JOAB KILLS ABNER. (Sa2 3:22-30)
Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done?--Joab's knowledge of Abner's wily character might have led him to doubt the sincerity of that person's proposals and to disapprove the policy of relying on his fidelity. But undoubtedly there were other reasons of a private and personal nature which made Joab displeased and alarmed by the reception given to Abner. The military talents of that general, his popularity with the army, his influence throughout the nation, rendered him a formidable rival. In the event of his overtures being carried out, the important service of bringing over all the other tribes to the king of Judah would establish so strong a claim on the gratitude of David, that his accession would inevitably raise a serious obstacle to the ambition of Joab. To these considerations was added the remembrance of the blood feud that existed between them since the death of his brother Asahel (Sa2 2:23). Determined, therefore, to get Abner out of the way, Joab feigned some reason, probably in the king's name, for recalling him, and, going out to meet him, stabbed him unawares; not within Hebron, for it was a city of refuge, but at a noted well in the neighborhood. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Joab saw that if Abner was reconciled to David, his own post as second in the state would be forfeited; and then with characteristic unscrupulosity he proceeded to take Abner's life. |
23 Howbeit he refused [03985] to turn aside [05493]: wherefore Abner [074] with the hinder end [0310] of the spear [02595] smote [05221] him under [0413] the fifth [02570] rib, that the spear [02595] came out [03318] behind [0310] him; and he fell down [05307] there, and died [04191] in the same place [08478]: and it came to pass, that as many as came [0935] to the place [04725] where Asahel [06214] fell down [05307] and died [04191] stood still [05975].
22 And, behold, the servants [05650] of David [01732] and Joab [03097] came [0935] from pursuing a troop [01416], and brought in [0935] a great [07227] spoil [07998] with them: but Abner [074] was not with David [01732] in Hebron [02275]; for he had sent him away [07971], and he was gone [03212] in peace [07965].
23 When Joab [03097] and all the host [06635] that was with him were come [0935], they told [05046] Joab [03097], saying [0559], Abner [074] the son [01121] of Ner [05369] came [0935] to the king [04428], and he hath sent him away [07971], and he is gone [03212] in peace [07965].
24 Then Joab [03097] came [0935] to the king [04428], and said [0559], What hast thou done [06213]? behold, Abner [074] came [0935] unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away [07971], and he is quite [01980] gone [03212]?
25 Thou knowest [03045] Abner [074] the son [01121] of Ner [05369], that he came [0935] to deceive [06601] thee, and to know [03045] thy going out [04161] and thy coming in [04126] [03996], and to know [03045] all that thou doest [06213].
26 And when Joab [03097] was come out [03318] from David [01732], he sent [07971] messengers [04397] after [0310] Abner [074], which brought him again [07725] from the well [0953] of Sirah [05626]: but David [01732] knew [03045] it not.
27 And when Abner [074] was returned [07725] to Hebron [02275], Joab [03097] took him aside [05186] in [0413] [08432] the gate [08179] to speak [01696] with him quietly [07987], and smote [05221] him there under the fifth [02570] rib, that he died [04191], for the blood [01818] of Asahel [06214] his brother [0251].
28 And afterward [0310] when David [01732] heard [08085] it, he said [0559], I and my kingdom [04467] are guiltless [05355] before the LORD [03068] for [05704] ever [05769] from the blood [01818] of Abner [074] the son [01121] of Ner [05369]:
29 Let it rest [02342] on the head [07218] of Joab [03097], and on all his father's [01] house [01004]; and let there not fail [03772] from the house [01004] of Joab [03097] one that hath an issue [02100], or that is a leper [06879], or that leaneth [02388] on a staff [06418], or that falleth [05307] on the sword [02719], or that lacketh [02638] bread [03899].
30 So Joab [03097] and Abishai [052] his brother [0251] slew [02026] Abner [074], because he had slain [04191] their brother [0251] Asahel [06214] at Gibeon [01391] in the battle [04421].
