A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
AHAZIAH'S JUDGMENT BY ELIJAH. (Kg2 1:2-8)

Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber--This lattice was either a part of the wooden parapet, or fence, which surrounds the flat roofs of houses, and over which the king was carelessly leaning when it gave way; or it might be an opening like a skylight in the roof itself, done over with lattice-work, which, being slender or rotten, the king stepped on and slipped through. This latter supposition is most probably the true one, as Ahaziah did not fall either into the street or the court, but "in his upper chamber."

inquire of Baalzebub--Anxious to learn whether he should recover from the effects of this severe fall, he sent to consult Baalzebub, that is, the god of flies, who was considered the patron deity of medicine. A temple to that idol was erected at Ekron, which was resorted to far and wide, though it afterwards led to the destruction of the place (Zac 9:5; Amo 1:8; Zep 2:4). "After visiting Ekron, 'the god of flies' is a name that gives me no surprise. The flies there swarmed, in fact so innumerably, that I could hardly get any food without these troublesome insects getting into it" [VAN DE VELDE].

4 For Gaza [05804] shall be forsaken [05800], and Ashkelon [0831] a desolation [08077]: they shall drive out [01644] Ashdod [0795] at the noon day [06672], and Ekron [06138] shall be rooted up [06131].
8 And I will cut off [03772] the inhabitant [03427] from Ashdod [0795], and him that holdeth [08551] the sceptre [07626] from Ashkelon [0831], and I will turn [07725] mine hand [03027] against Ekron [06138]: and the remnant [07611] of the Philistines [06430] shall perish [06], saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069].
5 Ashkelon [0831] shall see [07200] it, and fear [03372]; Gaza [05804] also shall see it, and be very [03966] sorrowful [02342], and Ekron [06138]; for her expectation [04007] shall be ashamed [03001]; and the king [04428] shall perish [06] from Gaza [05804], and Ashkelon [0831] shall not be inhabited [03427].
2 And Ahaziah [0274] fell down [05307] through a lattice [07639] in his upper chamber [05944] that was in Samaria [08111], and was sick [02470]: and he sent [07971] messengers [04397], and said [0559] unto them, Go [03212], enquire [01875] of Baalzebub [01176] the god [0430] of Ekron [06138] whether I shall recover [02421] of this disease [02483].
3 But the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] said [01696] to Elijah [0452] the Tishbite [08664], Arise [06965], go up [05927] to meet [07125] the messengers [04397] of the king [04428] of Samaria [08111], and say [01696] unto them, Is it not because there is not a God [0430] in Israel [03478], that ye go [01980] to enquire [01875] of Baalzebub [01176] the god [0430] of Ekron [06138]?
4 Now therefore thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Thou shalt not come down [03381] from that bed [04296] on which thou art gone up [05927], but shalt surely [04191] die [04191]. And Elijah [0452] departed [03212].
5 And when the messengers [04397] turned back [07725] unto him, he said [0559] unto them, Why are ye now [02088] turned back [07725]?
6 And they said [0559] unto him, There came [05927] a man [0376] up [05927] to meet [07125] us, and said [0559] unto us, Go [03212], turn again [07725] unto the king [04428] that sent [07971] you, and say [01696] unto him, Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Is it not because there is not a God [0430] in Israel [03478], that thou sendest [07971] to enquire [01875] of Baalzebub [01176] the god [0430] of Ekron [06138]? therefore thou shalt not come down [03381] from that bed [04296] on which thou art gone up [05927], but shalt surely [04191] die [04191].
7 And he said [01696] unto them, What manner [04941] of man [0376] was he which came up [05927] to meet [07125] you, and told [01696] you these words [01697]?
8 And they answered [0559] him, He was an hairy [08181] man [01167] [0376], and girt [0247] with a girdle [0232] of leather [05785] about his loins [04975]. And he said [0559], It is Elijah [0452] the Tishbite [08664].
24 And the LORD [03068] did [06213] so; and there came [0935] a grievous [03515] swarm [06157] of flies into the house [01004] of Pharaoh [06547], and into his servants [05650]' houses [01004], and into all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714]: the land [0776] was corrupted [07843] by reason [06440] of the swarm [06157] of flies.
31 He spake [0559], and there came [0935] divers sorts of flies [06157], and lice [03654] in all their coasts [01366].
25 It is enough [713] for the disciple [3101] that [2443] he be [1096] as [5613] his [846] master [1320], and [2532] the servant [1401] as [5613] his [846] lord [2962]. If [1487] they have called [2564] the master of the house [3617] Beelzebub [954], how much [4214] more [3123] shall they call them of his [846] household [3615]?
