suffer--rather, as the Greek is the same as in Ti2 2:10, "If we endure (with Him)" (Rom 8:17).
reign with him--The peculiar privilege of the elect Church now suffering with Christ, then to reign with Him (see on Co1 6:2). Reigning is something more than mere salvation (Rom 5:17; Rev 3:21; Rev 5:10; Rev 20:4-5).
deny--with the mouth. As "believe" with the heart follows, Ti2 2:12. Compare the opposite, "confess with thy mouth" and "believe in thine heart" (Rom 10:9-10).
he also will deny us-- (Mat 10:33). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
If we suffer, we shall also reign with him - The meaning is, that the members will be treated as the Head is. We become united with him by faith, and, if we share his treatment on earth, we shall share his triumphs in heaven; see the notes at Rom 8:17.
If we deny him, he also will deny us; - see the notes at Mat 10:32-33. |
Vincent's Word Studies, by Marvin R. Vincent [1886] |

If we deny him - To escape suffering for him. |

If we suffer - with him - These are other parts of the true doctrine, which the apostle mentions above. |
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.
5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.
17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
19 And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
17 And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
8 Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.
