URIAH SLAIN. (Sa2 11:14-27)

David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah . . . Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle--The various arts and stratagems by which the king tried to cajole Uriah, till at last he resorted to the horrid crime of murder--the cold-blooded cruelty of despatching the letter by the hands of the gallant but much-wronged soldier himself, the enlistment of Joab to be a partaker of his sin, the heartless affectation of mourning, and the indecent haste of his marriage with Bath-sheba--have left an indelible stain upon the character of David, and exhibit a painfully humiliating proof of the awful lengths to which the best of men may go when they forfeit the restraining grace of God.

 And it came to pass in the morning [01242], that David [01732] wrote [03789] a letter [05612] to Joab [03097], and sent [07971] it by the hand [03027] of Uriah [0223].
 And he wrote [03789] in the letter [05612], saying [0559], Set [03051] ye Uriah [0223] in the forefront [06440] [04136] of the hottest [02389] battle [04421], and retire [07725] ye from him [0310], that he may be smitten [05221], and die [04191].
 And it came to pass, when Joab [03097] observed [08104] the city [05892], that he assigned [05414] Uriah [0223] unto a place [04725] where he knew [03045] that valiant [02428] men [0582] were.
 And the men [0582] of the city [05892] went out [03318], and fought [03898] with Joab [03097]: and there fell [05307] some of the people [05971] of the servants [05650] of David [01732]; and Uriah [0223] the Hittite [02850] died [04191] also.
 Then Joab [03097] sent [07971] and told [05046] David [01732] all the things [01697] concerning the war [04421];
 And charged [06680] the messenger [04397], saying [0559], When thou hast made an end [03615] of telling [01696] the matters [01697] of the war [04421] unto the king [04428],
 And if so be that the king's [04428] wrath [02534] arise [05927], and he say [0559] unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh [05066] unto the city [05892] when ye did fight [03898]? knew [03045] ye not that they would shoot [03384] from the wall [02346]?
 Who smote [05221] Abimelech [040] the son [01121] of Jerubbesheth [03380]? did not a woman [0802] cast [07993] a piece [06400] of a millstone [07393] upon him from the wall [02346], that he died [04191] in Thebez [08405]? why went ye nigh [05066] the wall [02346]? then say [0559] thou, Thy servant [05650] Uriah [0223] the Hittite [02850] is dead [04191] also.
 So the messenger [04397] went [03212], and came [0935] and shewed [05046] David [01732] all that Joab [03097] had sent [07971] him for.
 And the messenger [04397] said [0559] unto David [01732], Surely the men [0582] prevailed [01396] against us, and came out [03318] unto us into the field [07704], and we were upon them even unto the entering [06607] of the gate [08179].
 And the shooters [03384] shot [03384] from off the wall [02346] upon thy servants [05650]; and some of the king's [04428] servants [05650] be dead [04191], and thy servant [05650] Uriah [0223] the Hittite [02850] is dead [04191] also.
 Then David [01732] said [0559] unto the messenger [04397], Thus shalt thou say [0559] unto Joab [03097], Let not this thing [01697] displease [03415] [05869] thee, for the sword [02719] devoureth [0398] one as well as another [02090]: make thy battle [04421] more strong [02388] against the city [05892], and overthrow [02040] it: and encourage [02388] thou him.
 And when the wife [0802] of Uriah [0223] heard [08085] that Uriah [0223] her husband [0376] was dead [04191], she mourned [05594] for her husband [01167].
 And when the mourning [060] was past [05674], David [01732] sent [07971] and fetched [0622] her to his house [01004], and she became his wife [0802], and bare [03205] him a son [01121]. But the thing [01697] that David [01732] had done [06213] displeased [03415] [05869] the LORD [03068].
