A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
he it is that executed the priest's office in the temple that Solomon built in Jerusalem--It is doubtful whether the person in favor of whom this testimony is borne be Johanan or Azariah. If the former, he is the same as Jehoiada, who rendered important public services (2Ki. 11:1-20); if the latter, it refers to the worthy and independent part he acted in resisting the unwarrantable encroachments of Uzziah (Ch2 26:17).
in the temple that Solomon built in Jerusalem--described in this particular manner to distinguish it from the second temple, which was in existence at the time when this history was written. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
The priest's office - So did all the rest, but it is implied that he did it worthily, he filled his place, and valiantly discharged his office in Uzziah's time. Solomon built - In Solomon's temple; so called to distinguish it from the second temple which was built or in building when these books were written. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Johanan - Supposed to be the same as Jehoiada.
Executed the priest's office - Probably this refers to the dignified manner in which Azariah opposed King Uzziah, who wished to invade the priest's office, and offer incense in the temple. See Ch2 26:17, Ch2 26:18. |

18 And they withstood [05975] Uzziah [05818] the king [04428], and said [0559] unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah [05818], to burn incense [06999] unto the LORD [03068], but to the priests [03548] the sons [01121] of Aaron [0175], that are consecrated [06942] to burn incense [06999]: go out [03318] of the sanctuary [04720]; for thou hast trespassed [04603]; neither shall it be for thine honour [03519] from the LORD [03068] God [0430].
