THE DINNER. (Gen 43:31-34)
Joseph said, Set on bread--equivalent to having dinner served, "bread" being a term inclusive of all victuals. The table was a small stool, most probably the usual round form, "since persons might even then be seated according to their rank or seniority, and the modern Egyptian table is not without its post of honor and a fixed gradation of place" [WILKINSON]. Two or at most three persons were seated at one table. But the host being the highest in rank of the company had a table to himself; while it was so arranged that an Egyptian was not placed nor obliged to eat from the same dish as a Hebrew. |
31 And he washed [07364] his face [06440], and went out [03318], and refrained [0662] himself, and said [0559], Set on [07760] bread [03899].
32 And they set on [07760] for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians [04713], which did eat [0398] with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians [04713] might [03201] not eat [0398] bread [03899] with the Hebrews [05680]; for that is an abomination [08441] unto the Egyptians [04714].
33 And they sat [03427] before him [06440], the firstborn [01060] according to his birthright [01062], and the youngest [06810] according to his youth [06812]: and the men [0582] marvelled [08539] one [0376] at another [07453].
34 And he took [05375] and sent messes [04864] unto them from before him [06440]: but Benjamin's [01144] mess [04864] was five [02568] times [03027] so much as [07235] any of theirs. And they drank [08354], and were merry [07937] with him.
