Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Ishbi-benob - A corrupt reading. The whole passage should perhaps run thus: "And David waxed faint. So they halted in Gob (as in Sa2 21:18-19). And there was a man (in Gob) which was of the sons of the giant, etc."
Sons of the giant - The "giant" here Sa2 21:18, Sa2 21:20, Sa2 21:22 is "ha-Raphah," whence, the "Rephaim" Gen 14:5; Deu 2:11. The sons of Ha-raphah, or Rephaim, are different from the "Nephilim," or Giants Gen 6:4; Num 13:33. The sons of Anak were not strictly Rephaim, but Nephilim.
Three hundred shekels of brass - About eight pounds. Goliath's spear's head weighed "six hundred shekels of iron." |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Being girded with a new sword - As the word sword is not in the original, we may apply the term new to his armor in general; he had got new arms, a new coat of mail, or something that defended him well, and rendered him very formidable: or it may mean a strong or sharp sword. |
33 And there we saw [07200] the giants [05303], the sons [01121] of Anak [06061], which come of the giants [05303]: and we were in our own sight [05869] as grasshoppers [02284], and so we were in their sight [05869].
4 There were giants [05303] in the earth [0776] in those days [03117]; and also after [0310] that [03651], when [0834] the sons [01121] of God [0430] came in [0935] unto the daughters [01323] of men [0120], and they bare [03205] children to them, the same [01992] became mighty men [01368] which were of old [05769], men [0582] of renown [08034].
11 Which [01992] also were accounted [02803] giants [07497], as the Anakims [06062]; but the Moabites [04125] call [07121] them Emims [0368].
5 And in the fourteenth [06240] [0702] year [08141] came [0935] Chedorlaomer [03540], and the kings [04428] that were with him, and smote [05221] the Rephaims [07497] in Ashteroth Karnaim [06255], and the Zuzims [02104] in Ham [01990], and the Emims [0368] in Shaveh Kiriathaim [07741],
22 These four [0702] were born [03205] to the giant [07497] in Gath [01661], and fell [05307] by the hand [03027] of David [01732], and by the hand [03027] of his servants [05650].
20 And there was yet a battle [04421] in Gath [01661], where was a man [0376] of great stature [04067] [04055], that had on every hand [03027] six [08337] fingers [0676], and on every foot [07272] six [08337] toes [0676], four [0702] and twenty [06242] in number [04557]; and he also was born [03205] to the giant [07497].
18 And it came to pass after this [0310], that there was again a battle [04421] with the Philistines [06430] at Gob [01359]: then Sibbechai [05444] the Hushathite [02843] slew [05221] Saph [05593], which was of the sons [03211] of the giant [07497].
18 And it came to pass after this [0310], that there was again a battle [04421] with the Philistines [06430] at Gob [01359]: then Sibbechai [05444] the Hushathite [02843] slew [05221] Saph [05593], which was of the sons [03211] of the giant [07497].
19 And there was again a battle [04421] in Gob [01359] with the Philistines [06430], where Elhanan [0445] the son [01121] of Jaareoregim [03296], a Bethlehemite [01022], slew [05221] the brother of Goliath [01555] the Gittite [01663], the staff [06086] of whose spear [02595] was like a weaver's [0707] beam [04500].
