The Abrahamic Covenant as formed (Gen 12:1-4) and confirmed; (Gen 13:14-17); (Gen 15:1-7); (Gen 17:1-8) is in seven distinct parts:
(1) "I will make of thee a great nation." Fulfilled in a threefold way:
(a) In a natural posterity -- "as the dust of the earth (Gen 13:16); (Joh 8:37); namely, the Hebrew people.
(b) In a spiritual posterity -- "look now toward heaven . . . so shall thy seed be" (Joh 8:39); (Rom 4:16-17); (Rom 9:7-8); (Gal 3:6); (Gal 3:7); (Gal 3:29) namely, all men of faith, whether Jew or Gentile.
(c) fulfilled also through Ishmael (Gen 17:18-20).
(2) "I will bless thee." Fulfilled in two ways:
(a) temporally (Gen 13:14); (Gen 13:15); (Gen 13:17); (Gen 15:18); (Gen 24:34-35)
(b) spiritually; (Gen 15:6); (Joh 8:56).
(3) "And make thy name great." Abraham's is one of the universal names.
(4) "And thou shalt be a blessing" (Gal 3:13); (Gal 3:14).
(5) "I will bless them that bless thee." In fulfilment closely related to the next clause.
(6) "And curse him that curseth thee." Wonderfully fulfilled in the history of the dispersion. It has invariably fared ill with the people who have persecuted the Jew -- well with those who have protected him. The future will still more remarkably prove this principle (Deu 30:7); (Isa 14:1); (Joe 3:1-8); (Mic 5:7-9); (Hag 2:22); (Zac 14:1-3); (Mat 25:40); (Mat 25:45).
(7) "In thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed." This is the great evangelic promise fulfilled in Abraham's Seed, Christ (Gal 3:16); (Joh 8:56-58).
It brings into greater definiteness the promise of the Adamic Covenant concerning the Seed of the woman (Gen 3:15).
NOTE. -- The gift of the land is modified by prophecies of three dispossessions and restorations (Gen 15:13); (Gen 15:14); (Gen 15:16); (Jer 25:11); (Jer 25:12); (Deu 28:62-65); (Deu 30:1-3). Two dispossessions and restorations have been accomplished. Israel is now in the third dispersion, from which she will be restored at the return of the Lord as King under the Davidic Covenant; (Deu 30:3); (Jer 23:5-8); (Eze 37:21-25); (Luk 1:30-33); (Act 15:14-17).

| In Gen 15:18-21 this divine revelation is described as the making of a covenant (בּרית, from בּרה to cut, lit., the bond concluded by cutting up the sacrificial animals), and the substance of this covenant is embraced in the promise, that God would give that land to the seed of Abram, from the river of Egypt to the great river Euphrates. The river (נהר) of Egypt is the Nile, and not the brook (נחל) of Egypt (Num 34:5), i.e., the boundary stream Rhinocorura, Wady el Arish. According to the oratorical character of the promise, the two large rivers, the Nile and the Euphrates, are mentioned as the boundaries within which the seed of Abram would possess the promised land, the exact limits of which are more minutely described in the list of the tribes who were then in possession. Ten tribes are mentioned between the southern border of the land and the extreme north, "to convey the impression of universality without exception, of unqualified completeness, the symbol of which is the number ten" (Delitzsch). In other passages we find sometimes seven tribes mentioned (Deu 7:1; Jos 3:10), at other times six (Exo 3:8, Exo 3:17; Exo 23:23; Deu 20:17), at others five (Exo 13:5), at others again only two (Gen 13:7); whilst occasionally they are all included in the common name of Canaanites (Gen 12:6). The absence of the Hivites is striking here, since they are not omitted from any other list where as many as five or seven tribes are mentioned. Out of the eleven descendants of Canaan (Gen 10:15-18) the names of four only are given here; the others are included in the common name of the Canaanites. On the other hand, four tribes are given, whose descent from Canaan is very improbable. The origin of the Kenites cannot be determined. According to Jdg 1:16; Jdg 4:11, Hobab, the brother-in-law of Moses, was a Kenite. His being called Midianite (Num 10:29) does not prove that he was descended from Midian (Gen 25:2), but is to be accounted for from the fact that he dwelt in the land of Midian, or among the Midianites (Exo 2:15). This branch of the Kenites went with the Israelites to Canaan, into the wilderness of Judah (Jdg 1:16), and dwelt even in Saul's time among the Amalekites on the southern border of Judah (Sa1 15:6), and in the same towns with members of the tribe of Judah (Sa1 30:29). There is nothing either in this passage, or in Num 24:21-22, to compel us to distinguish these Midianitish Kenites from those of Canaan. The Philistines also were not Canaanites, and yet their territory was assigned to the Israelites. And just as the Philistines had forced their way into the land, so the Kenites may have taken possession of certain tracts of the country. All that can be inferred from the two passages is, that there were Kenites outside Midian, who were to be exterminated by the Israelites. On the Kenizzites, all that can be affirmed with certainty is, that the name is neither to be traced to the Edomitish Kenaz (Gen 36:15, Gen 36:42), nor to be identified with the Kenezite Jephunneh, the father of Caleb of Judah (Num 32:12; Jos 14:6 : see my Comm. on Joshua, p. 356, Eng. tr.). - The Kadmonites are never mentioned again, and their origin cannot be determined. On the Perizzites see Gen 13:7; on the Rephaims, Gen 14:5; and on the other names, Gen 10:15-16. |

| In that same day, the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land - He had said before, To thy seed will I give this land, but here he saith, I have given it; that is, I have given the promise, the charter is sealed and delivered, and cannot be disanulled. The possession is as sure in due time, as if it were now actually delivered to them. In David's time and Solomon's their jurisdiction extended to the utmost of these limits, Ch2 9:26. And it was their own fault that they were not sooner and longer in possession of all these territories. They forfeited their right by their sins, and by their own sloth and cowardice kept themselves out of possession. The present occupants are named, because their number and strength and long prescription, should be no hindrance to the accomplishment of this promise in its season; and to magnify God's love to Abram and his seed, in giving to that one nation the possession of many nations. |

The Lord made a covenant - כרת ברית carath berith signifies to cut a covenant, or rather the covenant sacrifice; for as no covenant was made without one, and the creature was cut in two that the contracting parties might pass between the pieces, hence cutting the covenant signified making the covenant. The same form of speech obtained among the Romans; and because, in making their covenants they always slew an animal, either by cutting its throat, or knocking it down with a stone or axe, after which they divided the parts as we have already seen, hence among the percutere faedus, to smite a covenant, and scindere faedus, to cleave a covenant, were terms which signified simply to make or enter into a covenant.
From the river of Egypt - Not the Nile, but the river called Sichor, which was before or on the border of Egypt, near to the isthmus of Suez; see Jos 13:3; though some think that by this a branch of the Nile is meant. This promise was fully accomplished in the days of David and Solomon. See Sa2 8:3, etc., and Ch2 9:26. |

18 In the same [01931] day [03117] the LORD [03068] made [03772] a covenant [01285] with Abram [087], saying [0559], Unto thy seed [02233] have I given [05414] this land [0776], from the river [05104] of Egypt [04714] unto the great [01419] river [05104], the river [05104] Euphrates [06578]:
17 Arise [06965], walk [01980] through the land [0776] in the length [0753] of it and in the breadth [07341] of it; for I will give [05414] it unto thee.
15 For all the land [0776] which thou seest [07200], to thee will I give it [05414], and to thy seed [02233] for [05704] ever [05769].

20 And as for Ishmael [03458], I have heard thee [08085]: Behold, I have blessed [01288] him, and will make him fruitful [06509], and will multiply [07235] him exceedingly [03966] [03966]; twelve [06240] [08147] princes [05387] shall he beget [03205], and I will make him [05414] a great [01419] nation [01471].
29 And [1161] if [1487] ye [5210] be Christ's [5547], then [686] are ye [2075] Abraham's [11] seed [4690], and [2532] heirs [2818] according [2596] to the promise [1860].
7 Know ye [1097] therefore [686] that [3754] they which are of [1537] faith [4102], the same [3778] are [1526] the children [5207] of Abraham [11].
6 Even as [2531] Abraham [11] believed [4100] God [2316], and [2532] it was accounted [3049] to him [846] for [1519] righteousness [1343].
7 Neither [3761], because [3754] they are [1526] the seed [4690] of Abraham [11], are they all [3956] children [5043]: but [235], In [1722] Isaac [2464] shall [2564] thy [4671] seed [4690] be called [2564].
8 That is [5123], They which are the children [5043] of the flesh [4561], these [5023] are not [3756] the children [5043] of God [2316]: but [235] the children [5043] of the promise [1860] are counted [3049] for [1519] the seed [4690].
16 Therefore [1223] [5124] it is of [1537] faith [4102], that [2443] it might be by [2596] grace [5485]; to the end [1519] the promise [1860] might be [1511] sure [949] to all [3956] the seed [4690]; not [3756] to that only [3440] which is of [1537] the law [3551], but [235] to that also [2532] which is of [1537] the faith [4102] of Abraham [11]; who [3739] is [2076] the father [3962] of us [2257] all [3956],
17 (As [2531] it is written [1125], [3754] I have made [5087] thee [4571] a father [3962] of many [4183] nations [1484],) before [2713] him whom [3739] he believed [4100], even God [2316], who quickeneth [2227] the dead [3498], and [2532] calleth [2564] those things which be [5607] not [3361] as though [5613] they were [5607].
39 They answered [611] and [2532] said [2036] unto him [846], Abraham [11] is [2076] our [2257] father [3962]. Jesus [2424] saith [3004] unto them [846], If [1487] ye were [2258] Abraham's [11] children [5043], ye would do [4160] [302] the works [2041] of Abraham [11].
37 I know [1492] that [3754] ye are [2075] Abraham's [11] seed [4690]; but [235] ye seek [2212] to kill [615] me [3165], because [3754] my [1699] word [3056] hath [5562] no [3756] place [5562] in [1722] you [5213].

1 And when Abram [087] was ninety [08673] [08141] years [08141] old [01121] and nine [08672], the LORD [03068] appeared [07200] to Abram [087], and said [0559] unto him, I am the Almighty [07706] God [0410]; walk [01980] before me [06440], and be thou perfect [08549].
2 And I will make [05414] my covenant [01285] between me and thee, and will multiply [07235] thee exceedingly [03966] [03966].
3 And Abram [087] fell [05307] on his face [06440]: and God [0430] talked [01696] with him, saying [0559],
4 As for me [0589], behold, my covenant [01285] is with thee, and thou shalt be a father [01] of many [01995] nations [01471].
5 Neither shall thy name [08034] any more be called [07121] Abram [087], but thy name [08034] shall be Abraham [085]; for a father [01] of many [01995] nations [01471] have I made thee [05414].
6 And I will make [06509] thee exceeding [03966] [03966] fruitful [06509], and I will make [05414] nations [01471] of thee, and kings [04428] shall come out [03318] of thee.
7 And I will establish [06965] my covenant [01285] between me and thee and thy seed [02233] after thee [0310] in their generations [01755] for an everlasting [05769] covenant [01285], to be a God [0430] unto thee, and to thy seed [02233] after thee [0310].
8 And I will give [05414] unto thee, and to thy seed [02233] after thee [0310], the land [0776] wherein thou art a stranger [04033], all the land [0776] of Canaan [03667], for an everlasting [05769] possession [0272]; and I will be their God [0430].
1 After [0310] these things [01697] the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came [01961] unto Abram [087] in a vision [04236], saying [0559], Fear [03372] not, Abram [087]: I am thy shield [04043], and thy exceeding [03966] great [07235] reward [07939].
2 And Abram [087] said [0559], Lord [0136] GOD [03069], what wilt thou give [05414] me, seeing I go [01980] childless [06185], and the steward [01121] [04943] of my house [01004] is this [01931] Eliezer [0461] of Damascus [01834]?
3 And Abram [087] said [0559], Behold, to me thou hast given [05414] no [03808] seed [02233]: and, lo, one born [01121] in my house [01004] is mine heir [03423].
4 And, behold, the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came unto him, saying [0559], This shall not be thine heir [03423]; but he that shall come forth [03318] out of thine own bowels [04578] shall be thine heir [03423].
5 And he brought him forth [03318] abroad [02351], and said [0559], Look [05027] now toward heaven [08064], and tell [05608] the stars [03556], if thou be able [03201] to number [05608] them: and he said [0559] unto him, So [03541] shall thy seed [02233] be.
6 And he believed [0539] in the LORD [03068]; and he counted [02803] it to him for righteousness [06666].
7 And he said [0559] unto him, I am the LORD [03068] that brought thee out [03318] of Ur [0218] of the Chaldees [03778], to give [05414] thee this land [0776] to inherit [03423] it.
14 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Abram [087], after [0310] that Lot [03876] was separated [06504] from him, Lift up [05375] now thine eyes [05869], and look [07200] from the place [04725] where thou art northward [06828], and southward [05045], and eastward [06924], and westward [03220]:
15 For all the land [0776] which thou seest [07200], to thee will I give it [05414], and to thy seed [02233] for [05704] ever [05769].
16 And I will make [07760] thy seed [02233] as the dust [06083] of the earth [0776]: so that [0834] if a man [0376] can [03201] number [04487] the dust [06083] of the earth [0776], then shall thy seed [02233] also be numbered [04487].

4 So Abram [087] departed [03212], as the LORD [03068] had spoken [01696] unto him; and Lot [03876] went [03212] with him: and Abram [087] was seventy [07657] [08141] and five [02568] years [08141] old [01121] when he departed [03318] out of Haran [02771].
15 And Canaan [03667] begat [03205] Sidon [06721] his firstborn [01060], and Heth [02845],
16 And the Jebusite [02983], and the Amorite [0567], and the Girgasite [01622],
5 And in the fourteenth [06240] [0702] year [08141] came [0935] Chedorlaomer [03540], and the kings [04428] that were with him, and smote [05221] the Rephaims [07497] in Ashteroth Karnaim [06255], and the Zuzims [02104] in Ham [01990], and the Emims [0368] in Shaveh Kiriathaim [07741],
7 And there was a strife [07379] between the herdmen [07462] of Abram's [087] cattle [04735] and the herdmen [07462] of Lot's [03876] cattle [04735]: and the Canaanite [03669] and the Perizzite [06522] dwelled [03427] then in the land [0776].
6 Then the children [01121] of Judah [03063] came [05066] unto Joshua [03091] in Gilgal [01537]: and Caleb [03612] the son [01121] of Jephunneh [03312] the Kenezite [07074] said [0559] unto him, Thou knowest [03045] the thing [01697] that the LORD [03068] said [01696] unto Moses [04872] the man [0376] of God [0430] concerning me [0182] and thee [0182] in Kadeshbarnea [06947].
12 Save Caleb [03612] the son [01121] of Jephunneh [03312] the Kenezite [07074], and Joshua [03091] the son [01121] of Nun [05126]: for they have wholly [04390] followed [0310] the LORD [03068].
