cast him in the portion of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite, &c.--according to the doom pronounced by divine authority on Ahab (Kg1 21:19), but which on his repentance was deferred to be executed on his son. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Rode together after Ahab - The Assyrian sculptures make it probable that Josephus was right in interpreting this "rode side by side behind Ahab in his chariot." The Assyrian monarchs, when they go out to war, are frequently attended hy two guards, who stand behind them in the same chariot.
Burden - Compare the use of the same word in Isaiah (Isa 13:1; Isa 15:1, etc.), and in Lamentations Lam 2:14, for a denunciation of woe. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Cast him in the portion of the field - This was predicted, 1 Kings 21; and what now happened to the son of Ahab is foretold in Kg1 21:29 of that chapter. |
19 And thou shalt speak [01696] unto him, saying [0559], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Hast thou killed [07523], and also taken possession [03423]? And thou shalt speak [01696] unto him, saying [0559], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], In the place [04725] where dogs [03611] licked [03952] the blood [01818] of Naboth [05022] shall dogs [03611] lick [03952] thy blood [01818], even thine.
14 Thy prophets [05030] have seen [02372] vain [07723] and foolish things [08602] for thee: and they have not discovered [01540] thine iniquity [05771], to turn away [07725] thy captivity [07622] [07622]; but have seen [02372] for thee false [07723] burdens [04864] and causes of banishment [04065].
1 The burden [04853] of Moab [04124]. Because in the night [03915] Ar [06144] of Moab [04124] is laid waste [07703], and brought to silence [01820]; because in the night [03915] Kir [07024] of Moab [04124] is laid waste [07703], and brought to silence [01820];
1 The burden [04853] of Babylon [0894], which Isaiah [03470] the son [01121] of Amoz [0531] did see [02372].
29 Seest [07200] thou how Ahab [0256] humbleth [03665] himself before [06440] me? because [03282] he humbleth [03665] himself before [06440] me, I will not bring [0935] the evil [07451] in his days [03117]: but in his son's [01121] days [03117] will I bring [0935] the evil [07451] upon his house [01004].
