Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
God saith to the sinner, "Wash you," &c., that he, finding his inability to "make" himself "clean," may cry to God, Wash me, cleanse me (Psa 51:2, Psa 51:7, Psa 51:10).
before mine eyes--not mere outward reformation before man's eyes, who cannot, as God, see into the heart (Jer 32:19). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Wash you - This is, of course, to be understood in a moral sense; meaning that they should put away their sins. Sin is represented in the Scriptures as defiling or polluting the soul Eze 20:31; Eze 23:30; Hos 5:8; Hos 9:4; and the removal of it is represented by the act of washing; Psa 51:2 : 'Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin;' Jer 4:14 : 'O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved;' Job 9:30; Co1 6:11; Heb 10:22; Pe2 2:22; Rev 1:5; Rev 7:14. It is used here in close connection with the previous verse, where the prophet says that their hands were flied with blood. He now admonishes them to wash away that blood, with the implied understanding, that then their prayers would be heard. It is worthy of remark, also, that the prophet directs them to do this themselves. He addresses them as moral agents, and as having ability to do it. This is the uniform manner in which God addresses sinners in the Bible, requiring them to put away their sins, and to make themselves a new heart. Compare Eze 18:31-32.
The evil of your doings - This is a Hebraism, to denote your evil doings.
From before mine eyes - As God is omniscient, to put them away from before his eyes, is to put them away altogether. To pardon or forgive sin, is often expressed by hiding it; Psa 51:9 :
Hide thy face from my sins.
Cease to do evil - Compare Pe1 3:10-11. The prophet is specifying what was necessary in order that their prayers might be heard, and that they might find acceptance with God. What he states here is a universal truth. If sinners wish to find acceptance with God, they must come renouncing all sin; resolving to put away everything that God hates, however dear it may be to the heart. Compare Mar 9:43-47. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
The first three run thus: "Wash, clean yourselves; put away the badness of your doings from the range of my eyes; cease to do evil." This is not only an advance from figurative language to the most literal, but there is also an advance in what is said. The first admonition requires, primarily and above all, purification from the sins committed, by means of forgiveness sought for and obtained. Wash: rachatzu, from râchatz, in the frequent middle sense of washing one's self. Clean yourselves: hizdaccu, with the tone upon the last syllable, is not the niphal of zâkak, as the first plur. imper. niph. of such verbs has generally and naturally the tone upon the penultimate (see Isa 52:11; Num 17:10), but the hithpael of zacah for hizdaccu, with the preformative Tav resolved into the first radical letter, as is very common in the hithpael (Ges. 54, 2, b). According to the difference between the two synonyms (to wash one's self, to clean one's self), the former must be understood as referring to the one great act of repentance on the part of a man who is turning to God, the latter to the daily repentance of one who has so turned. The second admonition requires them to place themselves in the light of the divine countenance, and put away the evil of their doings, which was intolerable to pure eyes (Hab 1:13). They were to wrestle against the wickedness to which their actual sin had grown, until at length it entirely disappeared. Neged, according to its radical meaning, signifies prominence (compare the Arabic ne‛gd, high land which is visible at a great distance), conspicuousness, so that minneged is really equivalent to ex apparentia. |

19 Great [01419] in counsel [06098], and mighty [07227] in work [05950]: for thine eyes [05869] are open [06491] upon all the ways [01870] of the sons [01121] of men [0120]: to give [05414] every one [0376] according to his ways [01870], and according to the fruit [06529] of his doings [04611]:
10 Create [01254] in me a clean [02889] heart [03820], O God [0430]; and renew [02318] a right [03559] spirit [07307] within [07130] me.
7 Purge [02398] me with hyssop [0231], and I shall be clean [02891]: wash [03526] me, and I shall be whiter [03835] than snow [07950].
2 Wash [03526] me throughly [07235] from mine iniquity [05771], and cleanse [02891] me from my sin [02403].
43 And [2532] if [1437] thy [4675] hand [5495] offend [4624] thee [4571], cut [609] it [846] off [609]: it is [2076] better [2570] for thee [4671] to enter [1525] into [1519] life [2222] maimed [2948], than [2228] having [2192] two [1417] hands [5495] to go [565] into [1519] hell [1067], into [1519] the fire [4442] that never shall be quenched [762]:
44 Where [3699] their [846] worm [4663] dieth [5053] not [3756], and [2532] the fire [4442] is [4570] not [3756] quenched [4570].
45 And [2532] if [1437] thy [4675] foot [4228] offend [4624] thee [4571], cut [609] it [846] off [609]: it is [2076] better [2570] for thee [4671] to enter [1525] halt [5560] into [1519] life [2222], than [2228] having [2192] two [1417] feet [4228] to be cast [906] into [1519] hell [1067], into [1519] the fire [4442] that never shall be quenched [762]:
46 Where [3699] their [846] worm [4663] dieth [5053] not [3756], and [2532] the fire [4442] is [4570] not [3756] quenched [4570].
47 And [2532] if [1437] thine [4675] eye [3788] offend [4624] thee [4571], pluck [1544] it [846] out [1544]: it is [2076] better [2570] for thee [4671] to enter [1525] into [1519] the kingdom [932] of God [2316] with one eye [3442], than [2228] having [2192] two [1417] eyes [3788] to be cast [906] into [1519] hell [1067] fire [4442]:
10 For [1063] he that will [2309] love [25] life [2222], and [2532] see [1492] good [18] days [2250], let him refrain [3973] his [846] tongue [1100] from [575] evil [2556], and [2532] his [846] lips [5491] that they speak [2980] no [3361] guile [1388]:
11 Let him eschew [1578] [575] evil [2556], and [2532] do [4160] good [18]; let him seek [2212] peace [1515], and [2532] ensue [1377] it [846].
9 Hide [05641] thy face [06440] from my sins [02399], and blot out [04229] all mine iniquities [05771].
31 Cast away [07993] from you all your transgressions [06588], whereby ye have transgressed [06586]; and make [06213] you a new [02319] heart [03820] and a new [02319] spirit [07307]: for why will ye die [04191], O house [01004] of Israel [03478]?
32 For I have no pleasure [02654] in the death [04194] of him that dieth [04191], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]: wherefore turn [07725] yourselves, and live [02421] ye.
14 And [2532] I said [2046] unto him [846], Sir [2962], thou [4771] knowest [1492]. And [2532] he said [2036] to me [3427], These [3778] are they [1526] which came [2064] out of [1537] great [3173] tribulation [2347], and [2532] have washed [4150] their [846] robes [4749], and [2532] made [3021] them [4749] [846] white [3021] in [1722] the blood [129] of the Lamb [721].
5 And [2532] from [575] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], who is the faithful [4103] witness [3144], and the first begotten [4416] of [1537] the dead [3498], and [2532] the prince [758] of the kings [935] of the earth [1093]. Unto him that loved [25] us [2248], and [2532] washed [3068] us [2248] from [575] our [2257] sins [266] in [1722] his own [846] blood [129],
22 But [1161] it is happened [4819] unto them [846] according to [3588] the true [227] proverb [3942], The dog [2965] is turned [1994] to [1909] his own [2398] vomit [1829] again [1994]; and [2532] the sow [5300] that was washed [3068] to [1519] her wallowing [2946] in the mire [1004].
22 Let us draw near [4334] with [3326] a true [228] heart [2588] in [1722] full assurance [4136] of faith [4102], having [4472] our hearts [2588] sprinkled [4472] from [575] an evil [4190] conscience [4893], and [2532] our bodies [4983] washed [3068] with pure [2513] water [5204].
11 And [2532] such [5023] were [2258] some of you [5100]: but [235] ye are washed [628], but [235] ye are sanctified [37], but [235] ye are justified [1344] in [1722] the name [3686] of the Lord [2962] Jesus [2424], and [2532] by [1722] the Spirit [4151] of our [2257] God [2316].
30 If I wash [07364] myself with [07950] snow water [04325] [01119], and make my hands [03709] never [01252] [01253] so clean [02141];
14 O Jerusalem [03389], wash [03526] thine heart [03820] from wickedness [07451], that thou mayest be saved [03467]. How long shall thy vain [0205] thoughts [04284] lodge [03885] within [07130] thee?
2 Wash [03526] me throughly [07235] from mine iniquity [05771], and cleanse [02891] me from my sin [02403].
4 They shall not offer [05258] wine [03196] offerings to the LORD [03068], neither shall they be pleasing [06149] unto him: their sacrifices [02077] shall be unto them as the bread [03899] of mourners [0205]; all that eat [0398] thereof shall be polluted [02930]: for their bread [03899] for their soul [05315] shall not come [0935] into the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
8 Blow [08628] ye the cornet [07782] in Gibeah [01390], and the trumpet [02689] in Ramah [07414]: cry aloud [07321] at Bethaven [01007], after [0310] thee, O Benjamin [01144].
30 I will do [06213] these things unto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring [02181] after [0310] the heathen [01471], and because thou art polluted [02930] with their idols [01544].
31 For when ye offer [05375] your gifts [04979], when ye make your sons [01121] to pass through [05674] the fire [0784], ye pollute [02930] yourselves with all your idols [01544], even unto this day [03117]: and shall I be enquired [01875] of by you, O house [01004] of Israel [03478]? As I live [02416], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], I will not be enquired [01875] of by you.
13 Thou art of purer [02889] eyes [05869] than to behold [07200] evil [07451], and canst [03201] not look [05027] on iniquity [05999]: wherefore lookest [05027] thou upon them that deal treacherously [0898], and holdest thy tongue [02790] when the wicked [07563] devoureth [01104] the man that is more righteous [06662] than he?
10 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Bring [07725] Aaron's [0175] rod [04294] again [07725] before [06440] the testimony [05715], to be kept [04931] for a token [0226] against the rebels [04805] [01121]; and thou shalt quite take away [03615] their murmurings [08519] from me, that they die [04191] not.
11 Depart [05493] ye, depart [05493] ye, go ye out [03318] from thence, touch [05060] no unclean [02931] thing; go ye out [03318] of the midst [08432] of her; be ye clean [01305], that bear [05375] the vessels [03627] of the LORD [03068].
47 And he that lieth [07901] in the house [01004] shall wash [03526] his clothes [0899]; and he that eateth [0398] in the house [01004] shall wash [03526] his clothes [0899].
9 But it shall be on the seventh [07637] day [03117], that he shall shave [01548] all his hair [08181] off his head [07218] and his beard [02206] and his eyebrows [01354] [05869], even all his hair [08181] he shall shave [01548] off: and he shall wash [03526] his clothes [0899], also he shall wash [07364] his flesh [01320] in water [04325], and he shall be clean [02891].
8 And he that is to be cleansed [02891] shall wash [03526] his clothes [0899], and shave [01548] off all his hair [08181], and wash [07364] himself in water [04325], that he may be clean [02891]: and after [0310] that he shall come [0935] into the camp [04264], and shall tarry [03427] abroad [02351] out of his tent [0168] seven [07651] days [03117].
