A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
Chief of the works of God; so "ways" (Job 26:14; Pro 8:22).

can make his sword to approach--rather, "has furnished him with his sword" (harpe), namely, the sickle-like teeth with which he cuts down grain. English Version, however, is literally right.

22 The LORD [03068] possessed [07069] me in the beginning [07225] of his way [01870], before [06924] his works [04659] of old.
14 Lo, these are parts [07098] of his ways [01870]: but how little [08102] a portion [01697] is heard [08085] of him? but the thunder [07482] of his power [01369] who can understand [0995]?
20 And when he looked [07200] on Amalek [06002], he took up [05375] his parable [04912], and said [0559], Amalek [06002] was the first [07225] of the nations [01471]; but his latter [0319] end shall be that he perish [08] for ever [05703].
4 The nations [01471] also heard [08085] of him; he was taken [08610] in their pit [07845], and they brought [0935] him with chains [02397] unto the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
29 Because thy rage [07264] against me, and thy tumult [07600], is come up [05927] into mine ears [0241], therefore will I put [07760] my hook [02397] in thy nose [0639], and my bridle [04964] in thy lips [08193], and I will turn thee back [07725] by the way [01870] by which thou camest [0935].
17 Surely in vain [02600] the net [07568] is spread [02219] in the sight [05869] of any bird [01167] [03671].
24 He taketh [03947] it with his eyes [05869]: his nose [0639] pierceth through [05344] snares [04170].
23 Behold, he drinketh up [06231] a river [05104], and hasteth [02648] not: he trusteth [0982] that he can draw up [01518] Jordan [03383] into his mouth [06310].
15 Behold, they shall surely [01481] gather together [01481], but not [0657] by me: whosoever [04310] shall gather together [01481] against thee shall fall [05307] for thy sake.
8 Behold, I go [01980] forward [06924], but he is not there; and backward [0268], but I cannot perceive [0995] him:
14 Behold, he breaketh down [02040], and it cannot be built again [01129]: he shutteth up [05462] a man [0376], and there can be no opening [06605].
23 Behold, he drinketh up [06231] a river [05104], and hasteth [02648] not: he trusteth [0982] that he can draw up [01518] Jordan [03383] into his mouth [06310].
22 The shady trees [06628] cover [05526] him with their shadow [06752]; the willows [06155] of the brook [05158] compass him about [05437].
28 Hath [03426] the rain [04306] a father [01]? or who hath begotten [03205] the drops [096] of dew [02919]?
7 Yet he shall perish [06] for ever [05331] like his own dung [01561]: they which have seen [07200] him shall say [0559], Where [0335] is he?
22 The shady trees [06628] cover [05526] him with their shadow [06752]; the willows [06155] of the brook [05158] compass him about [05437].
21 He lieth [07901] under the shady trees [06628], in the covert [05643] of the reed [07070], and fens [01207].
22 The shady trees [06628] cover [05526] him with their shadow [06752]; the willows [06155] of the brook [05158] compass him about [05437].
21 He lieth [07901] under the shady trees [06628], in the covert [05643] of the reed [07070], and fens [01207].
20 Surely the mountains [02022] bring him forth [05375] food [0944], where all the beasts [02416] of the field [07704] play [07832].
24 The oxen [0504] likewise and the young asses [05895] that ear [05647] the ground [0127] shall eat [0398] clean [02548] provender [01098], which hath been winnowed [02219] with the shovel [07371] and with the fan [04214].
21 So he brought [0935] him into his house [01004], and gave provender [01101] unto the asses [02543]: and they washed [07364] their feet [07272], and did eat [0398] and drink [08354].
6 They reap [07114] [07114] every one his corn [01098] in the field [07704]: and they gather [03953] the vintage [03754] of the wicked [07563].
5 Doth the wild ass [06501] bray [05101] when he hath grass [01877]? or loweth [01600] the ox [07794] over his fodder [01098]?
6 That drink [08354] wine [03196] in bowls [04219], and anoint [04886] themselves with the chief [07225] ointments [08081]: but they are not grieved [02470] for the affliction [07667] of Joseph [03130].
1 Woe [01945] to them that are at ease [07600] in Zion [06726], and trust [0982] in the mountain [02022] of Samaria [08111], which are named [05344] chief [07225] of the nations [01471], to whom the house [01004] of Israel [03478] came [0935] !
20 And when he looked [07200] on Amalek [06002], he took up [05375] his parable [04912], and said [0559], Amalek [06002] was the first [07225] of the nations [01471]; but his latter [0319] end shall be that he perish [08] for ever [05703].
19 He is the chief [07225] of the ways [01870] of God [0410]: he that made [06213] him can make [05066] his sword [02719] to approach [05066] unto him.
