Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
Michal . . . saw . . . David dancing and playing--His movements would be slow and solemn, suitable to the grave and solemn character of the music. Though his royal robes were laid aside, he was attired like the other officials, showing a becoming humility in the immediate presence of God. The feelings manifested by Michal were only an ebullition of spleen from a proud and passionate woman. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
Ch1 16:29 and Ch1 16:1-3 agree in substance with Sa2 6:15-19, only some few words being explained: e.g., וּמשׂחק מרקּד, Ch1 15:29, instead of וּמכרכּר מפזּז (Sam.), and יהוה בּרית ארון instead of והוה ערון (Sam.); see the commentary on 2 Sam. l.c. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Michal - saw - David dancing - and she despised him - See this whole business explained Sa2 6:20 (note), etc., where David's conduct is vindicated, and the nature of Michal's disgrace and punishment hinted at, but all left to the reader's determination. |
29 And it came to pass, as the ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of the LORD [03068] came [0935] to the city [05892] of David [01732], that Michal [04324] the daughter [01323] of Saul [07586] looking out [08259] at a window [02474] saw [07200] king [04428] David [01732] dancing [07540] and playing [07832]: and she despised [0959] him in her heart [03820].
15 So David [01732] and all the house [01004] of Israel [03478] brought up [05927] the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068] with shouting [08643], and with the sound [06963] of the trumpet [07782].
16 And as the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068] came [0935] into the city [05892] of David [01732], Michal [04324] Saul's [07586] daughter [01323] looked [08259] through a window [02474], and saw [07200] king [04428] David [01732] leaping [06339] and dancing [03769] before [06440] the LORD [03068]; and she despised [0959] him in her heart [03820].
17 And they brought [0935] in the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068], and set [03322] it in his place [04725], in the midst [08432] of the tabernacle [0168] that David [01732] had pitched [05186] for it: and David [01732] offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and peace offerings [08002] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
18 And as soon as David [01732] had made an end [03615] of offering [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and peace offerings [08002], he blessed [01288] the people [05971] in the name [08034] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635].
19 And he dealt [02505] among all the people [05971], even among the whole multitude [01995] of Israel [03478], as well to the women [0802] as men [0376], to every one [0376] a [0259] cake [02471] of bread [03899], and a good piece [0829] of flesh, and a flagon [0809] of wine. So all the people [05971] departed [03212] every one [0376] to his house [01004].
1 So they brought [0935] the ark [0727] of God [0430], and set [03322] it in the midst [08432] of the tent [0168] that David [01732] had pitched [05186] for it: and they offered [07126] burnt sacrifices [05930] and peace offerings [08002] before [06440] God [0430].
2 And when David [01732] had made an end [03615] of offering [05927] the burnt offerings [05930] and the peace offerings [08002], he blessed [01288] the people [05971] in the name [08034] of the LORD [03068].
3 And he dealt [02505] to every one [0376] of Israel [03478], both man [0376] and woman [0802], to every one [0376] a loaf [03603] of bread [03899], and a good piece of flesh [0829], and a flagon [0809] of wine.
29 Give [03051] unto the LORD [03068] the glory [03519] due unto his name [08034]: bring [05375] an offering [04503], and come [0935] before [06440] him: worship [07812] the LORD [03068] in the beauty [01927] of holiness [06944].
20 Then David [01732] returned [07725] to bless [01288] his household [01004]. And Michal [04324] the daughter [01323] of Saul [07586] came out [03318] to meet [07125] David [01732], and said [0559], How glorious [03513] was the king [04428] of Israel [03478] to day [03117], who uncovered [01540] himself to day [03117] in the eyes [05869] of the handmaids [0519] of his servants [05650], as one [0259] of the vain fellows [07386] shamelessly [01540] uncovereth [01540] himself!
