A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
ELISHA FOLLOWS ELIJAH. (Kg1 19:19-21)

Elisha the son of Shaphat--Most probably he belonged to a family distinguished for piety, and for their opposition to the prevailing calf-worship.

ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen--indicating that he was a man of substance.

Elijah . . . cast his mantle upon him--This was an investiture with the prophetic office. It is in this way that the Brahmins, the Persian Sufis, and other priestly or sacred characters in the East are appointed--a mantle being, by some eminent priest, thrown across their shoulders. Elisha had probably been educated in the schools of the prophets.

19 So he departed [03212] thence, and found [04672] Elisha [0477] the son [01121] of Shaphat [08202], who was plowing [02790] with twelve [08147] [06240] yoke [06776] of oxen before [06440] him, and he with the twelfth [08147] [06240]: and Elijah [0452] passed [05674] by him, and cast [07993] his mantle [0155] upon him.
20 And he left [05800] the oxen [01241], and ran [07323] after [0310] Elijah [0452], and said [0559], Let me, I pray thee, kiss [05401] my father [01] and my mother [0517], and then I will follow [03212] [0310] thee. And he said [0559] unto him, Go back [03212] again [07725]: for what have I done [06213] to thee?
21 And he returned back [07725] from him [0310], and took [03947] a yoke [06776] of oxen [01241], and slew [02076] them, and boiled [01310] their flesh [01320] with the instruments [03627] of the oxen [01241], and gave [05414] unto the people [05971], and they did eat [0398]. Then he arose [06965], and went [03212] after [0310] Elijah [0452], and ministered [08334] unto him.
9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over [05674], that Elijah [0452] said [0559] unto Elisha [0477], Ask [07592] what I shall do [06213] for thee, before I be taken away [03947] from thee. And Elisha [0477] said [0559], I pray thee, let a double [08147] portion [06310] of thy spirit [07307] be upon me.
10 And he said [0559], Thou hast asked [07592] a hard thing [07185]: nevertheless, if thou see [07200] me when I am taken [03947] from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
11 And it came to pass, as they still [01980] went on [01980], and talked [01696], that, behold, there appeared a chariot [07393] of fire [0784], and horses [05483] of fire [0784], and parted [06504] them both [08147] asunder [0996]; and Elijah [0452] went up [05927] by a whirlwind [05591] into heaven [08064].
12 And Elisha [0477] saw [07200] it, and he cried [06817], My father [01], my father [01], the chariot [07393] of Israel [03478], and the horsemen [06571] thereof. And he saw [07200] him no more: and he took hold [02388] of his own clothes [0899], and rent [07167] them in two [08147] pieces [07168].
15 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto him, Go [03212], return [07725] on thy way [01870] to the wilderness [04057] of Damascus [01834]: and when thou comest [0935], anoint [04886] Hazael [02371] to be king [04428] over Syria [0758]:
62 And [1161] Jesus [2424] said [2036] unto [4314] him [846], No man [3762], having put [1911] his [846] hand [5495] to [1909] the plough [723], and [2532] looking [991] back [1519] [3694], is [2076] fit [2111] for [1519] the kingdom [932] of God [2316].
22 And the three [07969] hundred [03967] blew [08628] the trumpets [07782], and the LORD [03068] set [07760] every man's [0376] sword [02719] against his fellow [07453], even throughout all the host [04264]: and the host [04264] fled [05127] to Bethshittah [01029] in Zererath [06888], and to the border [08193] of Abelmeholah [065], unto Tabbath [02888].
8 And they answered [0559] him, He was an hairy [08181] man [01167] [0376], and girt [0247] with a girdle [0232] of leather [05785] about his loins [04975]. And he said [0559], It is Elijah [0452] the Tishbite [08664].
4 And it shall come to pass in that day [03117], that the prophets [05030] shall be ashamed [0954] every one [0376] of his vision [02384], when he hath prophesied [05012]; neither shall they wear [03847] a rough [08181] garment [0155] to deceive [03584]:
