A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
HE, HAVING THREE PLAGUES PROPOUNDED BY GAD, REPENTS, AND CHOOSES THREE DAYS' PESTILENCE. (Sa2 24:10-14)

David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the Lord, I have sinned--The act of numbering the people was not in itself sinful; for Moses did it by the express authority of God. But David acted not only independently of such order or sanction, but from motives unworthy of the delegated king of Israel; from pride and vainglory; from self-confidence and distrust of God; and, above all, from ambitious designs of conquest, in furtherance of which he was determined to force the people into military service, and to ascertain whether he could muster an army sufficient for the magnitude of the enterprises he contemplated. It was a breach of the constitution, an infringement of the liberties of the people, and opposed to that divine policy which required that Israel should continue a separate people. His eyes were not opened to the heinousness of his sin till God had spoken unto him by His commissioned prophet.

10 And David's [01732] heart [03820] smote [05221] him after [0310] that he had numbered [05608] the people [05971]. And David [01732] said [0559] unto the LORD [03068], I have sinned [02398] greatly [03966] in that I have done [06213]: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD [03068], take away [05674] the iniquity [05771] of thy servant [05650]; for I have done very [03966] foolishly [05528].
11 For when David [01732] was up [06965] in the morning [01242], the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came unto the prophet [05030] Gad [01410], David's [01732] seer [02374], saying [0559],
12 Go [01980] and say [0559] unto David [01732], Thus saith [01696] the LORD [03068], I offer [05190] thee three [07969] things; choose [0977] thee one [0259] of them, that I may do it unto thee [06213].
13 So Gad [01410] came [0935] to David [01732], and told [05046] him, and said [0559] unto him, Shall seven [07651] years [08141] of famine [07458] come [0935] unto thee in thy land [0776]? or wilt thou flee [05127] three [07969] months [02320] before [06440] thine enemies [06862], while they pursue [07291] thee? or that there be three [07969] days [03117]' pestilence [01698] in thy land [0776]? now advise [03045], and see [07200] what answer [01697] I shall return [07725] to him that sent [07971] me.
14 And David [01732] said [0559] unto Gad [01410], I am in a great [03966] strait [06887]: let us fall [05307] now into the hand [03027] of the LORD [03068]; for his mercies [07356] are great [07227]: and let me not fall [05307] into the hand [03027] of man [0120].
21 And Araunah [0728] said [0559], Wherefore is my lord [0113] the king [04428] come [0935] to his servant [05650]? And David [01732] said [0559], To buy [07069] the threshingfloor [01637] of thee, to build [01129] an altar [04196] unto the LORD [03068], that the plague [04046] may be stayed [06113] from the people [05971].
18 And Gad [01410] came [0935] that day [03117] to David [01732], and said [0559] unto him, Go up [05927], rear [06965] an altar [04196] unto the LORD [03068] in the threshingfloor [01637] of Araunah [0728] the Jebusite [02983].
17 And David [01732] spake [0559] unto the LORD [03068] when he saw [07200] the angel [04397] that smote [05221] the people [05971], and said [0559], Lo, I have sinned [02398], and I have done wickedly [05753]: but these sheep [06629], what have they done [06213]? let thine hand [03027], I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's [01] house [01004].
18 And Gad [01410] came [0935] that day [03117] to David [01732], and said [0559] unto him, Go up [05927], rear [06965] an altar [04196] unto the LORD [03068] in the threshingfloor [01637] of Araunah [0728] the Jebusite [02983].
16 And when the angel [04397] stretched out [07971] his hand [03027] upon Jerusalem [03389] to destroy [07843] it, the LORD [03068] repented [05162] him of the evil [07451], and said [0559] to the angel [04397] that destroyed [07843] the people [05971], It is enough [07227]: stay [07503] now thine hand [03027]. And the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] was by the threshingplace [01637] of Araunah [0728] the Jebusite [02983].
24 And the king [04428] said [0559] unto Araunah [0728], Nay; but I will surely [07069] buy [07069] it of thee at a price [04242]: neither will I offer [05927] burnt offerings [05930] unto the LORD [03068] my God [0430] of that which doth cost me nothing [02600]. So David [01732] bought [07069] the threshingfloor [01637] and the oxen [01241] for fifty [02572] shekels [08255] of silver [03701].
23 All these things did Araunah [0728], as a king [04428], give [05414] unto the king [04428]. And Araunah [0728] said [0559] unto the king [04428], The LORD [03068] thy God [0430] accept [07521] thee.
22 And Araunah [0728] said [0559] unto David [01732], Let my lord [0113] the king [04428] take [03947] and offer up [05927] what seemeth good [02896] unto him [05869]: behold [07200], here be oxen [01241] for burnt sacrifice [05930], and threshing instruments [04173] and other instruments [03627] of the oxen [01241] for wood [06086].
20 And Araunah [0728] looked [08259], and saw [07200] the king [04428] and his servants [05650] coming on [05674] toward him: and Araunah [0728] went out [03318], and bowed [07812] himself before the king [04428] on his face [0639] upon the ground [0776].
25 And David [01732] built [01129] there an altar [04196] unto the LORD [03068], and offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and peace offerings [08002]. So the LORD [03068] was intreated [06279] for the land [0776], and the plague [04046] was stayed [06113] from Israel [03478].
13 And it came to pass, when Joshua [03091] was by Jericho [03405], that he lifted up [05375] his eyes [05869] and looked [07200], and, behold, there stood [05975] a man [0376] over against him with his sword [02719] drawn [08025] in his hand [03027]: and Joshua [03091] went [03212] unto him, and said [0559] unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries [06862]?
23 And the ass [0860] saw [07200] the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] standing [05324] in the way [01870], and his sword [02719] drawn [08025] in his hand [03027]: and the ass [0860] turned aside [05186] out of the way [01870], and went [03212] into the field [07704]: and Balaam [01109] smote [05221] the ass [0860], to turn [05186] her into the way [01870].
6 And it repented [05162] the LORD [03068] that he had made [06213] man [0120] on the earth [0776], and it grieved [06087] him at [0413] his heart [03820].
19 Did Hezekiah [02396] king [04428] of Judah [03063] and all Judah [03063] put him at all [04191] to death [04191]? did he not fear [03373] the LORD [03068], and besought [02470] the LORD [03068] [06440], and the LORD [03068] repented [05162] him of the evil [07451] which he had pronounced [01696] against them? Thus [0587] might we procure [06213] great [01419] evil [07451] against our souls [05315].
13 Therefore now amend [03190] your ways [01870] and your doings [04611], and obey [08085] the voice [06963] of the LORD [03068] your God [0430]; and the LORD [03068] will repent [05162] him of the evil [07451] that he hath pronounced [01696] against you.
14 And the LORD [03068] repented [05162] of the evil [07451] which he thought [01696] to do [06213] unto his people [05971].
22 Thou hast called [07121] as in a solemn [04150] day [03117] my terrors [04032] round about [05439], so that in the day [03117] of the LORD'S [03068] anger [0639] none escaped [06412] nor remained [08300]: those that I have swaddled [02946] and brought up [07235] hath mine enemy [0341] consumed [03615].
7 The Lord [0136] hath cast off [02186] his altar [04196], he hath abhorred [05010] his sanctuary [04720], he hath given up [05462] into the hand [03027] of the enemy [0341] the walls [02346] of her palaces [0759]; they have made [05414] a noise [06963] in the house [01004] of the LORD [03068], as in the day [03117] of a solemn feast [04150].
5 What will ye do [06213] in the solemn [04150] day [03117], and in the day [03117] of the feast [02282] of the LORD [03068]?
1 Now [1161] Peter [4074] and [2532] John [2491] went up [305] together [1909] [846] into [1519] the temple [2411] at the hour [5610] of prayer [4335], being the ninth [1766] hour.
15 So the LORD [03068] sent [05414] a pestilence [01698] upon Israel [03478] from the morning [01242] even to the time [06256] appointed [04150]: and there died [04191] of the people [05971] from Dan [01835] even to Beersheba [0884] seventy [07657] thousand [0505] men [0376].
12 Go [01980] and say [0559] unto David [01732], Thus saith [01696] the LORD [03068], I offer [05190] thee three [07969] things; choose [0977] thee one [0259] of them, that I may do it unto thee [06213].
11 For when David [01732] was up [06965] in the morning [01242], the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came unto the prophet [05030] Gad [01410], David's [01732] seer [02374], saying [0559],
11 For when David [01732] was up [06965] in the morning [01242], the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came unto the prophet [05030] Gad [01410], David's [01732] seer [02374], saying [0559],
13 So Gad [01410] came [0935] to David [01732], and told [05046] him, and said [0559] unto him, Shall seven [07651] years [08141] of famine [07458] come [0935] unto thee in thy land [0776]? or wilt thou flee [05127] three [07969] months [02320] before [06440] thine enemies [06862], while they pursue [07291] thee? or that there be three [07969] days [03117]' pestilence [01698] in thy land [0776]? now advise [03045], and see [07200] what answer [01697] I shall return [07725] to him that sent [07971] me.
1 And again [03254] the anger [0639] of the LORD [03068] was kindled [02734] against Israel [03478], and he moved [05496] David [01732] against them to say [0559], Go [03212], number [04487] Israel [03478] and Judah [03063].
