ATHALIAH SLAIN. (Ch2 23:12-15)
Athaliah heard the noise of the people--The unusual commotion, indicated by the blast of the trumpets and the vehement acclamations of the people, drew her attention, or excited her fears. She might have flattered herself that, having slain all the royal family, she was in perfect security; but it is just as likely that, finding on reflection, one had escaped her murderous hands, she might not deem it expedient to institute any enquiries; but the very idea would keep her constantly in a state of jealous suspicion and irritation. In that state of mind, the wicked usurper, hearing across the TyropÅon the outburst of popular joy, rushed across the bridge to the temple grounds, and, penetrating from a single glance the meaning of the whole scene, raised a shriek of "Treason!" |

Slaughter of Athaliah, as in Kg2 11:13-16. In Ch2 23:13 of the Chronicle, the statement that the assembled people played on instruments is expanded by the addition, "and singing with instruments of song, and proclaiming aloud to praise," i.e., and praising. ויּוצא, Ch2 23:14, is an orthographical error for ויצו (Kings). |
12 Now when Athaliah [06271] heard [08085] the noise [06963] of the people [05971] running [07323] and praising [01984] the king [04428], she came [0935] to the people [05971] into the house [01004] of the LORD [03068]:
13 And she looked [07200], and, behold, the king [04428] stood [05975] at his pillar [05982] at the entering in [03996], and the princes [08269] and the trumpets [02689] by the king [04428]: and all the people [05971] of the land [0776] rejoiced [08056], and sounded [08628] with trumpets [02689], also the singers [07891] with instruments [03627] of musick [07892], and such as taught [03045] to sing praise [01984]. Then Athaliah [06271] rent [07167] her clothes [0899], and said [0559], Treason [07195], Treason [07195].
14 Then Jehoiada [03077] the priest [03548] brought out [03318] the captains [08269] of hundreds [03967] that were set over [06485] the host [02428], and said [0559] unto them, Have her forth [03318] of the ranges [01004] [07713]: and whoso followeth [0935] [0310] her, let him be slain [04191] with the sword [02719]. For the priest [03548] said [0559], Slay [04191] her not in the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
15 So they laid [07760] hands [03027] on her; and when she was come [0935] to the entering [03996] of the horse [05483] gate [08179] by the king's [04428] house [01004], they slew [04191] her there.
13 And when Athaliah [06271] heard [08085] the noise [06963] of the guard [07323] and of the people [05971], she came [0935] to the people [05971] into the temple [01004] of the LORD [03068].
14 And when she looked [07200], behold, the king [04428] stood [05975] by a pillar [05982], as the manner [04941] was, and the princes [08269] and the trumpeters [02689] by the king [04428], and all the people [05971] of the land [0776] rejoiced [08056], and blew [08628] with trumpets [02689]: and Athaliah [06271] rent [07167] her clothes [0899], and cried [07121], Treason [07195], Treason [07195].
15 But Jehoiada [03077] the priest [03548] commanded [06680] the captains [08269] of the hundreds [03967], the officers [06485] of the host [02428], and said [0559] unto them, Have her forth [03318] without [01004] the ranges [07713]: and him that followeth [0935] [0310] her kill [04191] with the sword [02719]. For the priest [03548] had said [0559], Let her not be slain [04191] in the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
16 And they laid [07760] hands [03027] on her; and she went [0935] by the way [01870] by the which the horses [05483] came [03996] into the king's [04428] house [01004]: and there was she slain [04191].
