A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall--or, "double wall," extending from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits in length, formerly broken down by Joash, king of Israel [Ch2 25:23], but afterwards rebuilt by Uzziah [Ch2 26:9], who made it so strong that the Chaldeans, finding it difficult to demolish, had left it standing. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Fortified - It is not said, they repaired, but they fortified it, either because this part of the wall was less demolished than the other, and therefore they needed not to repair it, but only to make it stronger: or, to note their extraordinary care and diligence, that they would not only repair it, but make it stronger than ever. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Goldsmiths - From the remotest period of the history of the Jews they had artists in all elegant and ornamental trades; and it is also evident that goldsmiths, apothecaries, and merchants were formed into companies in the time of Nehemiah.
Apothecaries - Rather such as dealt in drugs, aromatics, spices, etc., for embalming, or for furnishing the temple with the incense consumed there. |
9 Moreover Uzziah [05818] built [01129] towers [04026] in Jerusalem [03389] at the corner [06438] gate [08179], and at the valley [01516] gate [08179], and at the turning [04740] of the wall, and fortified [02388] them.
23 And Joash [03101] the king [04428] of Israel [03478] took [08610] Amaziah [0558] king [04428] of Judah [03063], the son [01121] of Joash [03101], the son [01121] of Jehoahaz [03059], at Bethshemesh [01053], and brought [0935] him to Jerusalem [03389], and brake down [06555] the wall [02346] of Jerusalem [03389] from the gate [08179] of Ephraim [0669] to the corner [06437] gate [08179], four [0702] hundred [03967] cubits [0520].
