hath given--Greek, aorist: "gave" once for all. Not only "promised" it.
life is in his Son--essentially (Joh 1:4; Joh 11:25; Joh 14:6); bodily (Col 2:9); operatively (Ti2 1:10) [LANGE in ALFORD]. It is in the second Adam, the Son of God, that this life is secured to us, which, if left to depend on us, we should lose, like the first Adam. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
And this is the record - This is the sum, or the amount, of the testimony (μαρτυρία marturia) which God has given respecting him.
That God hath given to us eternal life - Has provided, through the Saviour, the means of obtaining eternal life. See the notes at Joh 5:24; Joh 17:2-3.
And this life is in his Son - Is treasured up in him, or is to be obtained through him. See the Joh 1:4; Joh 11:25; Joh 14:6 notes; Col 3:3 note. |

Hath given (ἔδωκεν)
The aorist tense, gave. So Rev. The reference is to the historic fact of the gift. So Jo1 3:23 : "We should love one another as He gave (ἔδωκεν) us commandment." Jo1 3:24 : "We know that He abideth in us by the Spirit which He gave (ἔδωκεν) us." On the other hand, Jo1 3:1 : "Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed (δέδωκεν) upon us." The gift of love abides in the fact that we are now children of God (Jo1 3:2).
Eternal life (ζωὴν αἰώνιον)
Compare the phrase τὴν ζωὴν τὴν αἰώνιον the life, the eternal life (Jo1 1:2), and ἡ αἰώνιος ζωὴ the eternal life (Joh 17:3). For the distinction between the phrases see on Jo1 1:2. The phrase here, without either article, merely defines the character of the life. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
And this is the sum of that testimony, that God hath given us a title to, and the real beginning of, eternal life; and that this is purchased by, and treasured up in, his Son, who has all the springs and the fulness of it in himself, to communicate to his body, the church, first in grace and then in glory. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
This is the record - The great truth to which the Spirit, the water, and the blood bear testimony. God hath given us eternal life - a right to endless glory, and a meetness for it. And this life is in his Son; it comes by and through him; he is its author and its purchaser; it is only in and through Him. No other scheme of salvation can be effectual; God has provided none other, and in such a case a man's invention must be vain. |
10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
