  King James And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.

TWO STATE PRISONERS. (Gen 40:1-8)

the butler--not only the cup-bearer, but overseer of the royal vineyards, as well as the cellars; having, probably, some hundreds of people under him.

baker--or cook, had the superintendence of every thing relating to the providing and preparing of meats for the royal table. Both officers, especially the former, were, in ancient Egypt, always persons of great rank and importance; and from the confidential nature of their employment, as well as their access to the royal presence, they were generally the highest nobles or princes of the blood.

2 And Pharaoh [06547] was wroth [07107] against [05921] two [08147] of his officers [05631], against the chief [08269] of the butlers [08248], and against the chief [08269] of the bakers [0644].

6 And Joseph [03130] came in [0935] unto them in the morning [01242], and looked [07200] upon them, and, behold, they were sad [02196].
7 And he asked [07592] Pharaoh's [06547] officers [05631] that were with him in the ward [04929] of his lord's [0113] house [01004], saying [0559], Wherefore look [06440] ye so sadly [07451] to day [03117]?
8 And they said [0559] unto him, We have dreamed [02492] a dream [02472], and there is no interpreter [06622] of it. And Joseph [03130] said [0559] unto them, Do not interpretations [06623] belong to God [0430]? tell me [05608] them, I pray you.
