A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
Moses stretched out his hand, &c.--The waving of the rod was of great importance on this occasion to give public attestation in the presence of the assembled Israelites, both to the character of Moses and the divine mission with which he was charged.

the Lord caused . . . a strong east wind all that night--Suppose a mere ebb tide caused by the wind, raising the water to a great height on one side, still as there was not only "dry land," but, according to the tenor of the sacred narrative, a wall on the right hand and on the left [Exo 14:22], it would be impossible on the hypothesis of such a natural cause to rear the wall on the other. The idea of divine interposition, therefore, is imperative; and, assuming the passage to have been made at Mount Attakah, or at the mouth of Wady Tawarik, an east wind would cut the sea in that line. The Hebrew word kedem, however, rendered in our translation, "east," means, in its primary signification, previous; so that this verse might, perhaps, be rendered, "the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong previous wind all that night"; a rendering which would remove the difficulty of supposing the host of Israel marched over on the sand, in the teeth of a rushing column of wind, strong enough to heap up the waters as a wall on each side of a dry path, and give the intelligible narrative of divine interference.

8 And with the blast [07307] of thy nostrils [0639] the waters [04325] were gathered together [06192], the floods [05140] stood upright [05324] as an heap [05067], and the depths [08415] were congealed [07087] in the heart [03820] of the sea [03220].
18 And they tempted [05254] God [0410] in their heart [03824] by asking [07592] meat [0400] for their lust [05315].

24 And it came to pass, that in the morning [01242] watch [0821] the LORD [03068] looked [08259] unto the host [04264] of the Egyptians [04714] through the pillar [05982] of fire [0784] and of the cloud [06051], and troubled [02000] the host [04264] of the Egyptians [04714],
27 And Moses [04872] stretched forth [05186] his hand [03027] over the sea [03220], and the sea [03220] returned [07725] to his strength [0386] when the morning [01242] appeared [06437]; and the Egyptians [04714] fled [05127] against [07125] it; and the LORD [03068] overthrew [05287] the Egyptians [04714] in the midst [08432] of the sea [03220].

1 And God [0430] remembered [02142] Noah [05146], and every living thing [02416], and all the cattle [0929] that was with him in the ark [08392]: and God [0430] made [05674] a wind [07307] to pass [05674] over [05921] the earth [0776], and the waters [04325] asswaged [07918];
