose of His hands. This is the phrase used to express the idea of eternal counsel of God (Isa 37:26), which leads to salvation by the circuitous paths of judgment (Isa 10:12; Isa 28:21; Isa 29:23), so far as that counsel is embodied in history, as moulded by the invisible interposition of God. In their joy and glory they had no sense for what was the most glorious of all, viz., the moving and working of God in history; so that they could not even discern the judgment which was in course of preparation at that very time. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
The harp - They give up themselves wholly to luxury. The work - What God hath lately done, and is yet doing, and about to do among them; his grievous judgments, partly inflicted, and partly threatened, which required another course of life. |
12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord [0136] hath performed [01214] his whole work [04639] upon mount [02022] Zion [06726] and on Jerusalem [03389], I will punish [06485] the fruit [06529] of the stout [01433] heart [03824] of the king [04428] of Assyria [0804], and the glory [08597] of his high [07312] looks [05869].
19 That say [0559], Let him make speed [04116], and hasten [02363] his work [04639], that we may see [07200] it: and let the counsel [06098] of the Holy One [06918] of Israel [03478] draw nigh [07126] and come [0935], that we may know [03045] it!
5 Because they regard [0995] not the works [06468] of the LORD [03068], nor the operation [04639] of his hands [03027], he shall destroy [02040] them, and not build them up [01129].
5 And it was so, when the days [03117] of their feasting [04960] were gone about [05362], that Job [0347] sent [07971] and sanctified [06942] them, and rose up early [07925] in the morning [01242], and offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] according to the number [04557] of them all: for Job [0347] said [0559], It may be [0194] that my sons [01121] have sinned [02398], and cursed [01288] God [0430] in their hearts [03824]. Thus did [06213] Job [0347] continually [03117].
11 They send forth [07971] their little ones [05759] like a flock [06629], and their children [03206] dance [07540].
12 They take [05375] the timbrel [08596] and harp [03658], and rejoice [08055] at the sound [06963] of the organ [05748].
13 They spend [03615] [01086] their days [03117] in wealth [02896], and in a moment [07281] go down [02865] [05181] to the grave [07585].
14 Therefore they say [0559] unto God [0410], Depart [05493] from us; for we desire [02654] not the knowledge [01847] of thy ways [01870].
15 What is the Almighty [07706], that we should serve [05647] him? and what profit [03276] should we have, if we pray [06293] unto him?
5 That chant [06527] to the sound [06310] of the viol [05035], and invent [02803] to themselves instruments [03627] of musick [07892], like David [01732];
6 That drink [08354] wine [03196] in bowls [04219], and anoint [04886] themselves with the chief [07225] ointments [08081]: but they are not grieved [02470] for the affliction [07667] of Joseph [03130].
8 The mirth [04885] of tabrets [08596] ceaseth [07673], the noise [07588] of them that rejoice [05947] endeth [02308], the joy [04885] of the harp [03658] ceaseth [07673].
9 They shall not drink [08354] wine [03196] with a song [07892]; strong drink [07941] shall be bitter [04843] to them that drink [08354] it.
29 Ye shall have a song [07892], as in the night [03915] when a holy [06942] solemnity [02282] is kept [06942]; and gladness [08057] of heart [03824], as when one goeth [01980] with a pipe [02485] to come [0935] into the mountain [02022] of the LORD [03068], to the mighty One [06697] of Israel [03478].
23 And [2532] when Jesus [2424] came [2064] into [1519] the ruler's [758] house [3614], and [2532] saw [1492] the minstrels [834] and [2532] the people [3793] making a noise [2350],
36 Therefore mine heart [03820] shall sound [01993] for Moab [04124] like pipes [02485], and mine heart [03820] shall sound [01993] like pipes [02485] for the men [0582] of Kirheres [07025]: because the riches [03502] that he hath gotten [06213] are perished [06].
12 And the harp [03658], and the viol [05035], the tabret [08596], and pipe [02485], and wine [03196], are in their feasts [04960]: but they regard [05027] not the work [06467] of the LORD [03068], neither consider [07200] the operation [04639] of his hands [03027].
40 And all the people [05971] came up [05927] after [0310] him, and the people [05971] piped [02490] with pipes [02485], and rejoiced [08056] with great [01419] joy [08057], so that the earth [0776] rent [01234] with the sound [06963] of them.
25 The singers [07891] went before [06923], the players on instruments [05059] followed after [0310]; among [08432] them were the damsels [05959] playing with timbrels [08608].
34 And Jephthah [03316] came [0935] to Mizpeh [04709] unto his house [01004], and, behold, his daughter [01323] came out [03318] to meet [07125] him with timbrels [08596] and with dances [04246]: and she was his only child [03173]; beside her he had neither son [01121] nor [0176] daughter [01323].
4 Praise [01984] him with the timbrel [08596] and dance [04234]: praise [01984] him with stringed instruments [04482] and organs [05748].
3 Let them praise [01984] his name [08034] in the dance [04234]: let them sing praises [02167] unto him with the timbrel [08596] and harp [03658].
12 They take [05375] the timbrel [08596] and harp [03658], and rejoice [08055] at the sound [06963] of the organ [05748].
20 And Miriam [04813] the prophetess [05031], the sister [0269] of Aaron [0175], took [03947] a timbrel [08596] in her hand [03027]; and all the women [0802] went out [03318] after [0310] her with timbrels [08596] and with dances [04246].
2 Take [05375] a psalm [02172], and bring [05414] hither the timbrel [08596], the pleasant [05273] harp [03658] with the psaltery [05035].
7 And Huzzab [05324] shall be led away captive [01540], she shall be brought up [05927], and her maids [0519] shall lead [05090] her as with the voice [06963] of doves [03123], tabering [08608] upon their breasts [03824].
6 He hath made [03322] me also a byword [04914] of the people [05971]; and aforetime [06440] I was as a tabret [08611].
4 Again I will build [01129] thee, and thou shalt be built [01129], O virgin [01330] of Israel [03478]: thou shalt again be adorned [05710] with thy tabrets [08596], and shalt go forth [03318] in the dances [04234] of them that make merry [07832].
13 Sheba [07614], and Dedan [01719], and the merchants [05503] of Tarshish [08659], with all the young lions [03715] thereof, shall say [0559] unto thee, Art thou come [0935] to take [07997] a spoil [07998]? hast thou gathered [06950] thy company [06951] to take [0962] a prey [0957]? to carry away [05375] silver [03701] and gold [02091], to take away [03947] cattle [04735] and goods [07075], to take [07997] a great [01419] spoil [07998]?
6 And it came to pass as they came [0935], when David [01732] was returned [07725] from the slaughter [05221] of the Philistine [06430], that the women [0802] came out [03318] of all cities [05892] of Israel [03478], singing [07891] and dancing [04246], to meet [07125] king [04428] Saul [07586], with tabrets [08596], with joy [08057], and with instruments of musick [07991].
32 And in every place [03605] where the grounded [04145] staff [04294] shall pass [04569], which the LORD [03068] shall lay [05117] upon him, it shall be with tabrets [08596] and harps [03658]: and in battles [04421] of shaking [08573] will he fight [03898] with it.
8 The mirth [04885] of tabrets [08596] ceaseth [07673], the noise [07588] of them that rejoice [05947] endeth [02308], the joy [04885] of the harp [03658] ceaseth [07673].
26 And Laban [03837] said [0559] to Jacob [03290], What hast thou done [06213], that thou hast stolen away [01589] unawares [03824] to me, and carried away [05090] my daughters [01323], as captives [07617] taken with the sword [02719]?
5 After [0310] that thou shalt come [0935] to the hill [01389] of God [0430], where is the garrison [05333] of the Philistines [06430]: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither [0935] to the city [05892], that thou shalt meet [06293] a company [02256] of prophets [05030] coming down [03381] from the high place [01116] with a psaltery [05035], and a tabret [08596], and a pipe [02485], and a harp [03658], before [06440] them; and they shall prophesy [05012]:
12 And the harp [03658], and the viol [05035], the tabret [08596], and pipe [02485], and wine [03196], are in their feasts [04960]: but they regard [05027] not the work [06467] of the LORD [03068], neither consider [07200] the operation [04639] of his hands [03027].
26 Bless [01288] ye God [0430] in the congregations [04721], even the Lord [0136], from the fountain [04726] of Israel [03478].
5 And David [01732] and all the house [01004] of Israel [03478] played [07832] before [06440] the LORD [03068] on all manner of instruments made of fir [01265] wood [06086], even on harps [03658], and on psalteries [05035], and on timbrels [08596], and on cornets [04517], and on cymbals [06767].
12 They take [05375] the timbrel [08596] and harp [03658], and rejoice [08055] at the sound [06963] of the organ [05748].
6 He hath made [03322] me also a byword [04914] of the people [05971]; and aforetime [06440] I was as a tabret [08611].
20 And Miriam [04813] the prophetess [05031], the sister [0269] of Aaron [0175], took [03947] a timbrel [08596] in her hand [03027]; and all the women [0802] went out [03318] after [0310] her with timbrels [08596] and with dances [04246].
27 Wherefore didst thou flee away [01272] secretly [02244], and steal away [01589] from me; and didst not tell [05046] me, that I might have sent thee away [07971] with mirth [08057], and with songs [07892], with tabret [08596], and with harp [03658]?
5 Asaph [0623] the chief [07218], and next [04932] to him Zechariah [02148], Jeiel [03273], and Shemiramoth [08070], and Jehiel [03171], and Mattithiah [04993], and Eliab [0446], and Benaiah [01141], and Obededom [05654]: and Jeiel [03273] with psalteries [05035] [03627] and with harps [03658]; but Asaph [0623] made a sound [08085] with cymbals [04700];
16 And David [01732] spake [0559] to the chief [08269] of the Levites [03881] to appoint [05975] their brethren [0251] to be the singers [07891] with instruments [03627] of musick [07892], psalteries [05035] and harps [03658] and cymbals [04700], sounding [08085], by lifting up [07311] the voice [06963] with joy [08057].
25 And he set [05975] the Levites [03881] in the house [01004] of the LORD [03068] with cymbals [04700], with psalteries [05035], and with harps [03658], according to the commandment [04687] of David [01732], and of Gad [01410] the king's [04428] seer [02374], and Nathan [05416] the prophet [05030]: for so was the commandment [04687] of [03027] the LORD [03068] by [03027] his prophets [05030].
28 And they came [0935] to Jerusalem [03389] with psalteries [05035] and harps [03658] and trumpets [02689] unto the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
12 And the king [04428] made [06213] of the almug [0484] trees [06086] pillars [04552] for the house [01004] of the LORD [03068], and for the king's [04428] house [01004], harps [03658] also and psalteries [05035] for singers [07891]: there came [0935] no such almug [0484] trees [06086], nor were seen [07200] unto this day [03117].
8 And David [01732] and all Israel [03478] played [07832] before [06440] God [0430] with all their might [05797], and with singing [07892], and with harps [03658], and with psalteries [05035], and with timbrels [08596], and with cymbals [04700], and with trumpets [02689].
1 And when David [01732] was a little [04592] past [05674] the top [07218] of the hill, behold, Ziba [06717] the servant [05288] of Mephibosheth [04648] met [07125] him, with a couple [06776] of asses [02543] saddled [02280], and upon them two hundred [03967] loaves of bread [03899], and an hundred [03967] bunches of raisins [06778], and an hundred [03967] of summer fruits [07019], and a bottle [05035] of wine [03196].
18 Then Abigail [026] made haste [04116], and took [03947] two hundred [03967] loaves [03899], and two [08147] bottles [05035] of wine [03196], and five [02568] sheep [06629] ready dressed [06213], and five [02568] measures [05429] of parched [07039] corn, and an hundred [03967] clusters of raisins [06778], and two hundred [03967] cakes [01690] of figs, and laid [07760] them on asses [02543].
3 Then shalt thou go on [02498] forward [01973] from thence, and thou shalt come [0935] to the plain [0436] of Tabor [08396], and there shall meet [04672] thee three [07969] men [0582] going up [05927] to God [0430] to Bethel [01008], one [0259] carrying [05375] three [07969] kids [01423], and another [0259] carrying [05375] three [07969] loaves [03603] of bread [03899], and another [0259] carrying [05375] a bottle [05035] of wine [03196]:
11 Wherefore my bowels [04578] shall sound [01993] like an harp [03658] for Moab [04124], and mine inward parts [07130] for Kirharesh [07025].
27 Then they returned [07725], every man [0376] of Judah [03063] and Jerusalem [03389], and Jehoshaphat [03092] in the forefront [07218] of them, to go again [07725] to Jerusalem [03389] with joy [08057]; for the LORD [03068] had made them to rejoice [08055] over their enemies [0341].
28 And they came [0935] to Jerusalem [03389] with psalteries [05035] and harps [03658] and trumpets [02689] unto the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
16 Take [03947] an harp [03658], go about [05437] the city [05892], thou harlot [02181] that hast been forgotten [07911]; make sweet [03190] melody [05059], sing many [07235] songs [07892], that thou mayest be remembered [02142].
22 I will also praise [03034] thee with the psaltery [03627] [05035], even thy truth [0571], O my God [0430]: unto thee will I sing [02167] with the harp [03658], O thou Holy One [06918] of Israel [03478].
23 My lips [08193] shall greatly rejoice [07442] when I sing [02167] unto thee; and my soul [05315], which thou hast redeemed [06299].
5 Wherefore should I fear [03372] in the days [03117] of evil [07451], when the iniquity [05771] of my heels [06120] shall compass [05437] me about?
4 Then will I go [0935] unto the altar [04196] of God [0430], unto God [0410] my exceeding [08057] joy [01524]: yea, upon the harp [03658] will I praise [03034] thee, O God [0430] my God [0430].
1 Rejoice [07442] in the LORD [03068], O ye righteous [06662]: for praise [08416] is comely [05000] for the upright [03477].
2 Praise [03034] the LORD [03068] with harp [03658]: sing [02167] unto him with the psaltery [05035] and an instrument of ten strings [06218].
16 Let our lord [0113] now command [0559] thy servants [05650], which are before [06440] thee, to seek out [01245] a man [0376], who is a cunning [03045] player [05059] on an harp [03658]: and it shall come to pass, when the evil [07451] spirit [07307] from God [0430] is upon thee, that he shall play [05059] with his hand [03027], and thou shalt be well [02895].
17 And Saul [07586] said [0559] unto his servants [05650], Provide [07200] me now a man [0376] that can play [05059] well [03190], and bring [0935] him to me.
18 Then answered [06030] one [0259] of the servants [05288], and said [0559], Behold, I have seen [07200] a son [01121] of Jesse [03448] the Bethlehemite [01022], that is cunning [03045] in playing [05059], and a mighty [01368] valiant man [02428], and a man [0376] of war [04421], and prudent [0995] in matters [01697], and a comely [08389] person [0376], and the LORD [03068] is with him.
19 Wherefore Saul [07586] sent [07971] messengers [04397] unto Jesse [03448], and said [0559], Send [07971] me David [01732] thy son [01121], which is with the sheep [06629].
20 And Jesse [03448] took [03947] an ass [02543] laden with bread [03899], and a bottle [04997] of wine [03196], and a [0259] kid [01423] [05795], and sent [07971] them by [03027] David [01732] his son [01121] unto Saul [07586].
21 And David [01732] came [0935] to Saul [07586], and stood [05975] before [06440] him: and he loved [0157] him greatly [03966]; and he became his armourbearer [05375] [03627].
22 And Saul [07586] sent [07971] to Jesse [03448], saying [0559], Let David [01732], I pray thee, stand [05975] before [06440] me; for he hath found [04672] favour [02580] in my sight [05869].
27 Wherefore didst thou flee away [01272] secretly [02244], and steal away [01589] from me; and didst not tell [05046] me, that I might have sent thee away [07971] with mirth [08057], and with songs [07892], with tabret [08596], and with harp [03658]?
13 And I will cause the noise [01995] of thy songs [07892] to cease [07673]; and the sound [06963] of thy harps [03658] shall be no more heard [08085].
3 Let them praise [01984] his name [08034] in the dance [04234]: let them sing praises [02167] unto him with the timbrel [08596] and harp [03658].
2 Before [06440] Ephraim [0669] and Benjamin [01144] and Manasseh [04519] stir up [05782] thy strength [01369], and come [03212] and save [03444] us.
4 For, lo, the kings [04428] were assembled [03259], they passed by [05674] together [03162].
20 And Adah [05711] bare [03205] Jabal [02989]: he was the father [01] of such as dwell [03427] in tents [0168], and of such as have cattle [04735].
2 O give thanks [03034] unto the God [0430] of gods [0430]: for his mercy [02617] endureth for ever [05769].
9 And Saul [07586] eyed [05770] David [01732] from that day [03117] and forward [01973].
23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit [07307] from God [0430] was upon Saul [07586], that David [01732] took [03947] an harp [03658], and played [05059] with his hand [03027]: so Saul [07586] was refreshed [07304], and was well [02895], and the evil [07451] spirit [07307] departed [05493] from him.
21 And his brother's [0251] name [08034] was Jubal [03106]: he was the father [01] of all such as handle [08610] the harp [03658] and organ [05748].
2 Blessed [0835] is the man [0120] unto whom the LORD [03068] imputeth [02803] not iniquity [05771], and in whose spirit [07307] there is no guile [07423].
5 That chant [06527] to the sound [06310] of the viol [05035], and invent [02803] to themselves instruments [03627] of musick [07892], like David [01732];
6 That drink [08354] wine [03196] in bowls [04219], and anoint [04886] themselves with the chief [07225] ointments [08081]: but they are not grieved [02470] for the affliction [07667] of Joseph [03130].
23 But when he seeth [07200] his children [03206], the work [04639] of mine hands [03027], in the midst [07130] of him, they shall sanctify [06942] my name [08034], and sanctify [06942] the Holy One [06918] of Jacob [03290], and shall fear [06206] the God [0430] of Israel [03478].
21 For the LORD [03068] shall rise up [06965] as in mount [02022] Perazim [06559], he shall be wroth [07264] as in the valley [06010] of Gibeon [01391], that he may do [06213] his work [04639], his strange [02114] work [04639]; and bring to pass [05647] his act [05656], his strange [05237] act [05656].
26 Hast thou not heard [08085] long ago [07350], how I have done [06213] it; and of ancient [06924] times [03117], that I have formed [03335] it? now have I brought [0935] it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste [07582] defenced [01219] cities [05892] into ruinous [05327] heaps [01530].
11 Ye made [06213] also a ditch [04724] between the two walls [02346] for the water [04325] of the old [03465] pool [01295]: but ye have not looked [05027] unto the maker [06213] thereof, neither had respect [07200] unto him that fashioned [03335] it long ago [07350].
30 For ye shall be as an oak [0424] whose leaf [05929] fadeth [05034], and as a garden [01593] that hath no water [04325].
16 Thus Melzar [04453] took away [05375] the portion of their meat [06598], and the wine [03196] that they should drink [04960]; and gave [05414] them pulse [02235].
10 And the prince [08269] of the eunuchs [05631] said [0559] unto Daniel [01840], I fear [03373] my lord [0113] the king [04428], who hath appointed [04487] your meat [03978] and your drink [04960]: for why should he see [07200] your faces [06440] worse liking [02196] than the children [03206] which are of your sort [01524]? then shall ye make me endanger [02325] my head [07218] to the king [04428].
12 And the harp [03658], and the viol [05035], the tabret [08596], and pipe [02485], and wine [03196], are in their feasts [04960]: but they regard [05027] not the work [06467] of the LORD [03068], neither consider [07200] the operation [04639] of his hands [03027].
