Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
the priests and the Levites were ashamed--Though the Levites are associated in this statement, the priests were principally referred to; those of them who had been dilatory or negligent in sanctifying themselves (Ch2 29:34) were put to the blush and stimulated to their duty by the greater alacrity and zeal of the people. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The laggart priests and Levites, who from want of zeal for the Yahweh-worship, or from actual inclination to idolatry, had neglected to purify themselves (Ch2 30:3 and marginal reference), were now shamed by the general ardor, and sanctified themselves for the Paschal festival.
And brought in the burnt offerings - Received them, i. e. from the offerers at the doors of the inner court, and took them up to the brass altar in front of the porch. No part of the burnt offerings was ever taken inside the temple building. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Ashamed - Their negligence and remissness being upbraided by the general forwardness of the people. The zeal which we observe in others, should make us ashamed of our own coldness, and quicken us not only to do our duty, but to do it with our might. |
34 But the priests [03548] were too few [04592], so that they could [03201] not flay [06584] all the burnt offerings [05930]: wherefore their brethren [0251] the Levites [03881] did help [02388] them, till the work [04399] was ended [03615], and until the other priests [03548] had sanctified [06942] themselves: for the Levites [03881] were more upright [03477] in heart [03824] to sanctify [06942] themselves than the priests [03548].
3 For they could [03201] not keep [06213] it at that time [06256], because the priests [03548] had not sanctified [06942] themselves sufficiently [04078] [01767], neither had the people [05971] gathered themselves together [0622] to Jerusalem [03389].
