JOAB SLAIN. (1Ki. 2:28-45)

Then tidings came to Joab--The execution of these sentences respectively on Adonijah and Abiathar prepared Joab for his fate. Death, due to his great crimes (Num 35:33), would long ago have been inflicted, had not his power and popularity with the army been too formidable for the old king. He now fled to the altar, which, though a recognized asylum, afforded no sanctuary to the rebel and murderer (Exo 21:14). And, as he refused to leave it, he seems to have cherished some faint hope that a religious scruple would have been felt at the thought of violating the sanctity of the place by bloodshed. Benaiah, not liking to assume any responsibility, referred the matter to Solomon, who determined that the law should take its course (Deu 19:13).

33 So ye shall not pollute [02610] the land [0776] wherein ye are: for blood [01818] it defileth [02610] the land [0776]: and the land [0776] cannot be cleansed [03722] of the blood [01818] that is shed [08210] therein, but by the blood [01818] of him that shed [08210] it.
39 And Zadok [06659] the priest [03548], and his brethren [0251] the priests [03548], before [06440] the tabernacle [04908] of the LORD [03068] in the high place [01116] that was at Gibeon [01391],
4 And the king [04428] went [03212] to Gibeon [01391] to sacrifice [02076] there; for that [01931] was the great [01419] high place [01116]: a thousand [0505] burnt offerings [05930] did Solomon [08010] offer [05927] upon that altar [04196].
