Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
I have given with him Aholiab--He belonged to the tribe of Dan, one of the least influential and honorable in Israel; and here, too, we can trace the evidence of wise and paternal design, in choosing the colleague or assistant of Bezaleel from an inferior tribe (compare Co1 12:14-25; also Mar 6:7).
all that are wise-hearted I have put wisdom--At that period, when one spirit pervaded all Israel, it was not the man full of heavenly genius who presided over the work; but all who contributed their skill, experience, and labor, in rendering the smallest assistance, showed their piety and devotedness to the divine service. In like manner, it was at the commencement of the Christian Church (Act 6:5; Act 18:2). |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
There were associated with Bezaleel as assistants, Oholiab, the son of Achisamach, of the tribe of Dan, and other men endowed with understanding, whom God had filled with wisdom for the execution of His work. According to Exo 38:23, Oholiab was both faber, a master in metal, stone, and wood work, and also an artistic weaver of colours. In Exo 38:7-11, the words to be executed, which have been minutely described in ch. 24-30, are mentioned singly once more; and, in addition to these, we find in Exo 31:10 השּׂרד בּגדי mentioned, along with, or rather before, the holy dress of Aaron. This is the case also in Exo 35:19 and Exo 39:41, where there is also the additional clause, "to serve (שׁרת ministrare) in the sanctuary." They were composed, according to Exo 39:1, of blue and red purple, and crimson. The meaning of the word serad, which only occurs in these passages, is quite uncertain. The Rabbins understand by the bigde hasserad the wrappers in which the vessels of the sanctuary were enclosed when the camp was broken up, as these are called begadim of blue and red purple, and crimson, in Num 4:6. But this rendering is opposed to the words which follow, and which indicate their use in the holy service, i.e., in the performance of worship, and therefore are quite inapplicable to the wrappers referred to. There is even less ground for referring them, as Gesenius and others do, to the inner curtains of the tabernacle, or the inner hangings of the dwelling-place. For, apart from the uncertainty of the rendering given to serad, viz., netted cloth, filet, it is overthrown by the fact that these curtains of the dwelling-place were not of net-work; and still more decisively by the order in which the bigde hasserad occur in Exo 39:41, viz., not till the dwelling-place and tent, and everything belonging to them, have been mentioned, even down to the hangings of the court and the pegs of the tent, and all that remains to be noticed is the clothing of the priests. From the definition "to serve in the sanctuary," it is obvious that the bigde serad were clothes used in the worship, στολαὶ λειτουργικαί, as the lxx have rendered it in agreement with the rest of the ancient versions-that they were, in fact, the rich robes which constituted the official dress of the high priest, whilst "the holy garments for Aaron" were the holy clothes which were worn by him in common with the priests. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
In the hearts of all that are wisehearted I have put wisdom - So every man that had a natural genius, as we term it, had an increase of wisdom by immediate inspiration from God, so that he knew how to execute the different works which Divine wisdom designed for the tabernacle and its furniture. Dark as were the heathens, yet they acknowledged that all talents, and the seeds of all arts, came from God. Hence Seneca: Insita nobis omnium artium semina, magisterque ex occulto Deus producit ingenia. In the same way Homer attributes such curious arts to Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, and Vulcan, the god of handicrafts.
Odyss., 1. vi., ver. 232.
As by some artist, to whom Vulcan gives
His skill divine, a breathing statue lives;
By Pallas taught, he frames the wondrous mould,
And o'er the silver pours the fusile gold.
- Pope.
And all this the wisest of men long before them declared; when speaking of the wisdom of God he says, I, Wisdom, dwell with Prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions; Pro 8:12. See Clarke's note on Exo 28:3, to which the reader is particularly desired to refer. There is something remarkable in the name of this second superintendent, אהליאב Aholiab, the tabernacle of the father, or, the father is my tabernacle; a name nearly similar in its meaning to that of Bezaleel, see Clarke's note on Exo 31:2. |
2 And [2532] found [2147] a certain [5100] Jew [2453] named [3686] Aquila [207], born [1085] in Pontus [4193], lately [4373] come [2064] from [575] Italy [2482], with [2532] his [846] wife [1135] Priscilla [4252]; (because that [1223] Claudius [2804] had commanded [1299] all [3956] Jews [2453] to depart [5563] from [1537] Rome [4516]:) and came [4334] unto them [846].
5 And [2532] the saying [3056] pleased [700] [1799] the whole [3956] multitude [4128]: and [2532] they chose [1586] Stephen [4736], a man [435] full [4134] of faith [4102] and [2532] of the Holy [40] Ghost [4151], and [2532] Philip [5376], and [2532] Prochorus [4402], and [2532] Nicanor [3527], and [2532] Timon [5096], and [2532] Parmenas [3937], and [2532] Nicolas [3532] a proselyte [4339] of Antioch [491]:
7 And [2532] he called [4341] unto him the twelve [1427], and [2532] began [756] to send [649] them [846] forth [649] by two [1417] and two [1417]; and [2532] gave [1325] them [846] power over [1849] unclean [169] spirits [4151];
14 [2532] For [1063] the body [4983] is [2076] not [3756] one [1520] member [3196], but [235] many [4183].
15 If [1437] the foot [4228] shall say [2036], Because [3754] I am [1510] not [3756] the hand [5495], I am [1510] not [3756] of [1537] the body [4983]; is [2076] it therefore [3756] [3844] [5124] not [3756] of [1537] the body [4983]?
16 And [2532] if [1437] the ear [3775] shall say [2036], Because [3754] I am [1510] not [3756] the eye [3788], I am [1510] not [3756] of [1537] the body [4983]; is [2076] it therefore [3756] [3844] [5124] not [3756] of [1537] the body [4983]?
17 If [1487] the whole [3650] body [4983] were an eye [3788], where [4226] were the hearing [189]? If [1487] the whole [3650] were hearing [189], where [4226] were the smelling [3750]?
18 But [1161] now [3570] hath [5087] God [2316] set [5087] the members [3196] every [1538] one [1520] of them [846] in [1722] the body [4983], as [2531] it hath pleased him [2309].
19 And [1161] if [1487] they were [2258] all [3956] one [1520] member [3196], where [4226] were the body [4983]?
20 But [1161] now [3568] [3303] are they many [4183] members [3196], yet but [1161] one [1520] body [4983].
21 And [1161] the eye [3788] cannot [3756] [1410] say [2036] unto the hand [5495], I have [2192] no [3756] need [5532] of thee [4675]: nor [2228] again [3825] the head [2776] to the feet [4228], I have [2192] no [3756] need [5532] of you [5216].
22 Nay [235], much [4183] more [3123] those members [3196] of the body [4983], which seem [1380] to be [5225] more feeble [772], are [2076] necessary [316]:
23 And [2532] those [3739] members of the body [4983], which we think [1380] to be [1511] less honourable [820], upon these [5125] we bestow [4060] more abundant [4055] honour [5092]; and [2532] our [2257] uncomely [809] parts have [2192] more abundant [4055] comeliness [2157].
24 For [1161] our [2257] comely [2158] parts have [2192] no [3756] need [5532]: but [235] God [2316] hath tempered [4786] the body [4983] together [4786], having given [1325] more abundant [4055] honour [5092] to that part which lacked [5302]:
25 That [3363] there should be [5600] no [3363] schism [4978] in [1722] the body [4983]; but [235] that the members [3196] should have [3309] the same [846] care [3309] one for [5228] another [240].
41 The cloths [0899] of service [08278] to do service [08334] in the holy [06944] place, and the holy [06944] garments [0899] for Aaron [0175] the priest [03548], and his sons [01121]' garments [0899], to minister in the priest's office [03547].
6 And shall put [05414] thereon the covering [03681] of badgers [08476]' skins [05785], and shall spread [06566] over [04605] it a cloth [0899] wholly [03632] of blue [08504], and shall put [07760] in the staves [0905] thereof.
1 And of the blue [08504], and purple [0713], and scarlet [08144] [08438], they made [06213] cloths [0899] of service [08278], to do service [08334] in the holy [06944] place, and made [06213] the holy [06944] garments [0899] for Aaron [0175]; as the LORD [03068] commanded [06680] Moses [04872].
41 The cloths [0899] of service [08278] to do service [08334] in the holy [06944] place, and the holy [06944] garments [0899] for Aaron [0175] the priest [03548], and his sons [01121]' garments [0899], to minister in the priest's office [03547].
19 The cloths [0899] of service [08278], to do service [08334] in the holy [06944] place, the holy [06944] garments [0899] for Aaron [0175] the priest [03548], and the garments [0899] of his sons [01121], to minister in the priest's office [03547].
10 And the cloths [0899] of service [08278], and the holy [06944] garments [0899] for Aaron [0175] the priest [03548], and the garments [0899] of his sons [01121], to minister in the priest's office [03547],
7 And he put [0935] the staves [0905] into the rings [02885] on the sides [06763] of the altar [04196], to bear [05375] it withal; he made [06213] the altar hollow [05014] with boards [03871].
8 And he made [06213] the laver [03595] of brass [05178], and the foot [03653] of it of brass [05178], of the lookingglasses [04759] of the women assembling [06633], which assembled [06633] at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150].
9 And he made [06213] the court [02691]: on the south [05045] side [06285] southward [08486] the hangings [07050] of the court [02691] were of fine twined [07806] linen [08336], an hundred [03967] cubits [0520]:
10 Their pillars [05982] were twenty [06242], and their brasen [05178] sockets [0134] twenty [06242]; the hooks [02053] of the pillars [05982] and their fillets [02838] were of silver [03701].
11 And for the north [06828] side [06285] the hangings were an hundred [03967] cubits [0520], their pillars [05982] were twenty [06242], and their sockets [0134] of brass [05178] twenty [06242]; the hooks [02053] of the pillars [05982] and their fillets [02838] of silver [03701].
23 And with him was Aholiab [0171], son [01121] of Ahisamach [0294], of the tribe [04294] of Dan [01835], an engraver [02796], and a cunning workman [02803], and an embroiderer [07551] in blue [08504], and in purple [0713], and in scarlet [08144] [08438], and fine linen [08336].
2 See [07200], I have called [07121] by name [08034] Bezaleel [01212] the son [01121] of Uri [0221], the son [01121] of Hur [02354], of the tribe [04294] of Judah [03063]:
3 And thou shalt speak [01696] unto all that are wise [02450] hearted [03820], whom I have filled [04390] with the spirit [07307] of wisdom [02451], that they may make [06213] Aaron's [0175] garments [0899] to consecrate [06942] him, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office [03547].
12 I wisdom [02451] dwell [07931] with prudence [06195], and find out [04672] knowledge [01847] of witty inventions [04209].
