first day--a natural day, as the mention of its two parts clearly determines; and Moses reckons, according to Oriental usage, from sunset to sunset, saying not day and night as we do, but evening and morning. |

day
The word "day" is used in Scripture in three ways:
(1) that part of the solar day of twenty-four hours which is light (Gen 1:5); (Gen 1:14); (Joh 9:4); (Joh 11:9).
(2) such a day, set apart for some distinctive purpose, as, "day of atonement" (Lev 23:27); "day of judgment" (Mat 10:15).
(3) a period of time, long or short, during which certain revealed purposes of God are to be accomplished, as "day of the Lord."
evening
The use of "evening" and "morning" may be held to limit "day" to the solar day; but the frequent parabolic use of natural phenomena may warrant the conclusion that each creative "day" was a period of time marked off by a beginning and ending. |
15 Verily [281] I say [3004] unto you [5213], It shall be [2071] more tolerable [414] for the land [1093] of Sodom [4670] and [2532] Gomorrha [1116] in [1722] the day [2250] of judgment [2920], than [2228] for that [1565] city [4172].
27 Also [0389] on the tenth [06218] day of this seventh [07637] month [02320] there shall be a day [03117] of atonement [03725]: it shall be an holy [06944] convocation [04744] unto you; and ye shall afflict [06031] your souls [05315], and offer [07126] an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068].
9 Jesus [2424] answered [611], Are there [1526] not [3780] twelve [1427] hours [5610] in the day [2250]? If [1437] any man [5100] walk [4043] in [1722] the day [2250], he stumbleth [4350] not [3756], because [3754] he seeth [991] the light [5457] of this [5127] world [2889].
4 I [1691] must [1163] work [2038] the works [2041] of him that sent [3992] me [3165], while [2193] it is [2076] day [2250]: the night [3571] cometh [2064], when [3753] no man [3762] can [1410] work [2038].
14 And God [0430] said [0559], Let there be lights [03974] in the firmament [07549] of the heaven [08064] to divide [0914] the day [03117] from the night [03915]; and let them be for signs [0226], and for seasons [04150], and for days [03117], and years [08141]:
5 And God [0430] called [07121] the light [0216] Day [03117], and the darkness [02822] he called [07121] Night [03915]. And the evening [06153] and the morning [01242] were the first [0259] day [03117].
