A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
when God destroyed the cities, &c.--This is most welcome and instructive after so painful a narrative. It shows if God is a "consuming fire" to the wicked [Deu 4:24; Heb 12:29], He is the friend of the righteous. He "remembered" the intercessions of Abraham, and what confidence should not this give us that He will remember the intercessions of a greater than Abraham in our behalf. |

when God
(See Scofield) - (Gen 19:36). |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
For on the destruction of these cities, God had thought of Abraham, and rescued Lot. This rescue is attributed to Elohim, as being the work of the Judge of the whole earth (Gen 18:25), and not to Jehovah the covenant God, because Lot was severed from His guidance and care on his separation from Abraham. The fact, however, is repeated here, for the purpose of connecting with it an event in the life of Lot of great significance to the future history of Abraham's seed.
Gen 19:30-35
From Zoar Lot removed with his two daughters to the (Moabitish) mountains, for fear that Zoar might after all be destroyed, and dwelt in one of the caves (מערה with the generic article), in which the limestone rocks abound (vid., Lynch), and so became a dweller in a cave. While there, his daughters resolved to procure children through their father; and to that end on two successive evenings they made him intoxicated with wine, and then lay with him in the might, one after the other, that they might conceive seed. To this accursed crime they were impelled by the desire to preserve their family, because they thought there was no man on the earth to come in unto them, i.e., to marry them, "after the manner of all the earth." Not that they imagined the whole human race to have perished in the destruction of the valley of Siddim, but because they were afraid that no man would link himself with them, the only survivors of a country smitten by the curse of God. If it was not lust, therefore, which impelled them to this shameful deed, their conduct was worthy of Sodom, and shows quite as much as their previous betrothal to men of Sodom, that they were deeply imbued with the sinful character of that city. The words of Gen 19:33 and Gen 19:35, "And he knew not of her lying down and of her rising up," do not affirm that he was in an unconscious state, as the Rabbins are said by Jerome to have indicated by the point over בּקוּמה: "quasi incredibile et quod natura rerum non capiat, coire quempiam nescientem." They merely mean, that in his intoxicated state, though not entirely unconscious, yet he lay with his daughters without clearly knowing what he was doing.
Gen 19:36-38
But Lot's daughters had so little feeling of shame in connection with their conduct, that they gave names to the sons they bore, which have immortalized their paternity. Moab, another form of מאב "from the father," as is indicated in the clause appended in the lxx: λέγουσα ἐκ τοῦ πατρός μου, and also rendered probable by the reiteration of the words "of our father" and "by their father" (Gen 19:32, Gen 19:34, and Gen 19:36), as well as by the analogy of the name Ben-Ammi = Ammon, Ἀμμάν, λέγουσα Υἱος γένους μου (lxx). For עמּון, the sprout of the nation, bears the same relation to עם, as אגמון, the rush or sprout of the marsh, to אגם Delitzsch). - This account was neither the invention of national hatred to the Moabites and Ammonites, nor was it placed here as a brand upon those tribes. These discoveries of a criticism imbued with hostility to the Bible are overthrown by the fact, that, according to Deu 2:9, Deu 2:19, Israel was ordered not to touch the territory of either of these tribes because of their descent from Lot; and it was their unbrotherly conduct towards Israel alone which first prevented their reception into the congregation of the Lord, Deu 23:4-5. - Lot is never mentioned again. Separated both outwardly and inwardly from Abraham, he was of no further importance in relation to the history of salvation, so that even his death is not referred to. His descendants, however, frequently came into contact with the Israelites; and the history of their descent is given here to facilitate a correct appreciation of their conduct towards Israel. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
God remembered Abraham, and for his sake sent Lot out of the overthrow - God will certainly give an answer of peace to the prayer of faith in his own way and time. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
God remembered Abraham - Though he did not descend lower than ten righteous persons, (see Gen 18:32), yet the Lord had respect to the spirit of his petitions, and spared all those who could be called righteous, and for Abraham's sake offered salvation to all the family of Lot, though neither his sons-in-law elect nor his own wife ultimately profited by it. The former ridiculed the warning; and the latter, though led out by the hands of the angel, yet by breaking the command of God perished with the other gainsayers. |
29 For [2532] [1063] our [2257] God [2316] is a consuming [2654] fire [4442].
24 For the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] is a consuming [0398] fire [0784], even a jealous [07067] God [0410].
36 Thus were both [08147] the daughters [01323] of Lot [03876] with child [02029] by their father [01].
4 Because [01697] they met [06923] you not with bread [03899] and with water [04325] in the way [01870], when ye came forth [03318] out of Egypt [04714]; and because they hired [07936] against thee Balaam [01109] the son [01121] of Beor [01160] of Pethor [06604] of Mesopotamia [0763], to curse [07043] thee.
5 Nevertheless the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] would [014] not hearken [08085] unto Balaam [01109]; but the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] turned [02015] the curse [07045] into a blessing [01293] unto thee, because the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] loved [0157] thee.
19 And when thou comest nigh [07126] over against [04136] the children [01121] of Ammon [05983], distress [06696] them not, nor meddle [01624] with them: for I will not give [05414] thee of the land [0776] of the children [01121] of Ammon [05983] any possession [03425]; because I have given [05414] it unto the children [01121] of Lot [03876] for a possession [03425].
9 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto me, Distress [06696] not the Moabites [04124], neither contend [01624] with them in battle [04421]: for I will not give [05414] thee of their land [0776] for a possession [03425]; because I have given [05414] Ar [06144] unto the children [01121] of Lot [03876] for a possession [03425].
36 Thus were both [08147] the daughters [01323] of Lot [03876] with child [02029] by their father [01].
34 And it came to pass on the morrow [04283], that the firstborn [01067] said [0559] unto the younger [06810], Behold, I lay [07901] yesternight [0570] with my father [01]: let us make him drink [08248] wine [03196] this night [03915] also; and go thou in [0935], and lie [07901] with him, that we may preserve [02421] seed [02233] of our father [01].
32 Come [03212], let us make [08248] our father [01] drink [08248] wine [03196], and we will lie [07901] with him, that we may preserve [02421] seed [02233] of our father [01].
36 Thus were both [08147] the daughters [01323] of Lot [03876] with child [02029] by their father [01].
37 And the firstborn [01067] bare [03205] a son [01121], and called [07121] his name [08034] Moab [04124]: the same [01931] is the father [01] of the Moabites [04124] unto this day [03117].
38 And the younger [06810], she also bare [03205] a son [01121], and called [07121] his name [08034] Benammi [01151]: the same is the father [01] of the children [01121] of Ammon [05983] unto this day [03117].
35 And they made [08248] their father [01] drink [08248] wine [03196] that [01931] night [03915] also: and the younger [06810] arose [06965], and lay [07901] with him; and he perceived [03045] not when she lay down [07901], nor when she arose [06965].
33 And they made [08248] their father [01] drink [08248] wine [03196] that night [03915]: and the firstborn [01067] went in [0935], and lay [07901] with her father [01]; and he perceived [03045] not when she lay down [07901], nor when she arose [06965].
30 And Lot [03876] went up [05927] out of Zoar [06820], and dwelt [03427] in the mountain [02022], and his two [08147] daughters [01323] with him; for he feared [03372] to dwell [03427] in Zoar [06820]: and he dwelt [03427] in a cave [04631], he and his two [08147] daughters [01323].
31 And the firstborn [01067] said [0559] unto the younger [06810], Our father [01] is old [02204], and there is not a man [0376] in the earth [0776] to come in [0935] unto us after the manner [01870] of all the earth [0776]:
32 Come [03212], let us make [08248] our father [01] drink [08248] wine [03196], and we will lie [07901] with him, that we may preserve [02421] seed [02233] of our father [01].
33 And they made [08248] their father [01] drink [08248] wine [03196] that night [03915]: and the firstborn [01067] went in [0935], and lay [07901] with her father [01]; and he perceived [03045] not when she lay down [07901], nor when she arose [06965].
35 And they made [08248] their father [01] drink [08248] wine [03196] that [01931] night [03915] also: and the younger [06810] arose [06965], and lay [07901] with him; and he perceived [03045] not when she lay down [07901], nor when she arose [06965].
25 That be far [02486] from thee to do [06213] after this manner [01697], to slay [04191] the righteous [06662] with the wicked [07563]: and that the righteous [06662] should be as the wicked [07563], that be far [02486] from thee: Shall not the Judge [08199] of all the earth [0776] do [06213] right [04941]?
32 And he said [0559], Oh let not the Lord [0136] be angry [02734], and I will speak [01696] yet [0389] but this once [06471]: Peradventure ten [06235] shall be found [04672] there. And he said [0559], I will not destroy [07843] it for ten's [06235] sake.
