A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
And say ye to Amasa, &c.--This also was a dextrous stroke of policy. David was fully alive to the importance, for extinguishing the rebellion, of withdrawing from that cause the only leader who could keep it alive; and he, therefore, secretly intimated his intention to raise Amasa to the command of the army in the place of Joab, whose overbearing haughtiness had become intolerable. The king justly reckoned, that from natural temper as well as gratitude for the royal pardon, he would prove a more tractable servant; and David, doubtless, intended in all sincerity to fulfil this promise. But Joab managed to retain his high position (see on Sa2 20:4-10).

4 Then said [0559] the king [04428] to Amasa [06021], Assemble [02199] me the men [0376] of Judah [03063] within three [07969] days [03117], and be thou here present [05975].
5 So Amasa [06021] went [03212] to assemble [02199] the men of Judah [03063]: but he tarried longer [0309] [03186] than the set time [04150] which he had appointed [03259] him.
6 And David [01732] said [0559] to Abishai [052], Now shall Sheba [07652] the son [01121] of Bichri [01075] do us more harm [03415] than did Absalom [053]: take [03947] thou thy lord's [0113] servants [05650], and pursue [07291] after [0310] him, lest he get [04672] him fenced [01219] cities [05892], and escape [05337] us [05869].
7 And there went out [03318] after [0310] him Joab's [03097] men [0582], and the Cherethites [03774], and the Pelethites [06432], and all the mighty men [01368]: and they went out [03318] of Jerusalem [03389], to pursue [07291] after [0310] Sheba [07652] the son [01121] of Bichri [01075].
8 When they were at the great [01419] stone [068] which is in Gibeon [01391], Amasa [06021] went [0935] before [06440] them. And Joab's [03097] garment [04055] that he had put on [03830] was girded [02296] unto him, and upon it a girdle [02289] with a sword [02719] fastened [06775] upon his loins [04975] in the sheath [08593] thereof; and as he went forth [03318] it fell out [05307].
9 And Joab [03097] said [0559] to Amasa [06021], Art thou in health [07965], my brother [0251]? And Joab [03097] took [0270] Amasa [06021] by the beard [02206] with the right [03225] hand [03027] to kiss [05401] him.
10 But Amasa [06021] took no heed [08104] to the sword [02719] that was in Joab's [03097] hand [03027]: so he smote [05221] him therewith in the fifth [02570] rib, and shed out [08210] his bowels [04578] to the ground [0776], and struck him not again [08138]; and he died [04191]. So Joab [03097] and Abishai [052] his brother [0251] pursued [07291] after [0310] Sheba [07652] the son [01121] of Bichri [01075].
10 And the king [04428] said [0559], What have I to do with you, ye sons [01121] of Zeruiah [06870]? so let him curse [07043], because the LORD [03068] hath said [0559] unto him, Curse [07043] David [01732]. Who shall then say [0559], Wherefore hast thou done so [06213]?
39 And I am this day [03117] weak [07390], though anointed [04886] king [04428]; and these men [0582] the sons [01121] of Zeruiah [06870] be too hard [07186] for me: the LORD [03068] shall reward [07999] the doer of evil [06213] according to his wickedness [07451].
22 And David [01732] said [0559], What have I to do with you, ye sons [01121] of Zeruiah [06870], that ye should this day [03117] be adversaries [07854] unto me? shall there any man [0376] be put to death [04191] this day [03117] in Israel [03478]? for do not I know [03045] that I am this day [03117] king [04428] over Israel [03478]?
12 Ye are my brethren [0251], ye are my bones [06106] and my flesh [01320]: wherefore then are ye the last [0314] to bring back [07725] the king [04428]?
1 Then came [0935] all the tribes [07626] of Israel [03478] to David [01732] unto Hebron [02275], and spake [0559], saying [0559], Behold, we are thy bone [06106] and thy flesh [01320].
