Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
death--that is, the dead; Hades and its inhabitants (Job 28:22; see on Isa 38:11). Plainly Hezekiah believed in a world of disembodied spirits; his language does not imply what skepticism has drawn from it, but simply that he regarded the disembodied state as one incapable of declaring the praises of God before men, for it is, as regards this world, an unseen land of stillness; "the living" alone can praise God on earth, in reference to which only he is speaking; Isa 57:1-2 shows that at this time the true view of the blessedness of the righteous dead was held, though not with the full clearness of the Gospel, which "has brought life and immortality to light" (Ti2 1:10).
hope for thy truth-- (Psa 104:27). Their probation is at an end. They can no longer exercise faith and hope in regard to Thy faithfulness to Thy promises, which are limited to the present state. For "hope" ceases (even in the case of the godly) when sight begins (Rom 8:24-25); the ungodly have "no hope" (Th1 4:13). Hope in God's truth is one of the grounds of praise to God (Psa 71:14; Psa 119:49). Others translate, "cannot celebrate." |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
For the grave cannot praise thee - The Hebrew word here is sheol. It is put by metonymy here for those who are in the grave, that is, for the dead. The word 'praise' here refers evidently to the public and solemn celebration of the goodness of God. It is clear, I think, that Hezekiah had a belief in a future state, or that he expected to dwell with 'the inhabitants of the land of silence' Isa 38:11 when he died. But he did not regard that state as one adapted to the celebration of the public praises of God. It was a land of darkness; an abode of silence and stillness; a place where there was no temple, and no public praise such as he had been accustomed to. A similar sentiment is expressed by David in Psa 6:5 :
For in death there is no remembrance of thee;
In the grave who shall give thee thanks?
In regard to the Jewish conceptions of the state of the dead, see the notes at Isa 14:15, Isa 14:19.
(See the Supplementary note at Isa 14:9; also the Prefatory Remarks by the Editor on the Author's exposition of Job. The ideas entertained by the Author on the state of knowledge among the ancient saints regarding a future world, cannot but be regarded as especially unfortunate. After the fashion of some German critics, the Old Testament worthies are reduced to the same level with the heroes of Homer and Virgil, as far as this matter is concerned at least.)
Cannot hope for thy truth - They are shut out from all the means by which thy truth is brought to the mind, and the offers of salvation are presented. Their probation is at an end; their privileges are closed; their destiny is sealed up. The idea is, it is a privilege to live, because this is a world where the offers of salvation are made, and where those who are conscious of guilt may hope in the mercy of God. |

Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
In strophe 4 he rejoices in the preservation of his life as the highest good, and promises to praise God for it as long as he lives.
"For Hades does not praise Thee; death does not sing praises to Thee:
They that sink into the grave do not hope for Thy truth.
The living, the living, he praises Thee, as I do today;
The father to the children makes known Thy truth.
Jehovah is ready to give me salvation;
Therefore will we play my stringed instruments all the days of my life
In the house of Jehovah."
We have here that comfortless idea of the future state, which is so common in the Psalms (vid., Psa 6:6; Psa 30:10; Psa 88:12-13, cf., Psa 115:17), and also in the book of Ecclesiastes (Ecc 9:4-5, Ecc 9:10). The foundation of this idea, notwithstanding the mythological dress, is an actual truth (vid., Psychol. p. 409), which the personal faith of the hero of Job endeavours to surmount (Comment. pp. 150-153, and elsewhere), but the decisive removal of which was only to be effected by the progressive history of salvation. The v. is introduced with "for" (kı̄), inasmuch as the gracious act of God is accounted for on the ground that He wished to be still further glorified by His servant whom He delivered. לא, in Isa 38:18, is written only once instead of twice, as in Isa 23:4. They "sink into the grave," i.e., are not thought of as dying, but as already dead. "Truth" ('ĕmeth) is the sincerity of God, with which He keeps His promises. Isa 38:19 reminds us that Manasseh, who was twelve years old when he succeeded his father, was not yet born (cf., Isa 39:7). The להושׁיעני יהוה, μέλλει σώζειν με, is the same as in Isa 37:26. The change in the number in Isa 38:20 may be explained from the fact that the writer thought of himself as the choral leader of his family; ay is a suffix, not a substantive termination (Ewald, 164, p. 427). The impression follows us to the end, that we have cultivated rather than original poetry here. Hezekiah's love to the older sacred literature is well known. He restored the liturgical psalmody (Ch2 29:30). He caused a further collection of proverbs to be made, as a supplement to the older book of Proverbs (Pro 25:1). The "men of Hezekiah" resembled the Pisistratian Society, of which Onomacritos was the head. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Praise - The dead are not capable of glorifying thy name among men upon earth. They cannot expect nor receive the accomplishment of thy promised goodness in the land of the living. |
49 ZAIN. Remember [02142] the word [01697] unto thy servant [05650], upon which thou hast caused me to hope [03176].
14 But I will hope [03176] continually [08548], and will yet praise [08416] thee more [03254] and more [03254].
13 But [1161] I would [2309] not [3756] have [2309] you [5209] to be ignorant [50], brethren [80], concerning [4012] them which are asleep [2837], that [3363] ye sorrow [3076] not [3363], even [2532] as [2531] others [3062] which [3588] have [2192] no [3361] hope [1680].
24 For [1063] we are saved [4982] by hope [1680]: but [1161] hope [1680] that is seen [991] is [2076] not [3756] hope [1680]: for [1063] what [3739] a man [5100] seeth [991], why [5101] doth he [1679] yet [2532] hope for [1679]?
25 But [1161] if [1487] we hope [1679] for that [3739] we see [991] not [3756], then do we [553] with [1223] patience [5281] wait for [553] it.
27 These wait [07663] all upon thee; that thou mayest give [05414] them their meat [0400] in due season [06256].
10 But [1161] is [5319] now [3568] made manifest [5319] by [1223] the appearing [2015] of our [2257] Saviour [4990] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], who [3303] hath abolished [2673] death [2288], and [1161] hath brought [5461] life [2222] and [2532] immortality [861] to light [5461] through [1223] the gospel [2098]:
1 The righteous [06662] perisheth [06], and no man [0376] layeth [07760] it to heart [03820]: and merciful [02617] men [0582] are taken away [0622], none considering [0995] that the righteous [06662] is taken away [0622] from [06440] the evil [07451] to come.
2 He shall enter [0935] into peace [07965]: they shall rest [05117] in their beds [04904], each one walking [01980] in his uprightness [05228].
11 I said [0559], I shall not see [07200] the LORD [03050], even the LORD [03050], in the land [0776] of the living [02416]: I shall behold [05027] man [0120] no more with the inhabitants [03427] of the world [02309].
22 Destruction [011] and death [04194] say [0559], We have heard [08085] the fame [08088] thereof with our ears [0241].
9 Hell [07585] from beneath is moved [07264] for thee to meet [07125] thee at thy coming [0935]: it stirreth up [05782] the dead [07496] for thee, even all the chief ones [06260] of the earth [0776]; it hath raised up [06965] from their thrones [03678] all the kings [04428] of the nations [01471].
19 But thou art cast out [07993] of thy grave [06913] like an abominable [08581] branch [05342], and as the raiment [03830] of those that are slain [02026], thrust through [02944] with a sword [02719], that go down [03381] to the stones [068] of the pit [0953]; as a carcase [06297] trodden under feet [0947].
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down [03381] to hell [07585], to the sides [03411] of the pit [0953].
5 For in death [04194] there is no remembrance [02143] of thee: in the grave [07585] who shall give thee thanks [03034]?
11 I said [0559], I shall not see [07200] the LORD [03050], even the LORD [03050], in the land [0776] of the living [02416]: I shall behold [05027] man [0120] no more with the inhabitants [03427] of the world [02309].
10 Whatsoever thy hand [03027] findeth [04672] to do [06213], do [06213] it with thy might [03581]; for there is no work [04639], nor device [02808], nor knowledge [01847], nor wisdom [02451], in the grave [07585], whither thou goest [01980].
5 Yea also, because he transgresseth [0898] by wine [03196], he is a proud [03093] man [01397], neither keepeth at home [05115], who enlargeth [07337] his desire [05315] as hell [07585], and is as death [04194], and cannot be satisfied [07646], but gathereth [0622] unto him all nations [01471], and heapeth [06908] unto him all people [05971]:
1 These are also proverbs [04912] of Solomon [08010], which the men [0582] of Hezekiah [02396] king [04428] of Judah [03063] copied out [06275].
30 Moreover Hezekiah [03169] the king [04428] and the princes [08269] commanded [0559] the Levites [03881] to sing praise [01984] unto the LORD [03068] with the words [01697] of David [01732], and of Asaph [0623] the seer [02374]. And they sang praises [01984] with gladness [08057], and they bowed their heads [06915] and worshipped [07812].
20 The LORD [03068] was ready to save [03467] me: therefore we will sing my songs [05058] to the stringed instruments [05059] all the days [03117] of our life [02416] in the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
26 Hast thou not heard [08085] long ago [07350], how I have done [06213] it; and of ancient [06924] times [03117], that I have formed [03335] it? now have I brought [0935] it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste [07582] defenced [01219] cities [05892] into ruinous [05327] heaps [01530].
7 And of thy sons [01121] that shall issue [03318] from thee, which thou shalt beget [03205], shall they take away [03947]; and they shall be eunuchs [05631] in the palace [01964] of the king [04428] of Babylon [0894].
19 The living [02416], the living [02416], he shall praise [03034] thee, as I do this day [03117]: the father [01] to the children [01121] shall make known [03045] thy truth [0571].
4 Be thou ashamed [0954], O Zidon [06721]: for the sea [03220] hath spoken [0559], even the strength [04581] of the sea [03220], saying [0559], I travail [02342] not, nor bring forth children [03205], neither do I nourish up [01431] young men [0970], nor bring up [07311] virgins [01330].
18 For the grave [07585] cannot praise [03034] thee, death [04194] can not celebrate [01984] thee: they that go down [03381] into the pit [0953] cannot hope [07663] for thy truth [0571].
10 Whatsoever thy hand [03027] findeth [04672] to do [06213], do [06213] it with thy might [03581]; for there is no work [04639], nor device [02808], nor knowledge [01847], nor wisdom [02451], in the grave [07585], whither thou goest [01980].
4 For [04310] to him that is [03426] joined [02266] [0977] to all the living [02416] there is hope [0986]: for a living [02416] dog [03611] is better [02896] than a dead [04191] lion [0738].
5 For the living [02416] know [03045] that they shall die [04191]: but the dead [04191] know [03045] not any thing [03972], neither have they any more a reward [07939]; for the memory [02143] of them is forgotten [07911].
17 The dead [04191] praise [01984] not the LORD [03050], neither any that go down [03381] into silence [01745].
12 Shall thy wonders [06382] be known [03045] in the dark [02822]? and thy righteousness [06666] in the land [0776] of forgetfulness [05388]?
13 But unto thee have I cried [07768], O LORD [03068]; and in the morning [01242] shall my prayer [08605] prevent [06923] thee.
10 Hear [08085], O LORD [03068], and have mercy [02603] upon me: LORD [03068], be thou my helper [05826].
6 I am weary [03021] with my groaning [0585]; all the night [03915] make I my bed [04296] to swim [07811]; I water [04529] my couch [06210] with my tears [01832].
